In case none of you lads have noticed, we no longer live in a bipolar geopolitical order and the benefits of American troops parked in Germany are now outweighed by the costs. So with Germany being the worst ally it's been in years, the American response is to say, "Fine. You figure out how to defend yourself." 1. We do not need to have any troops in Germany for political or military reasons. Plain and simple out troops have been there since WW2 simply to save Germany money.
2. It is in American interests to watch the EU fail, and withdrawal of US troops from Germany will help encourage it to follow the UK and withdraw from the EU. German cash is about the only thing propping up the EU at this point. US military withdrawal will force the Germans to spend more money on military forces, which will undermine the already unpopular Merkel as well as decrease the available money for the EU. If you think Germany can use American troops stationed in Germany to threaten other countries, you're delusional.
As far as I'm aware the American troops where mainly still kept in Germany for strategic reasons (e.g. the base in Germany served as a pivot for some military operations in the middle east), not to protect Germany from foreign invaders or to enforce German interests on a global scale.
Nowadays there are no hostile powers in immediate proximity to Germany, only allies. So unless the EU breaks up or some huge intercontinental war (i.e. WW3) happens, there isn't that much Germany needs to defend against.

That's just not true. There have been some recent squabbles, but that doesn't change the situation at large. Also keep in mind that these were set off by the US and are not a result of Germany trying to free itself from American influence.
The whole Nord Stream controversy is really just the US aggressively pushing their own interests. Obviously Germany will consider it's own interests and not just do whatever the fuck the US wants it to if it screws itself over by doing so.
In the case of Iran, the US under Trump made a 180° turn compared to the US under Obama for no real reason (by that I mean a substantial change of the facts that would justify it). It's understandable that other countries aren't that happy about throwing an agreement they just reached a couple of years ago to the wind for no reason. And ultimately Germany didn't do anything besides voicing some disagreement, it still goes along with US sanctions.

US bases in Germany are known for higher tier medical facilities. They are probably removing useless security details there since there is no real threat from the populace and they can already go on leave and visit the cities/bars outside their bases on their days off. US soldiers can literally go drinking off base in some middle east countries so any redundant forces there is a formality.
