Hawkwind. Especially the albums they did with Lemmy: Doremi…, Space Ritual, Hall of the Mountain Grill and Warrior on the Edge of Time.

Black Sabbath's first six albums. Particularly Master of Reality is a stoner classic.

You probably at least heard of the above albums. So also check out Orange Goblin's Coupe De Grace because it's badass. Stoner rockers starting to play more punkish tunes.

Stoner Rock has 2 ramifications, you either go for a punk-ish psychedelic rock/heavy psych, or pure stoner metal, which ditches the acid part a little to reach a more sludge metal sound (The Melvins, Sleep, Electric Wizard, Bongzilla, Song of Otis, the mentioned Acid King). I'm going for the former path.

This >>92070 in terms of classic basics, i would include Blue Cheer too, and maybe Iron Butterfly, but there's a controversial statement here:

Orange Goblin's first 3 albums are essential (embed related), while the fourth one, Coupe De Grace, was shunned for its tonal change, i like it but i wouldn't recommend it as a starter. Scott Reeder did the sound engie for it, ironically

If you like Nebula, i would add Fu Manchu [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-rn7i75vhU] and Dozer [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKsij2HBSTU]

If you like the Black Sabbath aspect out of it, sHEAVY is good [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txMYHdgiQ8Q]

If you liked Dozer, their swede rivals are pretty decent: Lowrider [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-gIhUuE1EM], Blind Dog [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTwfuNpMZsk], Truckfighters [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLMPA4xPFpg], Demon Cleaner [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDCjJtY5U1k], and the meet-up band where some of the past bands' members jam, but blues-oriented, Greenleaf [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjCrv4Ed1kE]

What's with Swedes/Nords and the Arizona/Sonora desert?

There's also the dutch with Sungrazer [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAxFEJMbbvw], the french with Glowsun [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S_lcHtpV-Q] and of course the brits with shining Orange Goblin

Monster Magnet is a tough one, their only good card is their first album, the 1991 heavy psych classic. You might like their related act (1992-1998 guitarist's band), The Atomic Bitchwax, which is more oriented to classic hard rock but it's very well worth checking out for the psychedelic undertones once in a while, at least in their first album [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOrv4Cxk1X8].

Some Kyuss members's next bands are pretty decent (let's exclude QotSA for the post's sake), Garcia, other than his own band which i haven't checked well, had the traditional Slo Burn [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoyAO6jjuLc], the hard rock-oriented Unida [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qav2BtZscE] and the punkish Hermano [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CwLkuWIiW8]

Brant Bjork moves in a couple of genres and even bands (also played for Fu Manchu), he's mostly laid-out punk, but some of his stuff is very catchy [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IavC8fmKOzI], although maybe not Stoner at all [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZAaWtnoGNM]. Shame he's a gommie, notable in Che and some song titles.

Then you have the texan Wo Fat, decent but pretty weird lads and they ripped at least one off [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opT1Ll8_syU], the marylander Sixty Watt Shaman [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgeLlQ_bUxE] and now that we are with spanish titles, you have this Argentinian band Los Natas, very good stuff [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ5XNlDs-FE]

I've read a lot that most people who like this path jump to the modern yuro psychedelic rock, i did thanks to a blogger called Stonerobixxx (who i think preferred Doom/Sludge), if you like that path then:

(psychedelic) Colour Haze, Causa Sui, Kamchakta, Siena Root, Rotor, Pharaoh Overlord, Gomer Pyle

(space) My Sleeping Karma, Secret Saucer, 35007, Monkey3, Øresund Space Collective, Litmus, Sula Bassana, Hidria Spacefolk, and fucking Ozric Tentacles are possible prospects

And then you have the whole Desert Rock affair, are they the same thing or a toned-down/prototypical stoner rock? the ones who classify themselves as such are definitely different, and also pretty decent: Yawning Man, the original [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIi2PZCkKX0] and revival (post-2005 and Sons meet-up) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrO49y2UV2I] versions, Across the River [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhBTi2aWexI], Orquesta del Desierto, Brant Bjork in his early solo work and around late 2004-2006, Fatso Jetson [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-VSs9OXZiM], Ten East [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCR_RTrxao4] and Che. More than half of those have a member from the Lalli family.

