Biden cancels Quad visit to Australia to focus on debt limit talks

Joe Biden is curtailing his upcoming trip to the Indo-Pacific, scrapping what was to be a historic stop in Papua New Guinea as well as a visit to Australia for a gathering with fellow leaders of the so-called Quad partnership so he can focus on debt limit talks in Washington, according to three people familiar with the matter. The cancellation is a foreign policy setback for an administration that has made putting a greater focus on the Pacific region central to its global outreach.

Biden still plans to depart on Wednesday for Hiroshima, Japan, for a Group of Seven summit with leaders from some of the world's major economies. He will return to the U.S. on Sunday, according to the people familiar the matter who requested anonymity to discuss the yet-to-be-formally-announced decision. Biden had been scheduled to travel on to Papua New Guinea to meet with Pacific Island leaders and then to Australia for a meeting of the leaders of the Quad partnership, made up of the U.S., Australia, India and Japan. The Papua New Guinea stop would have been the first visit by a sitting U.S. president to the island country of more than 9 million people.

The Quad partnership first formed during the response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed some 230,000 people. Since coming into office, Biden has tried to reinvigorate the Quad as part of his broader effort to put greater U.S. focus on the Pacific and counter increasing economic and military assertiveness by China in the region.

Ukraine claims to intercept three times as many projectiles as Russia actually launches, the Russian defense minister has said

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has refuted claims made by Ukrainian military officials about shooting down six Russian hypersonic Kinzhal missiles during overnight strikes on targets near the country’s capital city of Kiev.

Ukraine routinely exaggerates the effectiveness of its anti-aircraft defenses, primarily ‘intercepting’ incoming Russian munitions only with public statements, Shoigu told RIA Novosti.

“I have already said that, and I will repeat it again. We have not launched as many ‘Kinzhals’ as they allegedly shoot down every time with their statements. Moreover, the number of these ‘Ukrainian interceptions’ – and who really mans the American [anti-aircraft] complexes there, is still a big question –is three times as high as what we actually launch,” Shoigu stated.

The minister also said thatUkraine “always”misidentifies munitionsused by Russia in its media statements. “That’s why they miss them,” he added, without providing any further information on the number of missiles used in the latest barrage.

Ukraine was subjected to a new massive missile and suicide drone barrage overnight, with the country’s capital city of Kiev seeing particularly intense activity by Ukrainian anti-aircraft defenses, footage circulating online suggests.

Moscow and Kiev haveprovided drastically different accountsof what happened overnight. Kiev claimed that it had shot down six state-of-the-art hypersonic missiles over the capital, as well as other incoming projectiles, using a battery of the US-made Patriot air defense system. The Russian military, however, said the batterywas successfully hit by a Kinzhal missile. Footage available online shows multiple anti-aircraft missiles going towards an unseen target, with at least two explosions seen at the site from which they appeared to be launched.

Western media reports suggested the Patriot battery in question was likely damaged in the strike. According to CNN, citing an unidentified US official, Washington is currently assessing the extent of the damage in order to determine whether the Patriots need to be pulled back or whether on-site repairs by Ukrainian forces would be enough.

The president has reportedly booted New York’s Eric Adams from his re-election campaign team amid criticism over migrant surge

President Joe Biden has apparently had a falling out with the mayor of America’s largest city, New York City’s Eric Adams, because the fellow Democrat has been criticizing his administration’s handling of an illegal immigration crisis.

The conflict bubbled up on Tuesday, when Adams was asked in a ‘Good Day NY’ television interview about the city’s struggles to cope with a massive migrant influx, “Where the heck is the president of the United States?” The mayor replied, “That is a good question, and I think we all should be asking why this is happening to a city that was turning itself around and will continue to do so.”

A surge in illegal crossings of the US-Mexico border to all-time highs began to hit home for New York last year, when the governors of Texas and Florida began bussing migrants to Democrat-controlled cities. “This should not be happening to New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles and the other big northern cities,”Adams said. “And really, it should not be happening to El Paso or Brownsville, Texas. No city should be carrying this burden. This is a national problem, and it needs a national solution.”

Feeling pressure from his own constituents, Adams has escalated his criticism of the Biden administration in recent weeks amid increasing struggles to accommodate the illegal aliens streaming into his city. Parents were up in arms on Tuesday over the city’s plan to house hundreds of migrants in school gymnasiums after running out of space elsewhere. Homeless veterans were reportedly kicked out of hotels in upstate New York, where they had been given temporary shelter, to make room for illegal immigrants being bused from New York City.

