Hegel's big thing is really his conception of science as necessarily a unified complete system of knowledge with nothing outside it. This conception of ontological completeness in some form, the Absolute, is his "idealism": the belief that reality forms a self-contained and self-generated organic unity. This is actually the presupposition of science in general, the belief that the world is rational and we must just discover and conceive how it is so.
