I refuse on principal to play DRM'd games … that is, anything from Steam. So, currently Rimworld can only be played if I pirate it, and while I've read good things from people who've played it, it doesn't really look worth my time right now.

From GoG though … if they go under, or I move under a rock and stop my internet, I'll still be able to play Kingmaker.

Not very well, mind you. But recent patches to 1.1.0i have improved things and I still get to keep my owlcat of +1 since I agreed to be a beta-tester (IE I bought it before it came out. Subsequent patches exceeded the size of the game, at this point, by about a factor of 3x).

If you like the idea of rimworld, check out dwarf fortress; rimworld was very heavily inspired by it. It trades ease of use and ui for a much much greater amount of depth. It's made by two brothers, been in development since 2006 or something like that. It's also very easy to mod and there's a pony mod for it.

There's other pony mods, certainly. I don't like the idea of an foe mod myself; seems like it would kinda break the high fantasy feel of current dwarf fortress. Really, as you learn, you realize the game is actually really easy, at least in terms of keeping your citizens alive. My current fortress is a year in (game time) , and we've only had one death from a child who went insane from not having what he wanted for a strange mood. It's definitely worth getting over the learning curve.

I cant get past the asci graphics of DF. Adventure mode is fine but dwarf mode is fucking gay when every single minute little icon is important and I cant remember every single fucking one. Plus my dwarves dont replant their goddamn seeds when theyre done so I have to make a kajillion farms for each kind of seed and hope they can fit it into their busy schedules to work one, and I spend so long focusing on basic infrastructure that the first minor goblin raid is the end of my colony. plus fuck micromanaging gear for guards that's gay enough in rimworld

You can install tilesets that make it a little easier to work with. I assumed you already figured that out from the screenshot, but there are many that add basic sprites to just about every creature in the game. As for farms, maybe you only scheduled for one season? I dunno, I've never used farms that much. Colony defense is at first most easily handled by having only a single exit with a drawbridge or a wall that you build at the first sign of danger. Micromanaging the military is total ass though, that is true.

It seems to me like you just need to play a bit more so you can get used to some quirks of the game.