Adams was reportedly excluded from Biden’s re-election campaign team topunish him for alleged disloyalty. The mayor had announced earlier this year that he would be serving on the campaign’s national leadership advisory team, but when the group’s official membership list was released last week, Adams was left off.

“This is a shot to the chops from the Biden team,” political consultant Hank Sheinkopf told the New York Post. “The message is: Don’t criticize an incumbent Democratic president and don’t criticize the first black female vice president. Any criticism from a Democrat heading into re-election is seen as a betrayal.”

Adams hasn’t been alone in sounding the alarm over the immigration crisis. New York’s governor, Kathy Hochul, has asked Biden’s administration for funding help and access to federal installations, such as military bases, to house illegal aliens. “You’re going to start seeing people living in tents not just on the border, but in the streets of New York and across New York state because we’ve reached a breaking point,” she said on Monday in an MSNBC interview.

Chair of Ukrainian Supreme Court arrested over $3 million bribe

Anti-corruption authorities have suggested that other judges may be implicated in the scheme

Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) has detained the chair of the country’s Supreme Court, Vsevolod Knyazev, local media have reported. He is allegedly suspected of receiving a $2.7 million bribe as part of a scheme that may involve other officials.

In a Facebook post late on Monday, NABU said it had “uncovered large-scale corruption in the Supreme Court, namely ascheme that allowed the leadership and judges to receive illicit profit.” The bureau added that an “urgent” investigation was under way, and that details would be provided in due course.

In a separate message on Tuesday, NABU announced a press conference on the case at midday local time in Kiev.

While officials have stopped short of revealing any names, several Ukrainian media outlets have cited anonymous sources as claiming that Knyazev was taken into custody.

Ukraine’s highest judicial body indirectly confirmed the news by posting a message on Facebook, stating that “in light of what is happening around Supreme Court chair Knyazev, an extraordinary meeting of the Supreme Court’s plenum will take place on May 16, 2023.”

According to ZN.UA, citing unnamed sources in NABU, authorities have conducted searches atproperties belonging to 18 other Supreme Court judges.

Sergey Leshenko, an adviser to the head of Ukraine’s presidential office, cited a bribe totaling $3 million when discussing Knyazev with the media. Vitaly Kim, governor of Nikolaev Oblast, gave a figure of $2.7 million.

The Strana media outlet claimed that Knyazev had received the money from Ukrainianoligarch Konstantin Zhevago, who is currently in France but is wanted in his homeland for his role in thecollapse of a bank.

Earlier this month, Ukraine’s High Anti-Corruption Court ordered the arrest of Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov over allegations of misusing city funds dating back to 2017.

NABU conducted raids in the Zhitomirsky and Kharkov regional military administrations in April.

Covenant Church Files Motion To Halt Release Of Trans Shooter’s Manifesto

Covenant Presbyterian Church filed a motion over the weekend to prevent the release of transgender shooter Audrey Hale’s journals and writings, according to court documents.

The release of Hale’s manifesto has been halted by several lawsuits that were filed earlier this month after the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) indicated that the documents may be made public. The church filed a motion Friday, requesting that the documents be withheld from the public due to privacy concerns, according to court documents.

A motion was filed against the Tennessee Firearms Association (TFA) and a second with the Nashville Police Association (NPA) by the church to “protect its interests.”

“The records sought in Petitioners’ Complaint and Petition may include and/or relate to information owned by Covenant Church, including, but not limited to, schematics of church facilities and confidential information pertaining to Covenant Church employees,” the motion read. “Covenant Church is so situated that the disposition of this action may impair or impede its ability to protect its interests and the privacy of its employees. Therefore, intervention by Covenant Church in this action is warranted.”

The motion is set to be heard in front of a judge on May 18, according to the documents. TFA and NPA filed lawsuits several weeks earlier demanding that the entire manifesto be released after officials hesitated to say whether or not the documents would be given to the public, according to local news outlets.

The documents were found during a search of Hale’s home on March 27, after Hale killed three children and three staff members during a shooting earlier that morning. Police have declined on several occasions to announce a motive for the shooting and would only say that Hale’s writings and journals contained maps and plans for how the attack was supposed to take place.

Covenant, TFA and MNPD did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert files for divorce from husband of nearly 2 decades

Rep. Lauren Boebert, a two-term Colorado Republican, who has garnered a national reputation as a far-right representative, has filed for divorce from her husband of two decades.

The Colorado Sun first reported that Boebert filed for the separation from her husband, Jayson, late last month. In a written statement to the publication, the congresswoman confirmed the news and cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the dissolution of her marriage.

