I have published some erotica there and over the course of a few years maybe made twenty bucks.
You have to market yourself.

How?
And how did you only make twenty bucks? How much have you published on there?

Keep a blog, buy out ads, plug your stuff other peoples' blogs, etc. I did some of those. I had a Tumblr, but I mostly posted porn on it to keep people coming. I think that was the sole reason I had any views. Most of my sales were in that period. Every now and then I get a sale. Latest two were because I openly talked about it on halfchan, and another one was when I told a friend about my erotica and she bought one.
I've written three novella-length ebooks and charged between one and three bucks. Amazon takes a small chunk of that, too. Couple that with the fact that I could have marketed myself more aggressively, and the fact that my vanilla porn isn't marketable like BDSM or vampire or gay or dinosaur porn, then you can see why I've only made twenty bucks.

I planned on writing erotica tbh.
http://writersweekly.com/this-weeks-article/how-i-made-10k-last-month-writing-and-selling-erotica-by-anonymous
it just seems you writing only three wasnt enough. consistency is key.
i havent read any of the erotica stories, but i looked through the samples and noticed they were all very simple.
is picrelated good enough do you think? im going to have her find out the guy is a criminal and they get into some trouble and he has to flee, but he takes her with him and the end.
obviously therell be a couple of sex scenes in there.

Heh, I've read that article before. Good advice there but I think it gives a little false hope to people who think they can make a living off this stuff. I actually have a fourth one on the way. I've been chipping away at it. I outlined it and the third one when I got laid off and I've been writing this fourth one in between working freelance at a big company and staying at a friend's house, so it is slow going. I have ideas for plenty of others and do intend to keep at it.
As for your piece, it could use some editing but it's decently-written and the setup is good. I'd go with it.

One more thing.
Where do you get covers from? What site? I can't find anything good tbh.

I am the guy you were talking to, and luckily I'm a graphic designer, so I design my own covers, and get stock photos by signing up for stock photo sights and getting free offers, or getting pieces of art from Deviants online. Also cannibalizing nude models or selfies and hoping I don't get a cease and desist.

Put down your crack pipes, take out your pens an pads, an get ready to take some notes. Allow me to introduce a marketing fairy tail from far, far, away and all that:

You know, quantity first is supposed to refer to the stage before filtering and writing.

1) Write smut
2) bury it in cliche plots. [pirate, vampire, scotsman, CEO's, etc.]
3) repeat 1000 times
4) keep publishing until people find your work based on large number theory.
5) publish your last work, which is just a series of numbers and symbols.
6) Get internet famous.
7) retire as people try to use the last book to decode the others.

Related to this thread topic, does anyone have experience submitting to magazines, or genre compendiums or the like?
Any advice on where to get started there?

I am the top rated self publishing author on Amazon and have pulled in millions? Or, just beer and pretzels scratch. Place your bets.

Find some publication that interests you. Examine a few recent issues, read everything. Write something like that and submit. Submit exactly as they instruct you to do so. As a suggestion, take a look at these guys:

You can read some of their product on their webpage. They're trolling imageboards for submissions. What's not to like?

Considering there are experienced writers on fiverr willing to write a complete ebook for like $20-50, for you to publish as your own, they must know this will earn them more money than publishing the ebook themselves. Also considering there are 4 active people on this /lit/ board at the moment, unfortunately it seems no one gives a damn about books anymore.
I'm not saying don't write. But don't write tripe that's beneath you because you think you'll get rich.
