Look at this picture. There are many ways to interpret it. It's a man playing a guitar, sure. But the fact that the guitar is the only thing that isn't blue suggests that it's the only thing that matters in this man's life. He'd be nothing without it.

How do you translate this kind of meaning to music, without resorting to lyrics? You can use chord changes to build and release tension as well as instilling certain emotions, but can you go further? To portray a specific scene, or message?

There are ways to do this with production. For example, in some songs, if the lyrics have a different mood to them at different points of the song (at one point the singer might be singing about feeling angry and then later sing about feeling sad), mixing engineers will put different degrees of reverb on the vocal track to reflect that mood change (less for anger, more for sad, to make the sad part seem more ominous and lonely). There are bound to be many other ways to do it with production, not that I can think of any myself right now.

Things like EQing and reverb can go a long way to expressing that stuff, from the production side. Lofi drums, a reverb on the snare, so on.

The easiest way to pull on heart strings is a technique called "Appoggiatura", which kind of a grace note, I guess? It's too complicated to go into, and I'm lazy, but it's a dissonant note that resolves to consonance. Once you hear an example, you'll hear it in a lot of famous sad songs. Stick it in the chorus.

There's a ton of techniques from all areas of music production that'll do it.

sound effects you dumb faggot who never really listened to music before and probably just wants advice for his shitty bandcamp. Other than that it entirely depends on the listener, you have no control over how they will interpret your creation. That's why visual and aural at the same time is the most powerful. Music sets a mood or enhances a mood, that's it. Other than that it is entirely meaningless.

It's an example. I was going for the concept, not the specific example. Maybe you could make certain parts of a guitar part lo-fi to reflect some kind of change in the notes, or put a ton of echo on a loud part to make it overwhelming.

What's an example of music that vividly paints a picture, anything with 'less is more' philosophy?

Seriously? Have you never listened to a piece of classical music? Even the most pleb of classical music paints a vivid picture. Techniques such as the appoggiatura I mentioned previously in the thread have been almost completely lost to time because too many people are content with wailing on the circle of fifths.

It's not hard to evoke feelings through music alone. The opening of "Black Sabbath" is all you need to hear to know you're hearing something sinister, and it's only a flatted fifth. Augmentation and diminution, static harmonies, phasing and the previously mentioned two are some of the easiest ways to lead a persons mind in a direction.

Get yourself learned, son, go listen to Chopin or Debussy or something.

I understand what you mean now, OP asked such an obvious question that it went over my head thinking he meant something deeper.
