How much of the interest in the occult and esoteric really was there among members of the NSDAP?
Especially with Himmler who even among supporters of National Socialism is seen as a very decisive figure. Considering all the lies and myths surrounding Hitler and the NatSocs in general how much of Himmler's "obsession" with occultism and old gods was true or was it just an interest in old Germanic history that's been misconstrued as some sort of larp.

There was a lot of this kind of thing in the 20's and 30's in central and eastern Europe which always had a deep tradition in esoterism. For example the German expedition to Tibet at least was open to ideas about what would now be called naturopathy. The fact that so much of modern medicine is a defacto jewish legislated intellectual tyranny would have at least opened them to alternative ideas.

I doubt if there's any direct literature that's trustworthy on the OP's question but there's a lot of literature about the intellectual in spiritual ferment that took place in Europe and Russia and even America during the post WWI phase. This book would be a pretty interesting starting point for that line of inquiry.

One person that was working in Germany was Viktor Schauberger who looked at water. He came from it from a more naturalistic perspective, and the Reich wanted him to help. It's true. However there was a lot of subversion. Before the Nazis came to power, the Runic Revival took place in Germany and Austria, Guido Von List, Kummer, Marby, Liebenfels, etc. Look into them.
Now let me elaborate. Von List was the first popular one, and the most prominent but insinuated that he wasn't the first Armanen master. Kummer, Marby, and Liebenfels, among others, followed with their own ideas, building on List's and new ideas. What Flowers/Thorsson named Rune Yoga, came from Kummer's Rune Gymnastics, Marby had similar practices.
There was another Armanen master, his name escapes me now but if you really want to know I can find that for you and post it later? He, like all of them, had his own order, Karl Maria Willigut, Himmler's personal magician was part of this guy's order.
During the NSDAP period occultism had to be authorized, Willigut had a personal problem with Marby and Kummer, because the order that Willigut came from fell into disrepute by the HAO (High Armanen Orden, Von List's group that contained Kummer, Marby, and all the prominent masters among others) for mixing the Armanen system with Kabbalah. The Armanen system was completely Aryan so this was a taboo. Willigut used his SS clout to have Marby and Kummer arrested and interned.
Marby was never part of the party, but he was, like all who practiced Armanenschaft, and Ariosophist. Ariosophy is ethno-religious, so it's not that he was an opponent of NSDAP, he was still a racialist. Kummer was part of the party, and was still interned.
I mention these things because there have been and still are subverters, like Spiesberger and Mercer, who try to use Marby to separate Ariosophy from Armanenschaft and dilute it. Wrongfully so, Marby just wasn't keen on talking about Jews in his books because he considered them insignificant. Kummer had a lot of NSDAP aspects in his work.
So yes, the occult aspect of the NSDAP is true. Unfortunately Himmler happened to choose the subverted branch of Armanenschaft, which probably aided in the fact Germany's defeat.

Go to the original post, and look up the people I named, just not on google obviously. The only real Armanen work available to the public is the older works and their translations, the HAO does not share their work to the public since the late 1940s, and they only write it in German.
Also look up Armanenschaft and another religion Irminenschaft respectively. Avoid Mercer, Gorgani, Spiesburger and anyone from "Knights of the Runes", they're phonies. Some people like Miguel Serrano, I'd personally avoid him. If you want good modern works in English, l recommend Aelfric Avery's work.

There actually wasn't much "occultism" in the NSDAP. Hitler actually banned astrology (and palm reading IIRC) and some forms of esoteric mumbo jumbo like that. The idea that Hitler and the boys was into the occult comes from the early 1920's. Hitler was taking classes in psychology and the teacher he particularly liked was also into occultism, and got Hitler interested and involved in the Thule Society.

However the relationship with this teacher only lasted a couple of years and does not appear to be a big part of his life or beliefs. What most historians seem to agree on is that actually yes, young Hitler did briefly flirt with interest in the occult because a teacher and mentor he admired and looked up to got him into it, but it was sort of a passing phase that Hitler outgrew or lost interest in, and by the time he was Fuhrer he actually banned some occultish stuff. If anything older Hitler in the 30's was maybe even a little embarrassed by his brief occult phase in the early 20's when he was a young man and would never fully fess up to it, though it seems he was into it briefly for a couple years. Most of the rest of it is wild exaggeration for kike authors to sell books.
