FFmpeg, not sure what version but it's a 64b windows build. Audio set to mono, 8Khz 36Kb/s.
Some FF plugin to get the YT video from YT's clutches, an 720P MP4 file, then downgraded to fit within upload restrictions.
I like good video much better than "good audio" which can't, IMHO, be heard anyway. To each his own, but I know people on both sides exist. Saging for no video tonight.

Simple 2 pass CQ encoding with sensible parameters can do wonders. Just watch and compare. Same video quality, almost the same size, immensly better audio.

imo, if you're on a shoestring budget of bytes, the best way to save space is first to look if the video to be encoded has 30fps or more. If so, you can lower the framerate to 25fps thus buying some space with little to no noticeable effect.

In short, as official webmproject site puts it:

Yes, I know it was encoded with opus, but as you just said yourself, it was rather low quality. While presonally I don't have much against mono, having tested it out vs stereo at the same bitrate I barely could tell any difference, there's a massive improvement from raising the bitrate from 36k to, say 80k. What I was trying to say is, that opus codec reaches transparency audiophiles and experts pls don't kill me for saying this at fairly low bitrates, compared to other codecs. eg. see: http://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=Opus
36kbps is A OK for telephone-quality voice transmit, but not so much for music, which occupies more bandwidth.
And also, 36kbps compared to 80kbps opus (from our respective webms) saved you a 1.3MB, about 50% of audio size, but I'd argue that quality loss was way more than just a 50% drop.

Hmmm. Personally, I haven't noticed any of this happening, though it's another of those subjective qualities about A/V (like the 36kbps mono audio heh heh), and while it may be perfectly acceptable for one person, it might be horrible for the other, so I see where you come from, so I'll give you that. Dunno about the A/V un-sync, maybe if the audio isn't altered but frames are dropped, or sth like that, but otherwise, I kinda doubt it, but again, I'm no expert. also the fps in the original webm source material was ~24fps anyways

well, there's really no obvious way to tell if somebody encoded video via 1-pass or 2-pass, it doesn't leave any metadata, just improves compression ratio, so sorry I've assumed it was only single pass. Our videos have similar sizes (9.4 and 9.2MB respectively), so yeah, in this case you're right, I haven't looked too close, and missed the fact it was 2-pass as well.
