Perhaps that's my issue, then.
Never liked fate. Fate's a shitheap, you ask me. Someone tells me it's 'fate' to do something, I'm more inclined to flip them off and do the opposite.
Ultimately we can't know our fate. But that's not really the point. You shouldn't live with fate hanging over your head. You shouldn't live knowing your purpose. You shouldn't simply fit in a specific slot.
People ought to find their own goal in life, absent of any specific role or meaning. You don't improve or strive to greener pastures when you know your role in society, when you have your cog in the machine. That, to me, strikes me as major cancer.
Maybe that's why pony society seems to be on the whole so stagnant.
Not that any other races're shown to be much better, but all the same.

This is a bit fairer, but it really depends on how you interpret the mark at that point, still. And of course, you're also still stuck in the position you interpret it to.
I've still got doubts how a train-marked pony's going to be a carrot farmer, or the janitor marked pony's going to be a clarinetist.

You, fate, it doesn't matter, you're still stuck in the same rut. Sure, you say "he likes janitoring", but I'd ask, would he really be mopping people's floors were he to not have that mark?
Would he really choose to clean toilets instead of striving to something better?
I've got my doubts.
