while I will not defend the quality of their music, I do believe the main reason is merely a meme itself.

I think the same reason most successful pop act is: over saturation and formulaic. They were kind of throwback and in my experience seemed like their fanbase was older and or female, not a whole lot different from the kind of push back glam rock or boy bands received in the wake of their mainstream success.

I think Train deserved the hate more.

OP, the hate definitely comes from their exposure. I mean, people love shitty songs, but when they hear them too much they hate them (Gangnam Style, Despacito etc.) And Nickelback were everywhere and almost unavoidable. Which just fueled hatred

Because they were one of the most generic rock bands ever. Limp bizkit was unironically better then them, because even though limp bizkit was complete shit, at least they were somewhat unique.

The last big rockband. The hate was influenced by the industry, because they wanted the rock-genre to go away, it had served it purpose and became unuseful.

Same reason there was a major hate for Creed. Christian Rockband, can't have that. Most of the hate started from sitcom-shows and whatever regurgitate the idea of these bands somehow being okay to hate on, if you wanted to be part of the identity-group of rock-fans.

And i say this without being a fan of Nickleback, don't like their music at all except for maybe one or two songs. But they weren't detestable like for example Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys or anything of that kind of shit.

The industry isn't a well oiled machine with a king at the top commanding legions. Creed was fucking big until they devolved into mediocrity. Take that tinfoil hat off.

They were among the most cookie cutter rock bands that came out in the era. If Green Day was Blink 182, Nickelback was Alien Ant Farm.

I've heard for Canadians it's because of their overexposure on the radio due to CANCOM.

I remember getting their album as a birthday present from some of my friends. It has burned in my memory, because it was the first present someone gave me, that I could track it was given to me for being a good friend. I also got LP Meteora and self-titled POD. Can't say my friends had shit taste. I also can't say I enjoyed Nickelback songs though.

Because they're white.
