It's an executive mandated episode for the sake of selling the gala dresses toys for the mane6 and the Canterlot castle set. Hasbro only allowed that loose 3 episode continuity between episodes to sell toys.

I'm really curious who's bright idea was to make all 6 of them fail at their crappy little goals which weren't that grand to begin with.

It's especially funny how the finale ends up being about nothing. All the plans the mane6 had in their heads were by them. The gala event itself was about nothing. There was no external story/plot trying to get into the characters way. Except for that director/writer who decide to make all of them fail for no reason.

Every normal finale ends on a happy note where all 6 of them accomplish their life-long goals and everything gets tied up.

This finale instead ended on a sour note, letting us think that the show wasn't done yet and they still had plans for a second season before it got cancelled.

At the end, Celestia says that the fiasco made the boring gala better like she'd hoped, so it wasn't really a "sour note." And aside from that, I actually prefer it when shows end prematurely with all the characters still in the prime of life and pursuing their dreams, because then they are immortalized in your imagination as still having limitless possibilities. So the finale was pretty much perfect, IMHO–firmly reemphasized the main characters, gave them their due, and left them with infinite potential for further development.

You know what was good?

The creative goofing around dream sequences, the eloquent dialogue, the secondary plots in the 2x11 episode structure and the characters actually interacting openly(instead of being too focused on the action-story at hand(swarm of the century) )

But yes the other half was complete garbage. Stereotypical personalities, everyone is an asshole to Twilight Sparkle, she is too kind and humble.

The cartoon is far too childish and the plots are underwhelming even for children's slice of life standards.

MLP still tries to be too much like a little toddler's cartoon where every enemy is dealt with indirectly through nurturing.

MLP still doesn't break the cliche that retards like Piggy Pie need to be beaten and humiliated for being stupid.

Slice of life cartoons like Class 402 and Hey Arnold! have more shit going on than FIM's plots.

Most of the cartoon show the ponies just stood around fantasizing and talking for 22 minutes instead of progressing the non-existant plot.

I love how they tried to shove in serious interesting stuff like Pinkie's psychosis, Luna and Celestia, the world design, cutie marks, but they never expand on it or even play around with the idea. Other SoL shows at least have a semblance of plot happening and other adventure cartoons fully explore their character's backstory since episode 1. In FIM every piece of lore, setting, history is made up on the spot for plot convenience.

It felt so unfinished and tacked-on together at the last minute. All that creativity, eloquent dialogue and world setting went to waste.

The life lessons were also contradicting as shit despite how much heart is put into the royal letter writing scenes.

We had one season which wasn't even that good at excelling on acting as an anti-depressant.

And 3 days after Best Night Ever aired Faust announced she quit the show and in less than 5 months they took it away everything that made FIM seemingly unique and charming.
