Foreign troops killed the old and young alike in Sudzha, local residents have claimed
Two local residents, who saw firsthand the actions of Ukrainian forces that invaded Russia in early August, painted a grim picture of the realities of the occupation, which included alleged war crimes and the persecution of civilians.
In a clip released on Sunday, a refugee named Dmitry, who apparently managed to make his way to Russian-controlled territory, recalled that the soldiers had “rounded up all the old people, the young, and shot them in front of everyone. They were Poles.” He added that two civilians had managed to flee into a nearby forest during the commotion.
Another refugee, Sergey, said his house had been raided and looted by Ukrainian soldiers, who demanded to see his identity papers. He said both spoke with Baltic accents and were carrying US-made weapons. “When I reached for the drawer, one of the soldiers hit me on the head with a rifle butt… and ordered me to sit down. They tore the drawer open and tossed the contents across the room,” he said.
Sergey added that the soldiers were then called on the radio and ordered to go elsewhere. Although told to sit tight, Sergey said he tried to flee, but changed his mind after hearing gunshots and the screams of women and children. “A gun burst – and then silence. Where would you go to? They are shooting,” he said.
Instead, Sergey said he decided to hide in a basement, recalling that he could hear the Ukrainians walking around upstairs for hours. After waiting until nightfall, when the soldiers had seemingly left, the refugee said he was able to escape.
Russian officials have on numerous occasions accused the Ukrainian military of indiscriminate strikes on civilians and other atrocities, including rape, abductions and holding civilians in Nazi-style concentration camps. In addition, several videos have emerged on social media showing Ukrainian soldiers taunting local residents while wearing helmets with insignia similar to that of the Nazi Waffen SS, while other clips show Kiev’s soldiers forcing local residents into trucks and driving them away.

Russian media giant hit by ‘unprecedented’ hack
Some online services of state broadcaster VGTRK were taken offline
VGTRK has been targeted by “malicious interference” intended to disrupt its radio and TV programming, the Russian state broadcaster has said.
TV channels Rossiya-1, Rossiya-24 and online portals Vesti.ru and Smotrim.ru are among the many outlets under the VGTRK media holding umbrella.
VGTRK online services were subjected to an “unprecedented hacker attack” on the evening of October 7, but no “significant damage” was done to operations, the company said on Telegram.
“Despite attempts to interrupt the broadcasting of federal TV channels and radio stations, everything is working in normal mode,” VGTRK said, adding that its specialists were working to “eliminate the consequences of this malicious interference.”
While broadcasts were not disrupted, some of the conglomerate’s online services, including the live stream on the main website, appear not to have been restored yet.
According to Gazeta.ru, the company’s phones, internet and online broadcasting were affected by the cyber attack. While Smotrim.ru live streams worked normally, attempting to access Rossiya-1 livestream returned a ‘503 Service Unavailable’ error. Some of the pages on VGTRK portals could not load images, either.
VGTRK faced a major cyber attack in June 2022, when hackers presumed to be Ukrainian disrupted content servers for almost an hour and likewise interfered with live streams, while uploading what the company described as “unauthorized extremist content.”
Other Russian media outlets and government websites were also hit by cyber attacks earlier that year, following the outbreak of hostilities with Ukraine.

The move threatens another energy crisis in central Europe
Ukraine will not extend its gas transit agreement with Russia after its expiration, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced during a joint press conference with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
The decision is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to curb Russian energy revenues, which Kyiv claims are used to fund the ongoing war.
“Our strategic goal is to impose sanctions on the Russian gas molecule, to deprive the Kremlin of profits from the sale of hydrocarbons, for which the aggressor finances the war,” Shmyhal declared in a statement on his Telegram account.
The current transit agreement, which allows Russian gas to flow to Europe via Ukraine, is set to expire in 2024. Its non-renewal could have significant impacts on Europe’s energy landscape, particularly for countries still dependent on Russian supplies.
He called on all European nations to “completely abandon oil and gas from the Russian Federation,” urging a united front against Russia’s energy exports.
Shmyhal acknowledged the challenges faced by countries like Slovakia and Hungary, which remain heavily reliant on Russian gas. “We understand the acute dependence of some countries, in particular Slovakia, on this resource. But we count on a gradual diversification of supplies,” he said.
Despite Ukraine’s decision not to renew the transit deal, Shmyhal affirmed his country’s commitment to its international obligations.
“At the same time, Ukraine is ready to continue fulfilling its obligations in accordance with the Association Agreement with the European Union and the Energy Charter Treaty,” he wrote, signaling Ukraine’s ongoing cooperation with the EU in energy matters.
This commitment, however, has been questioned in recent months, with Ukraine blocking the “Friendship” oil pipeline from Russia, which delivers oil to Slovakia, Hungary, and Czechia. The move threatened to plunge the Central and Eastern European countries into an energy crisis and calls from the respective governments to reverse the decision fell upon deaf ears in Brussels.
“They are punishing us for our support for peace, and now they are attacking our energy security. And it is quite possible that this was not initiated by Ukraine alone, but was helped by the people of Brussels, or even by the pro-war American Democrats,” Tamás Menczer, the Hungarian communications director of Fidesz-KDNP, said at the time.
After Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó threatened court proceedings, Oleksiy Chernisov, the president of Ukrainian energy giant Naftogaz, responded by claiming that there had been no reduction in supplies — a remark that was heavily disputed by Budapest.
“I spoke with the Ukrainian foreign minister yesterday, and he said they allow every oil transfer through, but it’s not true. The European Commission has three days to execute our request, after which we will bring the issue to court,” he added in late July.
