Military V-22 Osprey chopper crashes off the coast of Darwin with about 20 US Marines onboard, as rescue operation continues

Sky News Australia has learned of a military helicopter crash off the coast of Darwin, as an emergency search for unaccounted personnel begins.

A military helicopter carrying around 20 US Marines has crashed during an exercise off the coast of Darwin.

Sky News has confirmed that around 11:00am local time, the Osprey Helicopter crashed near Melville Island during ‘Predators Run’ drills, which involve personnel from Australia, the United States, Indonesia, the Philippines and Timor-Leste.

Sources have told Sky News it is “possible” casualties may result from the crash, as some personnel remain unaccounted for.

The Australian Defence Force has confirmed that there were no Australians on board the helicopter when it went down.

"Initial reports suggest the incident involves United States defence personnel and that the Australian Defence Force members were not involved," the ADF said in a statement.

"At this critical early stage, our focus is on the incident response and ensuring the safety of those involved. More information will be provided when appropriate."

CareFlight jets have been spotted leaving Darwin airport for the major rescue operation and Royal Darwin Hospital is gearing up to treat any people involved in the crash.

Northern Territory Police have issued a brief statement confirming that they are "currently responding to reports of an aircraft crash on Melville Island".

Sky News understands Predators run exercises will be paused following the crash.

Angry farmers are fighting against a green energy policy they argue will destabilise the energy grid and threaten Victoria’s food security.

Victorian farmers are outraged by the Albanese’s government plan to install transmission lines which they argue will drastically impact their work while destabilising the energy grid.

The Western Renewables Link which will run high voltage power lines over agricultural land from Bulgana in Victoria’s west to north of Jerilderie in southern NSW.

Earlier this month farmers descended onto Victorian Parliament to protest the lines, stating that the human toll of the lines far outweighs any renewable energy transmission.

Ballarat potato farmer Katherine Myers said the 80m towers are not conducive with most farming practices, listing the limitations it poses to her farm on Sunday’s Outsiders program.

“There’s really limited options for us,” Ms Myers told Sky News hosts Rowan Dean, Rita Panahi and James Morrow.

“We are not allowed to irrigate, use any of the aerial machinery that we normally use and not allowed to use emerging technology like drones.”

She added that the serious size limitations for machinery will not only impact the ability to produce food for many farmers but also disrupt energy output in the area.

“We’ve seen the energy policy centre come out and say it's going to destabilise the grid and it's not going to let in as much renewable energy that aemo said into the grid,” she said.

“So it's actually a great white elephant that's going to compromise our food security for very little energy stability.”The Albanese government is investing $16.6 billion over a decade to transition from ageing coal fired plants to solar and wind farm energy.

The east coast grid transformation will help the federal government meet its ambitious 82 per cent renewable energy target by 2030.

Meanwhile the Victorian Andrews government is promising to be 65 per cent reliant on renewable energy by 2030 and 95 per cent reliant by 2035.

Ms Myers said farmers and conservationists alike were “united” against the transmission lines, adding that the plan was at odds with the Alabense government’s desire to protect the environment.

“It’s been incredibly uniting. One of the interesting projects where we’ve got farmers, conservationists, landcare groups… all standing shoulder to shoulder,” she said.

“Because they know these transmission lines aren’t good for biodiversity, they're going to cut down thousands of trees.”

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is deliberately not releasing the monthly totals of all illegal migrants who wind up getting released into the U.S. after they are encountered by U.S. authorities at the border, a former U.S. immigration judge says.

Andrew Arthur, who served for eight years as an immigration judge at the now-closed immigration court in York, Pennsylvania, told Just the News that DHS does track the total number of migrants released after an encounter with border agents, but making that data available to the public would paint the Biden Administration in a negative light.

"The only reason why ICE and OFO [Office of Field Operations] would refuse to disclose that information is to hide the fact that it is releasing more than 100,000 aliens per month into the United States, and to conceal the effects of those migrant releases on communities across the United States," he said.

Arthur also said that DHS should be required to release the information the same way that the monthly data on encounters of illegal immigrants is posted online.

Arthur also said the "monthly court-ordered disclosures in Texas v. Biden," the lawsuit over the Remain in Mexico policy, demonstrated DHS "can provide the American people with statistics on the tens of thousands of illegal entrants that CBP encounters at the southwest border whom DHS releases" into the U.S. The agency has "refused to do so since those orders were vacated in August 2022," Arthur explained.