"It is with a heavy weight on my heart that I have filed for divorce from my husband. I am grateful for our years of marriage together and for our beautiful children, all of whom deserve privacy and love as we work through this process," Boebert said in a statement first obtained by the Sun. "I've always been faithful in my marriage, and I believe strongly in marriage, which makes this announcement that much more difficult."

According to an affidavit, when Jayson Boebert was served with the petition he became "extremely angry." The process server said Boebert identified himself before his demeanor noticeably changed when informed of the news.

"He started yelling and using profanities," the server wrote of what transpired.

The congresswoman is suing for parental-decision making power and child support for the couple's four sons, according to the filing. In her statement, Boebert said that she will not "discuss this matter any further in public" in deference to their kids.

The Republican previously announced that her oldest son, Tyler, is about to have a son, making her a 36-year-old grandmother.

"Now my son, when I approached him and told him, 'Tyler, I'm going to be a 36-year-old grandmother,' he said, 'Well, didn't you make Granny a 36-year-old granny?'" Boebert said, alluding to the fact that she and Jayson had Tyler when she was a teenager.

Boebert wrote extensively about her relationship with her husband in her book, "My American Life." The congresswoman claimed that her husband never exposed his penis in a bowling alley bar in 2004, despite serving jail time for public indecency and lewd exposure.

Once closely aligned with fellow Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Boebert has repeatedly been in the news during her short time in Congress. Boebert heckled President Joe Biden during a State of the Union address, joined with other conservatives in forcing a dayslong standoff in House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's election to the top role, and narrowly survived an unexpectedly close re-election fight last November.

"About the destruction of the Patriot air defense system in Kyiv

Last night, the Russian Armed Forces destroyed at least one launcher of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system in Kyiv. Rybar's team managed to establish the exact location of the anti-aircraft battery. At least two launchers were located at the Zhuliany airport, where the Dagger hit.

Another place where the work of the Ukrainian air defense was noticed was the vicinity of the Kyiv zoo, where the wreckage of the released missiles fell. The system itself worked in close proximity to the Kyiv Polytechnic University named after Sikorsky.

As for the airfield "Zhulyany", footage from the surveillance camera got into the Network. In the video, you can clearly see the launches of 32 missiles (a total of 16 for each launcher), as well as the work of barreled anti-aircraft artillery - apparently, the Patriots covered the Gepard ZSU.

After the ammunition load was used up, an explosion was heard: the Russian "Dagger" managed to hit the positional area, despite two "Patriots" and one "Gepard".

Given the appearance on CNN of information about the damage to the complex - if not destruction, then at least a partial decommissioning of American air defense systems can be considered a fait accompli. There is another interesting detail: the appearance of a persistent rumor that the SAM operators could have deliberately released the entire ammunition load in order to reduce the radius of the explosion. That is, according to this version, they knew about the flying "Dagger" and deliberately used up ammunition in order to reduce the force of the subsequent detonation. Alas, we do not know how it really happened.

But we clearly see that the "Patriot" is not a superweapon, and it can and should be beaten. As well as the Gepard ZSU, which for the second time failed to cope with the task of covering the air defense position area from Russian weapons of destruction.

The son of the 45th president of the United States, who has been described as “the voice of undiluted Trumpism”, said he will be making a three city speaking tour of Australia this July to talk about the “disease of woke identity politics and cancel culture … that has clearly taken hold (in Australia).”

Organisers said they expected that the tour, which will run from July 9-11 and hit Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, would draw “significant” attention due to Mr Trump’s “polarising” reputation and “divisive, anti-politically correct stances”.

Mr Trump said that he looked forward to returning to Australia, which he visited in his youth.

“I actually spent a month backpacking around Australia in my (third) year of university and absolutely loved it,” Mr Trump said.

“It’s a great country full of great people which is why it is so sad to see what is happening there.”

“I have a huge fanbase in Australia and after speaking with some of them it’s clear the same disease of wok identity politics and cancel culture that’s crippled the US has clearly taken hold there.”

“It’s not good. It is the biggest existential threat we face in the West and is literally the decay of Western society,” he said.

Along with being an author, businessman, and TV personality, Mr Trump also has a strong social media presence with 6.4 million followers on Instagram where he is known as the “Meme Wars General”.

He has been one of his father’s staunchest defenders on social media, amplifying official Trump campaign messaging and condemning the recent indictment of the former president by New York prosecutor Alvin Bragg.

“This is political weaponisation of our government against its citizens and against political opposition and resistance like we’ve never seen before,” he said on Instagram around the time of the indictment.

“This is the kind of stuff that would make Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, and other sociopaths blush.”

