Also, why was Twilight retarded throughout the entire movie? She only teleports once in the entire movie and never uses her telekinesis for anything, despite numerous times either would have instantly resolved problems she had. And she never uses any other kind of magic.

The white spots in their eyes are transparent because if otherwise it would look bad on film. I don't even know if MLP is getting 35mm prints since most of the world had switched to digital, and i did see EqG in theatres years ago with the standard FiM eyes and it wasn't an issue. I don't think digital projectors should have an issue with opaque white spotted eyes, it could be distracting but they could just turn down the gamma of those whites.

It was actually much better then I expected, and I think I might end up supporting it at the movies even though I saw it here on the internet.

And first I didn't know what to think about the art style but it grew on me. And the they seemed out of place compared to some of the other characters they introduced but it adds to the lore. I liked how it made them seem more like they were in season 1 and 2 where they weren't big shots yet.

And where the fuck were starlight and discord?

So I just watched through it for the second time, so now think I can comment on it a bit more thoroughly since I don’t have to deal with the shock of seeing this shit for the first time. spoilers abound, obviously.

it is never ever a good idea to start shoving beast races into your fantasy setting. Other than the obvious detriment of inviting furries into your fanbase, it also increases the number of questions to be asked about your setting which in most cases are either poorly addressed or just not addressed at all. In MLP’s case, it also violates the convention of the intelligent races being pretty much all just talking animals and/or mythological creatures. Throwing cat-people and bird-people and insert-animal-here-people into the mix does nothing to improve the worldbuilding and invites all kinds of autism. Yes, the Diamond Dogs are already a thing, but they were an isolated instance which thankfully never threw a wrench into the worldbuilding very much.

Did Celestia know that the Hippogryphs had fled underwater and used the orb to make them into seaponies? Did she actually expect Luna to get the orb and use it or something? If she knew that the Storm King had attacked them in the past, then she probably also knew that they had failed to defend their homes and had just fled, so she wasnt planning on getting some sort of advice on how to beat him from them. this plot makes absolutely no sense.

Final thoughts: at least EqG is somewhat self-contained, but not so with this movie. I predict there will be many people writing off this movie as “not canon” so that they don’t have to associate it with the rest of the show. I personally dont think that it would have been worth the $15 it would have cost me to see this in a theatre. For me, it falls into “skippable episode” tier i.e. I’ll probably never go out of my way to watch it again. This movie could have been so much more than it was, but it is what it is. Now I wonder what this movie would have been like if it had been made a few years ago back before Hasbro began to scare off the fanbase with shit decisions and all the old guard left.

I wanna support it because it's visually great, but the repeated music were annoying. The story is devoid of depth or anything, the characters are hardly present, or not doing anything. Besides Pinkie Pie, RD is an embarrassment… It's mostly about Twilight, a musical comedy.

There's no feelings, little presence, it's really written like a bad episode, and coming from a skilled writer it should not be like this.

They just made her 3D drawn mouth flap open and closed to the song most of the time and it really took away from the scene

As for my opinions on the rest of the movie

Why wasn't Trixie, Starlight, and Discord involved in the movie?

The story would have drastically changed for the better

Also, this movie was so fucking rushed it makes me frustrated

It's like the Hasdrones said "I wonder how many clichés we can stick in the movie so we can call it a day"

And the stupid thing is, is that they couldn't even make the clichés work the way they wanted them to

Same, it was good. the moment when imprisoned Sia start singing is also giving muh feels. but on all the rest it's been vastly butchered, bad screenplay, trying to cast everything for people who watch ponies not knowing the series, and that's bad in the end. IE, not the kind of places in the movie, not the kind of bland characters in the movie and not the kind of predictable crap and mediocre songs we got in the movie…

The cat was bland, the generic city they visited was forgettable, the visit to the sea ponies lasted just one song that I bet none of you fuckers can even remember the chorus for and the bad guys where so painfully stereotypical they are beyond saving.

If you wanted to work with the designs they had for the badguys they should have changed their personalities dramatically.

