BEST NEW CHARACTER

Another season has come and gone, and yet the ride still continues. What are your thoughts on S7? Did it meet your expectations? How did it compare to previous seasons? We’ll have plenty of time to discuss this season to death while we wait for S8.

S7 had some highs and lows. Overall I enjoyed it, but broadly speaking it didn't "wow" me. I'd probably rate it similarly to Season 4.

As far as world building goes, I haven;t liked the direction things have taken since S3, with a few exceptions, but the introduction of the Pillars could be a turnaround.

The first half of the season was notable for making surprisingly good episodes out of the absolute worst story ideas. The tone and scale even felt in tune with the old show for the first time in a long time. Then the second half started up, and shit got stupid again. There were still a few good episodes, but Season Seven felt like a tale of two halves. One thing does seem to be consistent now: when Lewis and Songco are the writers, the episode is awesome. Maybe it's just a coincidence. Maybe they take the best episode ideas for themselves, or maybe they are just that good. Who knows?

Season Seven, despite its lacklustre second half, exceeded my very low expectations. Season Six had been generally weak, all the old writers were gone, and it looked like the show had nothing left in the tank. I don't think anyone expected the new season to be even half-way decent.

There are a few contenders for the season's best episode. "Perfect Pear" was a home run that managed to actually tell the story of Applejack's parents without breaking the universe or being sappy. Sure it was just Romeo and Juliet all over again, but the narrative structure made it seem somewhat new. "Forever Filly" accomplished something that few episodes have successfully done--make sense of the changes in a character that had been changing quite a bit as the series ran on. It actually gave this new Sweetie Belle with the teenager's voice who watches show tunes a clearly defined personality and told an uncommon and relatably story at the same time. Of course, Rarity still stole the show, like she always does when she shares top billing. "Secrets and Pies" also deserves a mention just for being belly-laugh-funny. It was a classic slow burn featuring the worrysomely deranged Pinkie Pie who was so much fun in "Party of One." The new episode felt very much like that great old episode.

I can't remember a single one of those songs particularly well. "You're In My Head Like a Catchy Song" has the distinct advantage of having appeared in a really good episode.

The best new character as far as I'm concerned is Strawberry Sunrise, hands down. Her telling Applejack off to her face was just priceless. My god, I hope that they bring her back.

I’ll bump this thread one more time before giving up on it.

I was thinking about how I’d rate this season’s finale specifically, and how I’d rank it amongst the other finales. I think Shadow Play is definitely one of the best finales, if not the best. Granted, thats not saying much since most of this show’s finales range from mediocre to bad. One of the best things it had going for it was that it was able to touch on the lore without fucking shit up even more unless you’re the kind of person who got significantly upset about the Sirens, which I am not. On top of that, they even took the time to try and go back and justify some of the more blatant “buy our toys” changes from previous seasons. This show has a bad habit of throwing in shit like that (eg Twilicorn, Rainbow Power, Cadance) with no explanation and no in-universe justification. That fact that they went through the trouble of giving the Tree of Harmony and the Crystal Castle Playset™ at least a backstory shows that they’re trying to lessen the impact of the executive-driven plot changes.

Concerning Stygian/The Pony of Shadows, I think that he’s about average on the villain ranking: not quite as one-dimensional as Sombra or Tirek, but not quite as interesting as Starlight. At least they didn’t go with the “DBZ laser battle” ending like with Tirek. Maybe someday they might have another comfy, SoL finale like S1. Moving forward, I think this finale actually provides some opportunity for something this show hasn’t had in a long time: plot progression. The story has kinda been on repeat ever since the map started being the main plot element, but they may try to change things up a bit going forward now that they have the new characters to work with. A few years ago I wouldnt have cared much about the story and probably would have preferred things staying relatively comfy and contained, but at this point in time I realize there’s no real going back to the way things were. The adventure stuff is here to stay, so my biggest request is just that they do it well.

I think Shadow Play was around an 8 or 9 out of 10. I’d put the final ranking at S1 > S7 > S5 > S6 > S2 > S4 > S3. I still think The Best Night Ever was 10/10 and perfectly encompasses the spirit of the SoL S1 era of the show. I put Shadow Play just below it because it did have some issues, but it didn’t ruin pre-existing characters or fuck up the lore like the other finales did.

You make me want to actually watch the finale. Honestly, I had just stopped watching two-parters, because they have been fuck-awful for years.

It's cause you're making walls of text. If you could cut down your sayings into bite sized memes I'd guarantee more replies..

Also Pear Butter a cute and Perfect Pear best episode. Any episode that can make me cry is automatically exceptional, and this was the only exceptional episode of the whole series. Also the Sugar Belle and Rumble episodes were pretty comfy, and the boat one was funny even though it gets worse every time I think too.hard about it.