Mr Trump’s tour is sponsored by Turning Point, the same company that brought out UK Brexit leader Nigel Farage last year.

A spokesman for the organiser said, “We are thrilled to welcome Donald Trump Jr to Australia for his first speaking tour.”

Mortgage applications decreased 5.7 percent from one week earlier, according to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association’s (MBA) Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey for the week ending May 12, 2023. The Market Composite Index, a measure of mortgage loan application volume, decreased 5.7 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis from one week earlier. On an unadjusted basis, the Index decreased 6 percent compared with the previous week. The Refinance Index decreased 8 percent from the previous week and was 43 percent lower than the same week one year ago. The seasonally adjusted Purchase Index decreased 4.8 percent from one week earlier. The unadjusted Purchase Index decreased 5 percent compared with the previous week and was 26 percent lower than the same week one year ago. “Mortgage rates increased last week even as Treasury yields were essentially flat, with the spread between the two rates widening to 310 basis points. Mortgage application activity slowed, as most mortgage rates in the survey increased, with the 30-year fixed rate jumping nine basis points to its highest level in two months at 6.57 percent,” said Joel Kan, MBA’s Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist. “Purchase applications decreased 5 percent to its slowest pace in a month, as buyers remain wary of this rate volatility, but also as for-sale inventory in many parts of the country remains scarce.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Legislation banning most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy will become law in North Carolina after the state’s Republican-controlled General Assembly successfully overrode the Democratic governor’s veto late Tuesday.

The House completed the second and final part of the override vote after a similar three-fifths majority — the fraction necessary — voted for the override earlier Tuesday in the Senate. The party-line outcomes represent a major victory for Republican legislative leaders who needed every GOP member on board to enact the law over Gov. Roy Cooper’s opposition.

Cooper vetoed the measure over the weekend after spending last week traveling around the state to persuade at least one Republican to side with him on the override, which would be enough to uphold his veto. But in the end, the four Republicans targeted by Cooper — including one who recently switched from the Democratic Party — voted to override.

Republicans pitched the measure as a middle-ground change to state law, which currently bans nearly all abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, without exceptions for rape or incest.

The recently developed S-8OFP unguided air-launched projectile is touted as offering a greater payload.

A new Russian air-launched rocket with increased range and firepower has gone into serial production and could be deployed in action against Ukraine this year, its manufacturer has reported.

The deputy director of defense producer Tekhmash, Aleksandr Kochkin, shared the news about the S-8OFP with RIA Novosti on the sidelines of a military exhibition in Belarus on Wednesday.

The rocket, which is nicknamed ‘Broneboyshchik’ (armor piercer), is the latest addition to the S-8 family of unguided projectiles meant for aerial platforms, including close air support planes and helicopters. According to Tekhmash, the weapon’s main feature is a new engine that uses a more powerful propellant.

Attached is original AG Barr’s appt of John Durham as Special Counsel on October 19, 2020. This was released less than 14 days before Nov, 3, 2020 Presidential election. He wasted Durham’s time for 1 year and 5 months when Barr had hDurham do a preliminary review and then as Special Attorney, both appointments were powerless. Why would Barr waste all that time?

And BTW AG Barr never gave Special Counsel Durham, access to classified information until December 21, 2020 the day Barr resigned. (Two months after Durham was officially appointed SC).

If its not obvious, there was no way for Durham to submit a report either from October 19, 2020 SC appt and certainly he would never be able to submit a SC report if he never had access to underlying classified information Barr finally gave SC on Dec. 21, 2020. Some questions on the SC appt language especially section E:

1. Why did Barr write on 10/19/20 that he would delay any reports from Durham until after the 2020 election? Durham would have officially be SC for only 13-14 days?

2. It was not even conceivable that Durham could submit a report to the AG and then to Congress shortly after Nov. 3, 2020 especially he had no access to classified as SC info until 12/21/20. ( It’s obvious Barr hamstrung and limited Durham’s authorities as SC from the beginning). So why would Barr make note of this in his appt?

3. Why did Barr want to delay informing congress of the SC’s report, when he knew he wasted 1 year and 5 months of Durhams time without the authorities of SC? Was he just trying to delay this in case Durham was a lot further on then Barr thought?

4. Why did Barr only give access to classified documentation to the SC Dec. 21, 2020, two months after appointing him as SC?

UBS Group AG (UBSG.S) was rushed into buying cross-town rival Credit Suisse Group AG (CSGN.S) in a deal it did not want, as a global bank crisis worsened the latter's finances and prompted authorities to take swift action, a regulatory filing showed. UBS, in a Tuesday filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, told investors it had less than four days to conduct due diligence given the "emergency circumstances". It estimated a hit of about $17 billion from the takeover.