U.S. immigration judges, formerly called "special inquiry officers'" are not part of the federal judiciary, but rather are employees of the United States Department of Justice and report to the Attorney General.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), which describes itself as "a non-partisan, public interest organization" with more than three million diverse members and supporters, said that the Biden administration is not being transparent with the public about how many migrants without U.S. legal status are being released into the U.S.

DHS should be "required to release all pertinent information to the public," a spokesperson for FAIR told Just the News. "It should be done as a matter of course because the public has a right to know. But if it requires an act of Congress, then so be it."

The office of Rep. Darrell Issa, (R-Cal.), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, said the total number of migrants DHS is releasing should be reported to Congress on a daily basis. A spokesperson for Issa told Just the News that it's "obvious why the Biden Admin does everything it can to minimize transparency."

The shooter is believed to have lived in Clay County, Florida, with his parents.

Jacksonville shooting: Racist gunman kills three black people in Florida store

A gunman killed three black people in a racially motivated attack then killed himself in Jacksonville, Florida, the city's sheriff said.

The man, described as white and in his early 20s, entered a Dollar General store and opened fire, triggering a standoff with police.

Sheriff T K Waters said two men and a woman were killed by the gunman, who wore body armour and left manifestos.

Mayor Donna Deegan said it was a "hate-filled crime" driven by racist hatred.

The sheriff said the shooter - who has not yet been officially named - carried a lightweight semi-automatic rifle and a handgun.

He is believed to have acted alone and allegedly wanted to kill himself. He lived in Jacksonville's Clay County with his parents and left several messages about his intentions, Sheriff Waters said, including one to his parents and another to the media. The sheriff added that at least one of the guns had a swastika drawn on it.

The FBI has opened a civil rights investigation into the shooting, which it is treating as a hate crime.

The attack happened less than a mile from the historically black Edwards Waters University.

Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan told local TV channel WJXT: "One shooting is too much but these mass shootings are really hard to take."

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the gunman a "scumbag" and described the shooting as "horrific".

"He [the gunman] was targeting people based on their race, that is totally unacceptable," said Mr DeSantis, who is competing to be the Republican party's presidential candidate.

"This guy killed himself rather than face the music and accept responsibility for his actions and so he took the coward's way out."

The White House said President Joe Biden had been briefed on the shooting.

In a statement provided to the BBC's US partner, CBS News, Dollar General said it was "heartbroken by the senseless act of violence that occurred at our Kings Road store", adding that "supporting our Jacksonville employees and the DG family impacted by this tragedy is a top priority as we work closely with law enforcement".

There have been over 28,000 gun deaths in the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive website.

The Jacksonville attack comes on the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr's famous "I have a dream" speech. Tens of thousands of people gathered in the capital on Saturday to mark the historic milestone in the civil rights movement.

The Hawaii deadline for victims of child sex abuse to sue was Sunday. In the four years leading up to the deadline, about 150 people filed legal complaints saying they were sexually molested as children. Most victims accused Catholic priests of being their abusers.

But not all were priests. Teachers and other professionals also have been named in the lawsuits. Twenty-six plaintiffs say the now-deceased Kamehameha Schools psychiatrist Robert McCormick Browne drugged and sexually molested them as children when the school sent them to Browne for therapy.

Hawaii lawmakers made it possible for sexual abuse victims to seek justice by extending the deadline for civil suits in 2012 and again in 2014 until the April 24 cutoff.

Most of the alleged incidents happened between the early 1950s and late 1980s.

Attorney Randall Rosenberg, who has filed suits for 56 claimants, says: “This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are hundreds of others out there in Hawaii who have been abused. And now with the deadline passed we are unable to help them.”

Rosenberg and other attorneys say they have learned a lot since they began listening to clients recount their betrayal by adults they trusted.

Rosenberg says what surprised him is how widespread child sex abuse is — not just in the Catholic Church but also at other places charged with protecting children in their care.

“It happens at schools, doctors’ offices, in Boy Scout troops, family homes, karate dojos, in churches, with foster parents — anywhere an adult is left alone with a child. We have to do more to stop it,” he says.

Rosenberg has reached mediated settlements in 39 of the legal complaints he has filed — 23 with the Honolulu Diocese and 16 with other institutions, including the Mormon Church and the Salvation Army.

But for many of the victims, even those who have received large financial settlements, the pain lingers.

A Victim’s Story

One of them says he still feels remorse and guilt about not rescuing a former classmate at St. Stephen Diocesan Seminary in Kaneohe, who he says was ushered into the bedroom of now-deceased priest William Queenan each night to be sodomized. In a phone conversation for this column, he started crying when he talked about it.

