Hey PDFS, how do I scan a book properly? What if it's fragile?

Pic completely unrelated

Hoi, unfortunately scanning a book is often equivalent to 'destroy' it, all for the better good of spreading it.

I have scanned a few books for the Gutenberg project, the oldest from 1690, and it isn't easy to 'destroy' a book worth sometimes up to thousand euro, but you must think it is for the collectives best.

If the book is in the interest of the real history, you can always send the book to ie. Gutenberg in your country.

Good luck!

What do you mean with that exactly?

this is nonsense. Just set up your own book "scanning" station. Just use cameras instead of taking the book apart and scanning the page with a conventional scanner. Video related.

Yeah, there's programs like FastScanner that let you use your phone or tablet camera to make pdfs. It looks badly xeroxed into black and white, but I've only used it once or twice and I probably got the settings wrong. But it exists!

also, you there are shops where you can get books scanned. Where I live destructive (meaning binding removed) scanning to PDF/mobi is $10. If you're going to do it, just get a random book scanned first to see what the quality is, and then if it's okay use the service for more important books. Where I live we have places like this, but there are also places that involve mailing if there aren't scan centers where you live.
