I imagine finishing LoTR would be a good start. Though, with the movies you only need to read Silmarillion for the shitposting.

This might be a dead thread but does anyone else have a love hate relationship with the Hobbit?
I enjoy reading most of it but I think the barrels sequence took me out of it. Idk it seemed dumb.

I found the barrels scene fine. The Hobbit is a lighthearted fairy-tale children's story at its core.
Did you see the lotr films before reading it? There's a bit of a feedback loop in the cultural consciousness that muddy's the distinct tones of each book imo.

Yeah I've seen the Lotr films and the first two Hobbit ones. Couldn't say I enjoyed the Hobbit ones. Didn't realize how much Jackson butchered it.

Yeah it's not as devolved as Tolkien's other works because I don't think he expected it to be successful enough for a sequel.
