I'm guessing it's built into their DNA after centuries of manipulating humans and having an instinctual knowledge of our behavior engrained into their genes.

the other behavior involves them "stealing our thunder"….

99% of the time, if you see a cat doing something particularly adorable or posed in a peculiar way, and if you say "look at how he's sitting" (or whatever) THE CAT WILL IMMEDIATELY STOP THE BEHAVIOR…

they'll immediately change their pose, or abruptly stop doing the particularly adorable behavior…

the ARE in tune on a MUCH MUCH higher level than we are
