Fuck! Fluttershy appreciating him for being himself instead of normifying himself, and then acting like him, made my hearts' dick hard!

Also, it's funny that Discord has had more episodes devoted to him than Celestia.

fd9e71 (4) No.292046>>292060

So let me get this straight.

Discord, being a creature of pure chaos, fades from reality if he begins observing socially accepted customs from one particular group?

That has to be one of most mindbogglingly idiotic contrivances for driving the story's conflict I have ever heard.

Wouldn't this literally endanger his life every single time he has been in an episode where he had to learn to be more normal. As in ALL OF HIS EPISODES after his redemption.

But, isn't "normal" an entirely subjective position, differing from individual to individual and culture to culture? Just look at the differences between liberals and sane people.

Is it others observing him and not considering him unusual what literally erases him from reality? Kind of makes him the ultimate attention whore then.

Other than that, I suppose it was cute enough for the episode to be fully passable.

He fades from reality when he himself brings order to chaos (like organizing his house), not when he conforms to any one society. He's already done that, within his bounds of inner chaos, of course. So just because I masturbate in a parking-lot, doesn't mean I disregard all the other rules. You get what I'm saying? He's chaotic-neutral/good. Bam.

fd9e71 (4) No.292062>>292063

>brings order to chaos

But chaos IS subjective. What one person thinks is a big chaotic mess, is a perfectly organised pile of TPS reports.

And seeing that he was in his little dimension of chaos, him trying to make part of it seem "normal" however the fuck you define normal without being subjective was making it less like everything in the rest of that dimension, and thus more chaotic from the subjective standpoint of anyone in that dimension.

If you really want to get metaphysical about it, chaos, being essentially everything, including nothing and usually changing from one thing to another all the time, is among the infinite myraid of possibilities of what it can be, also normal things. Chaos is essentially everything in the universe, all the stuff that is, can be and may not be and all the impossible things too. Order is just those things we have thought up systems and patterns for. But since both order, systems and patterns are all abstract concepts, they do not exist anywhere but in our perception of the world. Order is nothing but an illusion we force onto the raw stuff of creation to help us tell apart a chair from a few random pieces of wood with a cushion on it. In short, order is nothing but an abstract concept you have to learn, things do not seize to exist simply because they observe such nonexistant rules.

Ya dig?

Don't give me that D&D allignment bullshit.

He has been a devious schemer and planner before. Its not like he has to be lolrandumb or he will go poof, nor has he shown himself to be physically incapable of following rules before.

Order is a subjective point of view. The kind of order he made was highly chaotic from the point of view of anything in the chaos dimension he was in.

From this we can deduce, that the order he was allergic to was neither being predictable, obeying rules, expectations nor merely making his surroundings act the way they would normally be expected to work.

But that symbol has been randomly appearing since season 1, I think it has something to do with Luna in the context of the show because it has appeared alot with episodes she is in or nighttime episodes.

> The most commonly held theory, and the one you are most likely to find via a cursory Google search, posits that it was once the sign for a woman’s toilet. As the story goes, in the 1800s and earlier, literacy wasn’t widespread, so the common symbol used to differentiate between a men’s privy and a women’s was that the men’s door carried a sun or star symbol, while the women’s stalls were marked with a moon. According to the book Outhouses by Holly Bollinger, this cosmic dichotomy was devised based on ancient imagery. “With the crescent moon signifying Luna or Goddess Diana it became known as a feminine symbol, therefore welcoming womenfolk,” Bollinger writes. This might seem like a lofty reading of bathroom symbolism, but the moon has long been associated with a female aspect, and it’s not unreasonable to think that this would have been general knowledge.

> So how did the women’s room symbol come to represent all outhouses? Bollinger’s book goes on to suggest that men’s outhouses were not as well kept up, so eventually, to conserve resources and labor, male stalls were taken down, and the remaining moon-doored stalls became a symbol of unisex bathrooms, and outhouses in general. One version of this theory, shared in the 1989 book The Vanishing American Outhouse (as quoted by The Straight Dope) says that it was during the mid-1800s that the general public forgot the original meaning behind the moons, and just began seeing them as the symbol for an outhouse.