“It was so sad watching him come out of the room in the morning. I wish I had stuck up for him and I still wonder what became of him. As runty, bullied and timid as I was then, he was even more so. He was gentle and creative and had great skills as a sketch artist,” says MG, as he is identified in his lawsuit.

MG says he, too, was molested by Father Queenan. Another former seminary student has also sued, saying Queenan molested him when he was 14.

Most of the plaintiffs have sued anonymously as John or Jane Doe or using their initials to maintain their privacy.

MG was sexually abused before he enrolled at St. Stephen. When he was a 12-year-old altar boy at Good Shepherd Church in Honomu on Hawaii Island he says a drunken Maryknoll priest named Francis Daubert got him alone in a back room of the church where he tied him up, tortured and sodomized him for five hours before he could escape.

In the last two weeks before the deadline to sue, attorney Rosenberg says he took on 15 new cases and Kailua attorney Mark Gallagher accepted 12 new clients.

Rosenberg and Gallagher have filed the most child sex abuse complaints in the past four years, since the time frame to file suit was expanded.

USMC Bell Boeing MV-22B Osprey crashed during the Exercise Predator's Run 2023 at Melville Island, Tiwi Islands, about 60km north of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.

A majority of Democrat voters who backed President Joe Biden in 2020 think the investigations and criminal indictments against Donald Trump constitute "an interference in the 2024 presidential election," according to a new poll conducted exclusively for Newsweek.

The Redfield & Wilton Strategies survey reveals a majority in every age group, gender and geographic location, except for the Northeast, think Trump's ongoing legal difficulties constitute election interference in a major boost to the Republican frontrunner.

On Thursday, Trump was arrested and then released on a $200,000 bond over claims he broke the law attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election result in Georgia. The former president has strongly denied any wrongdoing, claiming the allegations against him are a "witch hunt" and "election interference."

Trump has also pleaded not guilty to a series of charges related to claims he orchestrated the payment of hush money to an adult movie star ahead of the 2016 election, mishandled classified documents after leaving the White House and illegally tried to block Joe Biden's 2020 election victory on a nationwide basis. No previous U.S. president has ever been charged with a criminal offense.

The Redfield & Wilton Strategies poll found an average of 59 percent of Americans believed the four cases are an interference, versus 19 percent who disagreed, while another 22 percent said they didn't know.

Among respondents who voted for Trump, 65 percent said the charges were interference, with just 10 percent saying they were not and 25 percent unsure. Notably, 58 percent of 2020 Biden voters also thought them an interference, compared to 27 percent who said they disagreed with the statement and 15 percent who didn't know.

The view that Trump's legal difficulties amounted to interference was held by some respondents among all the age groups surveyed, though younger voters were the least sympathetic to the former president.

Among Generation Z, aged 18-26, 55 percent thought them interference, versus 30 percent who disagreed—for Millennials, aged 27 to 42, the figure was 58 percent versus 15 percent. Generation X, between 43 and 58 in age, the belief was that the cases were election interference by 61 percent compared to 16 percent, while those aged 59 and over held the same view by 59 percent to 20 percent.

Both men and woman considered the investigations to be interference, with 55 percent of males and 62 percent of females holding this view. Correspondingly, just 22 percent of men said they were not, along with 16 percent of women. In the South, West and Midwest, 64 percent, 56 percent and 61 percent of respondents dubbed Trump's legal battles election interference respectively, versus 18 percent, 15 percent and 19 percent who disagreed.

Only in the Northeast did fewer than half consider them interference, though at 46 percent it was still larger than the 27 percent who disagreed and the remaining 27 percent who said they did not know.

A majority of Americans also thought Trump is likely to be "convicted and imprisoned" on at least one of the four indictments he faces. In total 57 percent of respondents think this was either very likely, likely or somewhat likely, versus 33 percent for somewhat unlikely, unlikely or very unlikely, with the remainder unsure.

The judge assigned to former President Trump’s multiple indictments stemming from his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election is the scion of a family of revolutionary Marxists in her native Jamaica.

Judge Tanya S. Chutkan, an Obama appointee, is the granddaughter of Frank Hill, a Jamaican communist revolutionary, who along with his brother Ken were briefly jailed by the island’s British governor during World War II over suspicions of “subversive activities.”

Hill is the father of Noelle Hill, Judge Chutkan’s mother, public records show.

Frank, along with his brother Ken Hill, and fellow comrades Richard Hart and Arthur Henry, were expelled from the People’s National Party of Jamaica for espousing communist views, according to local Jamaican media.
