How does one know when he has become such a unique individual that he appears pretentious?

Yes, It's called Narcissism.

Narcissism-Excessive preoccupation with or admiration of oneself

>>3266

If you think you might appear pretentious, you probably already appear pretentious in some way and can't admit it. There's nothing to say you can't have an individual spin on things, it is in fact encouraged in various areas in Western society(though not certain others). Someone planning to add a flair of individualism should know how to combine that with the expected societal norms in a way that is striking and noticeable but works with the popular opinion rather than directly against it.