Switzerland's biggest bank agreed to buy its smaller rival after the latter had endured a difficult year.

Credit Suisse's involvement in a series of corporate collapses spooked clients who began withdrawing their money, a trend that accelerated when U.S. bank failures sparked fear of a broader banking crisis.

The wave of deposit outflows and a major share-price drop prompted Switzerland's central bank on March 15 to offer Credit Suisse liquidity assistance.The next day, UBS and Credit Suisse signed a confidentiality agreement upon which the former began due diligence, the UBS filing showed.

On March 19, the Swiss National Bank announced UBS would buy Credit Suisse for 3 billion Swiss francs ($3.4 billion) in stock and assume a loss of as much as 5 billion francs stemming from winding down part of the business.

The final price was raised from an initial 1 billion francs, the filing showed.

Interest from UBS in buying Credit Suisse began in October (conveniently just after the NYFRB started doing billions in Franc/Dollar swaps with the Swiss National Bank a total of $20.738B from Sept '22 to April 2023) when the ad hoc Strategy Committee of its board of directors reviewed its rival's distressed situation, according to the filing. By then, Credit Suisse was experiencing deposit and net asset outflows at levels substantially exceeding rates of the July-September quarter, UBS said.

Part of active region AR 3297 crossing the Sun in early May, the large lower sunspot is spanned by an impressive light bridge of hot and suspended solar gas. This high-resolution picture also shows clearly that the Sun's surface is a bubbling carpet of separate cells of hot gas. These cells are known as granules. A solar granule is about 1000 kilometers across and lasts for only about 15 minutes.

Money keeps pouring into the U.S. Marshals Service from federal political campaigns and committees who received funds from FTX, the now-defunct cryptocurrency company, according to a Raw Story analysis of federal campaign records.

Another five political campaigns sent $15,500 in campaign cash to the government agency best known for hunting down suspected criminals, adding to at least $160,000 collected from 30 federal political candidates and party committees, as Raw Story first reported.

The five new campaigns that gave up the money are fundraising entities for Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-NY), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR), Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA).

Stefanik is chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, the GOP’s fourth most powerful position in the U.S. House of Representatives.

These mass “disgorgements” to the U.S. Marshals — an extraordinary development with almost no precedent in politics — stem from the Department of Justice urging politicians to return contributions made by FTX executives, including Sam Bankman-Fried, the company’s former CEO. Bankman-Fried faces 13 charges in federal court, including fraud, breaking campaign finance laws and violating the Foreign Corrupt Business Practices Act with an alleged $40 million bribe to Chinese authorities.

“Based on our office's investigation, we have cause to believe these donations represent the proceeds of Bankman-Fried's crimes and accordingly are forfeitable under applicable provisions of the federal asset forfeiture statutes,” said a letter sent by the Department of Justice to a member of Congress’ campaign committee, which in turn shared its contents with Raw Story.

The letter continued, “It is the intent of this office to request any funds forfeited be made available to compensate the victims of Bankman-Fried's crimes pursuant to the Department of Justice's restoration and/or remission regulations."

These letters seem to indicate the DOJ taking a harder stance on campaigns taking money from suspected criminals — and could be considered an “aggressive practice,” said Kevin O’Brien, a partner at Ford O’Brien Landy LLP and former assistant U.S. Attorney for the Department of Justice.

“Forced forfeiture is a very onerous process. It's not fun, and I think that might have something to do with why they're so eager to send the money back,” O’Brien said. “Investors pretty much lost their shirt, and so the government has an obligation to collect what it can from other sources, including people who are required under the law to forfeit the proceeds of a crime.”

As for sending the money to the U.S. Marshals, O’Brien called it “unusual” and “weird.” He wasn’t sure why the funds were directed to the U.S. Marshals but theorized it could be a bureaucratic decision. The Marshals could be taking the funds as a part of its Asset Forfeiture Program, which allows the USMS to manage and sell assets seized and forfeited by the DOJ, according to the U.S. Marshals website.

“The Molinaro campaign sent the contribution it received from an FTX Executive to a U.S. Marshals recovery fund. It will benefit those defrauded by FTX,” said Dave Catalfamo, an adviser to the Molinaro campaign.

Four of the five new disgorgements came from FTX executive, Ryan Salame, a frequent political donor, according to Raw Story’s analysis of FEC records.

Salame’s house was searched by the FBI on April 27, but he has not been charged with a crime.
