What writers capture a good sense of insanity in their prose?
What stories does /lit/ recommend that convey insanity?
Can you remember any passages you liked with characters going or acting utterly mad?

The only one that comes to mind is Lovecraft
His characters start off very rational and methodically and they try and maintain that throughout their journey. But over time they become more stressed and their thinking becomes more frayed. The rational assessment, previously a source of comfort and the best that a human being can do, becomes a source of pain and anxiety as they try and wrap their brains around the implications.

giovanni verga's llibertà.
it's about a rebellion of peasants that killed all the rich people in bronte, sicily during one of our unification wars.
a very short read. barely more than a page,. it follows the massacres and then there's a very good part about the aftermath .
you can find it translated as "freedom" or "liberty" but i must say that the tranlations didn't quite capture the same feel.
to my very limited knowledge one of the best pages in italian literature.

Johnny Got His Gun by Trumbo captures the insanity by writing it like a monologue of the main character, in essence you're experiencing everything of what he has to go through.
However it is a tough read as there is no punctuation and the whole book is one run-on sentence. Dialogs are lost easily and there are times where it's hard to follow through properly the book.

I don't recall ever reading a passage so short that packed so much intensity and historical truths.
The death of the innocent children, the anger of the villagers and brutal revenge taken upon them by the authorities was a tough pill to swallow. The way they use the word liberty is almost as if it's been poisoned and used against the people who it was designed for.
The author is definitely a master of the craft, great read and highly recommend to anyone else.
Great recommendation bro, here's some cool newretro art in return.

You've gotta be more specific than that, are you talking about the characters or the narrator? Are you talking about conveying madness or just depicting it?

I really liked a few snippets. This one here:
>Don Antonio was slipping home by the short cuts. The first blow made him fall with his bleeding face against the causeway.
I love this part. It's sets the tone for the whole riot with just two sentences. Written as terse as possible, the reader is given an immediate demise of one of the gentry. Similarly, the baroness being lifted over the balcony railing and being left exactly at that was a great choice as well.
Another part:
>The first fellow caught him in the shoulder with a hatchet cut. Another was on him with a sickle, and disembowelled him as he was reaching with his bleeding arm for the knocker.
With the quick introduction of this character, we're given an even quicker tragedy. Very well written.
Also, the frequent and strong similes like a famished wolf among sheep or a man's axe felling a boy as if to cut down a mighty tree were excellent too.
It's certainly a masterpiece, being able to fully capture the insanity and brutality of a riot in just a handful of paragraphs. Thanks for sharing this!

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest has some great moments that blur the line between reality and psychotic delusion.
As someone who's spent time in a psych ward being treated for psychosis, those parts feel true to experience. I know it's high school reading list tier, but it's at least there for a reason.

a pickle for the knowing ones, Timothy Dexter. he himself wasn't quite sane, not completely insane, but a little bit. his book is just his thoughts as they came to him.

It would be interesting to have a story where the characters are slowly driven insane by using the power of a cosmic horror. I'm thinking of a combination of some of Lovecraft's stuff and Getter Robo. Especially the New Getter Robo anime.

a lot of surrealist lit tackles this issue, you should look into that.
from the chart i'd definitely recommend maldoror, the whole book consists of vignettes written by a misanthropic madman.