It's probably a just so story but forget it, we're rolling. It does make me wonder exactly what Faust intended with the Sun:Moon / Day:Night dichotomy as it almost always a core symbol in mythology (Apollo and Artemis, Sol and Mani, Spenta Mainyu and Ahriman, the Maya Hero Twins, etc.)

I think that mythology was exactly what she was aiming for. Season One Celestia was an aloof and mysterious goddess whom the main characters regarded with awe and worship. Like a pharoah, she had one foot in the mortal realm and the other in the divine realm. It was only fitting that she had some mythology attached to her.

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/576/why-do-outhouse-doors-have-half-moons-on-them

It's a North American colonial tradition going back to the 18th

Outhouses have no lighting--normally. They have to have some kind of window to let in light so you can see to wipe your ass and button up your trousers. And it used to be that a crescent moon shaped window meant "ladies' room" as a reference to Diana, Goddess of the Moon. A round hole for the sun meant "men's room."

A lot of farms and such only had one outhouse, so by default it got the crescent moon shaped window, meaning the farm's women were allowed to use it. And after some generations passed people just started associating the crescent moon shape with outhouse doors. Some will tell you it's a little pun about "nightsoil," but no, it's nothing that clever.

The addition of the little five-pointed star could be a jab at Islam or Turkey, possibly. Then again, a few artisans added little star-shaped cutouts around the "moon" to show off their l33t woodworking skillz. See second image.

So I am guessing that a background artist is more likely to have just looked at old pictures of outhouses and seen a lot with that design on or above the door. It seems more plausible than a secret animator conspiracy to insert anti-Islam propaganda into the background of scenes a few seconds long.

Not that this will keep the Usual Suspects from claiming to be offended, when they notice. Of course.

>It does make me wonder exactly what Faust intended with the Sun:Moon / Day:Night dichotomy

I do not know Lauren Faust and do not speak for her. What follows is guesswork, but to my way of thinking it is plausible guesswork.

Sunbutt, being not only a sun goddess but also symbolically everypone's magical mommy, would be the one I'd expect, if I were reading the Equestrian version of The Golden Bough, to be the one venerated at fertility and harvest festivals: the divine living life-giving Sun, who brings warmth, summer, the harvest, and life.

Whereas Luna is the bringer of night, darkness, winter, and death. She might even be a psychopomp (being who guides the souls of the dead to the afterlife); the pones still offer sacrifices to her "Nightmare Moon" aspect after the harvest, when the life-giving crops have died for another year and the cold winds blow. Notice how much skull/skeleton imagery there is associated with Nightmare Night. It's clearly the pone version of Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead.

So I'd expect--again, from a comparative mythology perspective–Sunbutt to be the intended recipient of sacrifices, possibly human–er, pone–sacrifices at the spring and autumn solstice. Moonbutt is the goddess of death, or rather her Nightmare Moon aspect is. She doesn't get so much in the way of sacrifices, though it's also possible that a death-cult may have grown up around her in centuries past, one that, like the Thuggee cult of Kali, sacrificed sentients to her. One doesn't imagine she took that very well or let it go on very long, though.

Do they still read Fraser in comparative mythology classes? Or is The Golden Bough no longer sufficiently PC to be acceptable in higher education?

Celestia is yang: action, motion, warmth, light, life, creation, fertility, the sun, the sky, hot dry wind, order

Luna is her shadow and her dark mirror reflection, her opposite, which is yin: passivity, stillness, cold, darkness, death, destruction, night, the valley, the cavern, cold rain, entropy

6be3a0 (1) No.292935>>292936

>>292882

I kind of get the idea that there was originally no Luna, given she was the original 'Discord', and Laura originally only wanted "Queen Celestia."

b653b5 (4) No.292936>>292941 >>293171

>>292935

Well, that might be a bit more keeping in with the tone of the orignal 1980s cartoons, which had a tall, pretty white unicorn, "Queen Majesty," who was vastly more magically powerful than everyone else, and who was the normal "little" ponies' authority figure and protector. Does this sound at all familiar to you?

