Hatred persists because hatred is hedonic. It's just so much more pleasurable to be hateful than to do the right thing. I don't find hatred pleasurable, but I experimented with it to learn the psychology of it.
And then I betrayed hatred, for I have the self-mastery that those who hate me have not.