Bro-tip: Rule says check the first 2 albums, but because i think i exceeded myself i have to say only the first one, as a bunch of these already got their trademark the first time

Pro-tip: Rick Rubin, Chris Goss and Joshua Homme are big time jews

I swear i'm not high, but i fucked the formatting again, here's the previous embed, from the third Orange Goblino album

If you want to go full mainstream, Audioslave played plenty of stuff highly related to stoner rock, but even with the pedalpedo Morello they never went with the psychedelic solos

I will not mention Wolfmother's entire act, but they actually only have one or two songs related to the genre, unlike some say. That particular hard rock plus blues is commonly heard, Josiah and Asteroid pulled it, along with Greenleaf.

Spine Of God isn't MM's first album, it's their first full-length. A lot of people ignore the EP for some reason even though it's on the exact same level, it just doesn't have the epic Spine Of God track or tear jerkers like Zodiac Lung. All the stuff they did with John McBain is cool. Ever check out Hater btw? Not that great imo but might as well post it since I mentioned McBain and we've had discussions about grunge on this board not too long ago. The opening track could have been on MM's later albums, I wonder if it was an inspiration for Space Lord.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4q28xpLqGc

Superjudge comes closest to stoner rock and the title track rules. Best recommendation for people new to MM because for a lot of people the bad production of previous albums is a high threshold.

MM were never "true" stoner rock though, they are space rock and more in a league of their own. But then Acid Bath are even further removed from the stoner rock genre.

Coupe De Grace rules precisely because it breaks the conventions of stoner rock. It's much more interesting to listen to than albums that consist 100% of the same type of groovy stoner riffs.

If we're gonna talk more about classics can't ignore bands like MC5 and early Grand Funk Railroad either. Try GFR's 1970 live album for a starter.

I really don't consider EP's to be albums, mainly because they were really tough to get back in the day, unlike the usual full albums. A nuisance from the past from my part, if we do count them, MM has the 1990 EP and the 35 TAB thingy, which is just droning guitar sounds, very good if you are into that and somewhat captures what did they did live when full drunk, Living Las Vegas EP was very tough to get (it was basically an official bootleg), had Space Lord played in Spine of God fashion, great stuff but never heard it again.

MM can be considered under the modern standards "heavy psych", but i prefer Space Rock like you well said, those new or retaken genre names are very specific at times.

I highly agree with the breaking of conventions, in this case an album filled with 8 songs with the same riff structure, but we have to remember the first 3 (or 4 if we count the split EP) OG productions are classic because they mix plenty of psychedelic passages and build ups.

While they might be predictable at times (album starting with very riff driven songs, album ending with long solo sequences, 3rd and 4th songs are psychedelic ventures) they made everything varied enough to be entertained for 40+ minutes. Same thing Kyuss made from Red Sun to Circus. Hence why people got heated when they heard CdG, even with Garcia and Reeder inside.

I don't recall MC5, will have to check them out.

I heard electric wizard and I can definitely get into that as well. also, i find kyuss' first allbum "wretch" to be a little underrated. It's very mean sounding bluesy rock that's lacking a certain psychedelic quality of their later work but it's good nevertheless.

Why don't you like Monster Magnet anon? I've been on an MM binge recently and they have so many great songs and Dave Wyndorf's lyrics are mostly pure money. If I had to hide one boomer in my basement on Day of the Rope, it would be Dave.

I like Monster Magnet, but in terms of thread related, their only good stuff is Spine of God

They ditched the first guitar guy and went into a more pop (sell-out as Wyndorf said himself) sound, as in more soft guitar sound, drastically shortened the solos/droning and just toned down the psychedelic. Still they had pretty good songs, Superjudge has a bunch of killer riffs (Dinosaur Vacuum) and Dopes to Infinity a very good Hawkwind-esque song (Look to your Orb)

But the full conversion was Powertrip when they became a far-out Nickelback, some stuff here and there but it was mainly vanilla rock with absurdist lyrics, and the best song was not even in the album but on a B-side (Big God) that tried to return to their first efforts while combining that, in my opinion, dull "Vegas Rock" (as Wyndorf also said)

Later on they almost became a joke band akin to GWAR, i still like some songs here and there because they certainly have fun with it and they are kinda catchy (Heads Explode) but they are nowhere near their first album (and EP)

God Says No is still a gem tho, released near Madonna's Music, the editing and feel is very similar and with the band's music going a little more wacky (and still somewhat late 90's pop) it sounds like if Madonna in her, now much revalued, Cowgirl era made a rock album. I like that a lot.

>God Says No is still a gem tho

Have never bothered with any album after that, even though I still thought it's pretty good (esp. Cry, Take It, Silver Future). A solid 6, maybe 7.
