I prefer Calibre because it has a library and more customization. It's a powerhouse of an ebook reader. It's also free and open-source and available on Mac, Windows and Linux.

What program can open .PDB ebooks? Calibre says it can open them but there is always an error with opening PDB. I have tried other programs that claim to open PDB, but none of them work.

I like to use Emacs for everything and DocView is just shit so I use MuPDF for pdfs.

Stay clear of conversion and editing online for PDF and EPUB, for the purpose of privacy. They will log IP addresses and keep the content, which is telling, should the material subject be weapons, chemicals, or ideology.

It can also be used as a general PDF copying/cropping/re-sizing/OCR-ing manipulation tool. It can generate native or bitmapped PDF output, with an optional OCR layer. Re: Alternative ebook formats for portable use.

Since Android is ubiquitous, and there are two competent open-source ebook readers, MuPDF and Book Reader by Axet, and EPUB is by far the most common ebook format thats cross-platform readable, then use Calibre to convert MOBI, AZW to EPUB. And for EPUB distribution here, there is Catbox and Anonfile, which keep the files available longer.

Let's keep a standard of PDF with searchable text and EPUB as the preferred formats.
