Summary:
"Starlight Glimmer and Trixie visit Thorax at the changeling hive where they meet his brother, Pharynx, the only changeling still unwilling to share love and transform. Worried that Pharynx’s bad attitude will undermine Thorax’s leadership, they work to get him to accept that love is a strength and not a weakness." - Discovery Family

Remember kids, if you think differently to the rest of the hive, you need to be corrected. By force if neccessary.
Given recent drama surrounding some VA's and conventions on social media, this one may hit home for some more than others.
Is this the point where the show stops giving a more universal message of friendship and veers deeper into more ideological territory?
Is it already there?
Whatever, man. I'm just here for horses.
And the porn.
Horse porn.

It's a 'let's reuse all the background assets from a previous episode' episode!
And wow, usually this show is pretty good coming up with new creatures and monsters, but a green cloud/swarm? Guess they gotta save money somewhere.
Eh, I'm sure the 'stories' will have something more interesting and show where they put the budget for this episode.

>These characters where made by the comics, exploring minor side stories about each of them but only giving general summaries about what they are actually known for where totally made for the comic originally, even though the show introduces each character with their actual legend and not just some fucking sideshow.
You may want to doublecheck that logic fam. Its painfully obvious that those comics where based on designs and information provided by the shows creators and the comics where simply finished and published before the episode. They are still quite clearly show designs and not comic book originals.
Come back with you "muh comics are totally canon gais" routine when the show retcons NMM's background story to involve moonmen making Luna evil or a pack of minotaurs start trying to take over appaloosa and the mane 6 have to commit fraud to save the day.

>all this denial
The people writing the comics and the people writing the show are in a room together making up a shared world. Even with the older comics, Meghan McCarthy's name appears in the credits as a creative consultant. Different teams are woeking on each, but the universe that they are working with is the same. It's like different trillogies of Star Wars.
Why are you idiots even interested in preserving the integrity of a canon that has not been coherent since Rob Renzetti left? It's not as if the show's canon is some well-crafted fantasy world with consistent characters in it. It has been a complete shitshow for years. By the way, anyone else remember when the comic writers kept using unicorn Twilight after MMC until Hasbro made them change? Because the universes had to match.

Where are the intelligent deers in the show?
Why do noone in the show ever mention the shit they do in the comics?
Where are all the comic's characters in the show?
Sure as fuck looks like the writers and show makers don't consider the comics canon. Most likely some licensing issue, or because the writers who write for the show at least can recognise the comics for the pile of amateurish dogwaddle it is.
The show is no longer as good as it used to be, no one is arguing that, but its still a damned sight better than the comics, which is why noone here wants the comics to be made canon.

I want to shot web right in Sweetie Belle's eye.
I really liked this episode. Applejack's story was meh, and so was Rainbow's, although I liked that Torch made a cameo. Rarity's was amazing and completely made this episode for me. The Asian aesthetics were very cool, and the magic dragon fight was well-animated. Seeing Mistmane give up her beauty to save her town and more importantly to save her friend was an incredibly beautiful moment, and I would be lying if I said my eyes were totally dry at the end there.

Sweetie Belle taking a load in the eye was definitely the highlight. I am glad that they did not pitch-up the voices of the Crusaders again, but damn do those voices not match their bodies. Even Scootaloo sounds older, and Madeleine Peters was already past puberty when she started voicing Scootaloo seven years ago. They seriously are going to need bigger character models. Let them grow up already.

She seemed like she always does to me, but starting a cave-in to keep bugs out was spectacularly stupid, even for her. That was not even the stupidest thing that one of the characters did, though. Aging them could work. Maybe they graduate Cheerliee's tiny school that only ever seems to teach 9 foals at a time. Maybe it'd give them a few new stories. I'd be wary of it though, it could easily fall into cliche'd teen high school tropes, which EqG already does.

There is nothing ironic about it. It's just the Unity of Opposites in action. Two identities whose sole consistent distinction is their fundamental opposition to one another endlessly create one another. Each side takes turns being dominant. The one that is dominant takes on all the trappings of dominance which in turn inspires opposition to that side in the form of its opposite which grows until it becomes dominant and starts the processes over again. Neither ever achieves its goal, because its goal is defined by the elimination of the very opposition that it itself creates.

All in all an ok episode. I'm glad that it wasn't so much the brother reforming as finding a way to function inside the society. If anything the moral of the story seemed to be 'you can't function as a species if you go full tumblr' with the lone asshole basically being proven right in the end.
At some point I was convinced that he would just be the 'old ways' guy that was in charge of defense and wouldn't reform. Though I did like that they made the two brothers the rulers of the changelings as opposed to the two sisters for the ponies.

It helped that there was an actual physical threat to the Changelings too, and that Pharynx wasn't trying to screw over the new hive or bring Chrysalis back, but protect everyone. Pharnyx was right that the swarm would've been able to take it on, but they lacked the martial conviction and recent practice necessary to do so. He only hated what the Changelings became because he believed their change would allow their enemies to easily destroy the hive, not because they became different. Everyone agreed about the threat but they had different methods and too much of a social clash. It's like if a military guy or a police officer were had hipsters and nu-males for relatives, but with the actual chance of finding a way to get along, since leftists will sell out their own family members even faster than they would anyone outside their family tree.

Yeah, they missed a real opportunity there. I'm not enamored with the changeling redemption (or the changelings in general) but they were going to do it they should have been more consistent. I'd have leveraged the fact that the changelings are shapeshifters. Have a changeling's redemption transform them into something representing their true self. Make it a parallel to the cutie marks; choosing to be good instead of blindly following Chrysalis' old evil orders should involve a level of self discovery which could be reflected in their new appearance. Thorax looks like a fruity deer because that's who he is. The other changelings copied their new leader because that's who they are. Pharynx should have changed into something fierce like the bug monster he turned into multiple times (foreshadowing!). That would have been cooler, more original, toyetic, and it would have let them reinforce the theme of the episode. What the others interpreted as meaness was Pharynx's inarticulate concern for the security of the hive. They could have visually reiterated that theme by making Pharynx something which, in Aragorn's words, "looks foul but feels fair". Hit the old children's story moral of pretty doesn't imply good and ugly doesn't imply evil.
That could have given them something to work with in the future too. Have some Cutie Mark Crusader episodes with changelings where the personal growth is more meaningful than "try random shit till your ass glows". Have a foil episode where a changeling uses their ability to become as beautiful as they want to manipulate others. Have a changeling wrestle with how they feel weak and silly now compared with how they were before (moral: good is not weak -> battle brother for Pharynx). Could have been pretty interesting.

Eurgh, the Hive turned into a hippie commune.
I was hoping Pharynx could stay as he was, and of course he didn't, but on the plus side his Gay Moth version looked better than the others, and closer to his original darker shades. He doesn't look so terribly garish.
And they all realized that there was a need for what is essentially a military general. Pharynx changed physically but it was the Hive whose minds needed to be changed not Pharynx.
I still don't quite understand how Thorax and Pharynx are brothers. Aren't they all siblings? Do they differentiate between brood clutches laid at different times? If so, surely just the two of them wouldn't have been a single clutch?
Also, some of them are clearly female due to their voices, do any of them lay eggs? Can any changeling lay eggs?
It's a small blessing, but it wasn't quite as bad as I assumed it would be.
Also Trixie is always great.

7/10. Trixie and Glimmer are always fun, but Trixie's "great and powerful" bit has ran it's course and needs to die.