You can't have your big bad be both intimidating and cracking jokes like he's the comedic sidekick at the same time. This is insanely hard to pull off, since jokes and silly hijinks will undermine any aura of menace he is trying to project and any menace he is trying to project will most likely ruin any jokes he could be making. Pick one and roll with it instead of trying to be both.

The edgelord OC was just boring. These characters have been done to death, even in the show. The only way they could have worked with this design, was by trying to make it as over the top as possible, as a caricature of this kind of fan characters, as used it as a joke.

This could be used with a Stormking who was primarily written to be a comedic buffoon as her foil in a Zap Branagan kind of way, leaving the edgelord to try to keep his invasion working while openly resenting his antics as they undermine everything they are doing. This would not only give the edgelord an excuse to be constantly on the edge and angry, but would also make the viewers sympathise with her in the process.

This could be further helped by having the Stitch 2.0 be a silly goof who's sent along with the edgelord to do something. His antics will seemingly do nothing, only to be berated by the edgelord, before revealing that what he was doing was actually helpful in some unexpected way.

Did anyone see that Hanazuki short they said they would show?

Mocking synopsis

Evil army invades and Twilight it forced to go on a quest to find Hippos which turns out to be hippogryphs, and on the way she's forced to repeatedly endure her psychotic pink friend who repeatedly almost gets them and herself killed and her autistic jock friend who does jock behavior things and repeatedly almost gets them and herself killed

They find the Hippogryphs who have turned into seaponies to escape the Storm King, a villain that only has 4-5 minutes of screen time doing his best Handsome Jack impression BTW, who refuses to help Twilight because it's safer under the sea, so Twilight figures if her psychotic friend and jock friend are great at causing distractions, so she lets them cause a distraction while she attempts to steal the mega powerful pearl that can turn you into sea ponies etc that is never brought up in the film again and they all get thrown out

All of Twilights friends are mad at her because they used them as a distraction to try and steal the pearl mcguffin and Twilight tells them that they're all being stupid useless cunts because they keep singing and dancing and shit is actually serious and they need to stop dancing around with their heads shoved up their ass and makes the rather honest point that they are indeed being terrible friends, to which they demonize Twilight because how dare she get upset at the psychotic and the autistic jock

The real main villain Tempest who has been tailing them the whole movie shows up and they get back to the castle in less than a few hours when the prior trip took 3 days and Handsome Jack shows up and for some reason the throne room was designed for the purpose in mind to steal all the princesses magic, to which he does and does Handsome Jack things with his new found god power and betrays Tempest and Twilight saves her

Said friends blast off in fully psychotics cannon and break through a wind tornado Handsome Jack created which sets up a chain of events to cause it to get stuck in glass, a 2 minute section of cry cry when Twilight just floats down like not a care in the world, Handsome Jack is still alive and Tempest stops his mega crystal spell which before only Tempest could make so I don't fucking know and they both turn to stone and fall and Twlight saves Tempest and Handsome Jack humpty dumpties so there's a death in a cartoon about pastel ponies

Blah blah music pony that Twilight idols for some reason unknown to reality and everyone treats with more respect than all the princesses combined for some reason, worshipped in the film to the point where her and Twilight had to have a touching moment before magical power suckitude happened puts on a show and Tempest reveals that all ponies names are destiny and having her parents name their daughter Fizzlepop because her magic with a broken horn is so powerful it fizzles and pops almost doomed pony land because of a name

Well to be fair all of the hippos can fly while only 4 members of the party could fly, the pirrots lost their ship and they had to prepare a cake to hide in.

I thought the movie was great tbh. Some of the songs were shit (and there were too many of them) yeah, but they seemed to gradually get better as the movie went on. The hand-animated pones were qt, the humor was consistent with a few hiccups here and there (mostly owing to the fat little hyena from Lion King-looking ass nigga). The story was perfectly serviceable, it didn't take many chances but it didn't trip itself up too often either.

This part was the biggest plot hole. The film had its share of problems but this literally made me sit up and ask 'how the fuck did they get back so soon?'. They didn't even build a rudimentary ship carried by the flying characters, or something. Nope, they traveled halfway across Equestria stupidly fast with no explanation. I just don't know how that gets written.

