Hey /out/. I just turned 18 and have been wanting to do this for awhile now.
I want to go backpacking across the country because I'm itching for adventure and want to step out of both my comfort zone and my monotonous lifestyle. Also because my mother can't support my neet ass and I don't want to get a job at this young age, becoming a wage slave.
Anyway, let's say I have a budget of around 300 dollars. Maybe more, maybe less.
What do I buy? I'm thinking I would just get milsurp shit since they're pretty sturdy, and I'm on a budget. What would you guys recommend?
>Backpack
>Jacket/parka
>Boots
>Knife
>Sleeping bag
>And other must-have supplies
I've done research, but any general tips on backpacking, hitch hiking, train-hopping, and other useful advice to help me on my journey would be appreciated.
ALSO, should I try to group up with another person? I was thinking a gril, since they have tits, thus making it easier to hitch hike. Where would I go about finding other people interested in the same idea?
thx gais.

Find yourself a good road dog that knows what they are doing. You won't last very long just winging it. I promise you. Go to closest urban downtown area, and meet some traveler kids on the street, or there are some good dirty kid groups on Failbook, and places like that.

>wants to travel

>refuses to work
Okay matey, hate to break it to you, but you're going to need some cash if you're going to get anywhere. Getting a job is not synonymous with being a "wage slave", so drop that attitude right fucking quick.

That said, maybe you've saved enough up to do this—

>around 300 dollars…maybe less

You must be joking.
For your bag, shoes tent and/or sleeping bag you're going to burn right through that. So that leaves you with no spare cash for food, transportation and any other necessities you might need. How long are you planning to do this? Do you have a schedule worked out? How are you going to eat? Where are you planning to go?

These are things to think about.

Honestly, this has BAD IDEA written all the fuck over it and if you're just doing this for kicks I'd recommend working to get some cash before you go fucking anywhere, and certainly to do some traveling before you decide to go cross country, because you ain't gonna get across on <$300, I can tell you that. Hell, I'm not even sure how much you're gonna have left after getting your supplies.

Also
>trainhopping
OP please. This isn't the 40s.

Try first go across state before going crazy.
That said, 300$? Not enough unless you are somesortofan hobo king. Or are alot resilient than you sound.

> I don't want to get a job at this young age,

I have been working since i was 16. Go to work, it builds character.

OP here. I knew 300 wasn't enough. I'm still doing odd jobs here and there and donating plasma.
I'm currently at 420 dollars.
Still looking around for gear, that's why I came here.
>>619
You're right. I'll probably need to find a job and save more.

Anyway, recommendations on gear listed above would be great.

Ok. Then.
Buy mil-surplus, that shit is cheap as dirt and usually made to last
>Backpack
Alice might be good, they usually cost around 20$-30$ There are better backpacks, but this is cheap and durable.
>Jacket parka
Again, mil surplus. M65 is again durable and cheap. There are better ones, but value is good. Look around, look for durability and warmth.
>Boots
Can't help here. This is also the most important part. So choose something that can be fixed cheap.
>knife
Whatever. Make certain you know how to fix it, so full tang is preferable. Also, unless you're going to take a hatchet with you, make sure it is a quality knife that can take batoning.
>Sleeping bag
This shit, as with boots are expensive. Again, surplus is way to go, but even that is expensive.
>must have
First aid kit. Mess kit& hobo stove, preferable one that is easy to use with sticks and trash. Blanket. Clothes, sewing kit is a must have. If you're feeling like a badass, get a sling/fishing line so you can kill and eat tiny animals. Tarp/bivvy bag to go with the sleeping bag, rain is a bitch.
Food. Food. Food. Multitool.

420$ aint going to cut it assuming you don't already have alot of shit gathered.
honestly enough, i think this shit is doomed.
Try first walking the entire state around, follow the borders. You learn what you need to do and see how you like it.

Have you ever done anything like this before at all? Because I definitely wouldn't go cross-country if you're a greenhorn with no experience. No amount of 'research' is going to prepare you to be a vagabond, and seeing that you mentioned trainhopping as a viable means of transportation, I have to question whether you have the faintest idea of what you're doing.

Hi op.

Primitive survival skills instructor here.

I highly highly highly discourage this idea. You need a bit more experience (read as a fuckton more) before you tackle anything like this. I hiked across 3 states before, and that was pretty rough going at times and i've been doing this shit for 10 years.

>>644

Like this anon said. OP you cannot just expect to pull up stakes and do something like this. You will die quickly (hopefully) or slowly (unfortunately).

I admire your vision and your dreams, but you're gonna die.

Is the US really like this? Hiking across your own country is actually dangerous?

haha oh wow

Hiking any country is fucking dangerous. Don't matter if you stick to wilderness or urban. I'm fairly sure you're not gonna be able to string together a walk through a state/country and only pass through nice neighborhoods/well maintained woodlands, so you'll meet some pissed of animals, some pissed of gang bangers, some pissed of druggies and some pissed of thieves. Don't claim you're Canadian/British/French/Australian and this shit doesn't happen in your country cause it happens everywhere there are people whether you want to believe it or not

No. No it's not, that is absurd unless you are living in some Mad Max universe.

The biggest reason it's dangerous is because of the vastness of the US. It's not difficult to go long stretches without ever seeing anybody

I live in the suburbs, and I'm scared of my own neighbors being drug producers. Sure as hell would be scared to just up and hike to unknown places.