Queen Majesty wasn't quite as patient or forgiving as Sunbutt, though--if someone hurt her little ponies, if she got mad enough, she could magically "turn them into bubbles and make them float away on the wind and disappear," which sure looked like onscreen death, and was pretty fucking hardcore for a 1980s cartoon for little girls. Every other time you saw her she was running up that body count–giants or ogres or dragons or rockdogs or whatever would try to kidnap a pony, and nope, she'd be right there, and ZOT, carve three more notches on the side of her horn for confirmed kills. She was pretty ruthless and a little bit scary, actually. Tirek or Chrysalis would have gotten zapped dead about three words into their villain monologues and that would have been that. Celestia's a soft-hearted, harmless little marshmallow compared to her, though the resemblance is still pretty clear. Maybe they're related.

I'm having difficulty finding images of the original show, or comics, but here's one of the G1 Queen Majesty toys.

I have also read that Lauren Faust had a lot of character designs and character names that were rejected, at least in part because apparently Hasbro let the copyrights on some of the original 1980s characters expire but not others. It was originally going to be a reboot of G1 reusing all the original cast.

So I am guessing she and Hasbro went through a number of iterations of character ideas before coming to an agreement, which is not unusual.

I could never get into the neo-Hanna Barbara era (IE, Dexter's Lab)

Edd Ed and Eddy sucked ass.

Old guys remember loving the Transformers when they were kids, but the show just does not play to an adult audience. It was a show about vehicles that turn into giant robots and fight with one another. What little boy is not going to love that? Hell, I still have a certain nostalgia for it even if I cannot stand to watch it anymore.

>>293218

You think that Animaniacs does not hold up? I had always thought that one was rather clever.

Animaniacs and the shows it spawned, Pinky and the Brain and Freakazoid where a golden nugget of awesomeness in an otherwise bland and uninteresting period of cartoons.

Based on the shows you mention, your personal favourites other than animaniacs, you taste really is as >>293231 said it, terminally shit. Consider suicide.

Pinky and the Brain was only good until it moved to Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon was a graveyard for formerly good cartoons. There were other good cartoons in the early nineties, but they played in prime time. Beavis and Butthead was like G4 Ponies: brilliant for two seasons before the creators seemed to forget what made it good in the first place. Subsequent seasons had just enough good episodes to keep people watching, but the magic was gone. Ren and Stimpy followed much the same trajectory. The Simpsons was still funny then, but watching Homer be an idiot got old really quickly.

>Based on the shows you mention

I only mentioned The Transformers and the Animaniacs.

I am pretty sure that Nickelodeon made its own seasons. That was like twenty years ago, though, so my memory may be off.

>until it moved to Nickelodeon

Confirmed for not having any fucking clue as to what you're talking about. Pinky and the Brain went to shit when they brought in Elmyra and Nick never had anything to do with that and just ran reruns, and that Elmyra spinoff was made after the original show ended.

Transformers was extremely effective Sci-fi when it was being good. Ancient robot aliens fighting a secret war on an alien world with strange biological based life is actually very engaging and explains why we have dozens of different versions of it over the years. The movie portrayed an ancient god-like entity transform into a more recognizable form in order to tear apart a planet.

That being said, it is extremely dated, but with a bit of salt on the meal is actually rather filling.

Back on topic, god DAMN did The Perfect Pear fucking knock it out of the park.

"Discordant Harmony" was odd. I have to wonder, how much did it cost to make all of the new animations for that episode? Nearly the entire episode was set in new locations. It is in strange contrast to how little we heard from any voice actor who was not either Delancie or Libman. It was like they spent the episode's budget nearly entirely on Delancie and the animation department.

It turned out alright, anyway. I liked that the entire thing was about a tea party. That was a bit of meta humor there, I suspect. Didn't Larson once say that they would never do a tea party episode? In any case, Discord is starting to develop an actual role on the show, which is nice.

Earth Pony mares giving birth compete for altitude and distance. In Year 972 of the Celestial Era an Earth Pony mare named Pea Shooter squirted a foal over thirty meters, reaching a maximum altitude of twelve meters, winning the gold medal in the 972 Foalympics in Baltimare and setting a world record that still stands.

Lewis and Songco are just fucking good at what they do. There were so many subtle details that it felt bigger than 22 minutes. The only objection I have to that episode was the entwined trees at the end. How would Granny Smith not have seen that before? Apart from that, it was a damn good episode and the only real homerun that the series has had since "Rarity Investigates."

Did anyone else notice what Pear Butter was doing when she distracted Bright Mcintosh? I am honestly surprised that they went there.
