Hey /loomis/, I wanted to ask you about a comment my art teacher made. While teaching us how to build things out of basic shapes and measure the area of our drawings, she said that cartoonists and illustrators don't do any of that because it takes too long. She said they basically just doodle, but well enough that it looks decent. Is that true? She's made a few disparaging comments about cartoonists and illustrators in the past, so I have a feeling she just wanted to take a shot at them.

Illustrators like Kim Jung Girls don't use construction because they visualize the former in their head. Others construct, but they do it briefly and lightly.

Not really.

If you're interested in animation, check out this youtube page.

He uses a constructive method a lot of the time.

This old cartoonists' book teaches construction as well.

It's a fundamental really. I'm sure a lot of cartoonists and illustrators DO draw completely flat but they ignore these kinds of fundamentals at their own peril. Measuring proportions and volumes with care is incredibly important for an animator.

If you get really gud you may be able to do a lot of construction in your head, but for beginner/intermediate artists it's essential.
