The real question is "where did Celestia and Luna" come from, if they wheren't born as regular ponies, nor as alicorns? Do alicorns reproduce via something like cellular mitosis or something?

This isn't an important part of the question, just an example of how their lack of a central creative director who's vision for the world is resulting in the show's worldbuilding being actively undermined by their attempts at character building. Might as easily have raised questions about all those ethnic groups in equestria, that somehow all decended from the original 3 tribes, yet have been around so long they have resulted in local breeds of ponies, like the crystal ponies, or those asian unicorns with curved horns. I just don't see how they could have done that without an insane eugenics program and ethnically cleansing anyone who refused to participate, especially given the short time frame.

Anyways, the specifics aren't important, just challenging them to explain why they can't keep their own lore straight, should be the point of the question.

What Celestia and Luna say only makes sense if they are surprised by the very possibility of an alicorn being born. What sense is there in being surprised that something has happened since the founding of the country, when they both not only know it can be done, because they themselves where born as alicorns, but that it did, TWICE not a decade before the founding of the country. Even within the dumbest of logic, such a statement would stand out as being unusually stupid.

Further, this would raise questions about where Cadance came from, unless you assume Celestia flat out lied to Twilight when she told her that a regular pony ascending to become an Alicorn was something that had never happened before. She was a teenager when Twilight was young, so she is obviously younger than Equestria.