Despite that, and other problems, I gotta admit I did enjoy watching it. It was far from perfect, but I liked most of the songs, the animation, the backgrounds, and the mane 6.

Really wish they hadn't hired non-voice actors though. The actors they hired for the new characters were so out of place, especially the nigger playing the sea-pony queen. Awful.

Considering the movies fatal flaw was divorcing itself as far as possible from the series, I don't think so.

I mean, there had to be at least some disconnect for a general audience, but they didn't even have royal guards. If only there was a scene at the beginning of the film where the guards could have been helpful in justifying an escape and establishing a threat.

The whole movie works better if the beginning focus is on Tempest sneaking in, rather than rolling on on a ship, and setting up a trap to neutralize the princesses rather than chucking balls of macguffinite at them. Then you could have the guard organize to fight the invaders as they get the princess out of harms way, which could give you a scene with Shining Armor saying they need backup with a throwaway line that if they were a bit stronger per pony they could actually re-take the castle. Which sets up the form changing orb and a conflict between recruiting the hippogriff vs using the magic to do it themselves. If you sprinkle in Twilight Sparkle getting a little suspicious of new people from Capper and the Pirates, then you actually have a character arc that makes sense.

They were close to something with this. You know what it is? It's having a student put in a C+ paper and realizing had they applied themselves or challenged themselves their core concept could have been an A.

Also, Storm King needed to be there at the start actually doing something to establish him as a threat if they're doing the jokey personality they gave him.

Aw man, When I watched it I didn't see that rainbow blur at all. But checking now, and yeah, Derpy is running toward Twilight but her mouth has no lipsync when Twilight's name is called, and then the rainbow blur, then the next shot with Twilight is with RD.

Derpy taking the hit was just her running in that direction. I also thought it was Derpy calling Twilight's name because she's listed in the credits as part of Tabitha's list of characters.

Having just seen this movie … maybe they would melt crossing the desert … or maybe with no sapients to act as a medium, they couldn't feel the waves of anger traveling to them.

It was a cartoon. It was cute. I honestly don't know why they included Sia/Songbird because she was a useless extra. But other than that while not matching any particular canon of the show, thus clearly we were seeing an AU version of MLP, I didn't think it was handled any worse than the show or the comics.

Again, so long as you remember each has separate canon for its own AU.

I think the movie could have been fine with the existing generic writing. The lack of the exciting and emotional setpieces was the biggest issue in the film. The original idea of all the Hippogriffs coming to fight for them would have produced a much more believable spectacle for the ending. Things like Celaeno's ship being destroyed and the princesses being captured were plain boring in the way they were framed when they could have been an epic visual spectacles packed with emotion.

The reveal of Seaquestria was fucking laughable. You've got this epic buildup complete with immersive orchestral backing leading up to… a single flat graphic of what's supposed to be a distant shot of an amazing kingdom for the seaponies. There was no depth to it and I didn't get any sense of wonder from the reveal.

The final 30 minutes are trash. You've got this great song with Tempest but it's storyboarded like a simple fan animation. There's this cringeworthy sequence where the chorus of "You caged at my command" occurs in the most literal sense possible not once but multiples times. The setting itself so plain and uninteresting and highlights the most jarring use of 3d in the movie. You're there in that same boring dynamic for almost 2 full minutes and between that you've got the shift to the storybook art style. Normally I wouldn't complain about this stylistic shift but I found that paired with the already awful, uninteresting dark cage setting, it made the entire sequence feel low budget and ugly. The song should have taken place over the course of Twilight being shown the destruction of Canterlot and the caged, ending with her next to the stoned princesses.

The actual ending was plain awful. The way Twilight was presumed dead was unconvincing on all levels. Then they proceeded to take that contextually beautiful Sia song and raped the context dead. It's used like a dance party song when it's supposed to be an emotional look at Tempest's progression throughout the movie.

Seaquestria was a bit of a let-down as presented, and Celaeno's ship going down could have been done a bit better but I feel they made up for it when they picked the mane-5 back up a few scenes later. But nothing as jarring or Equestria-shatting as you present here.
