I'm writing a book about two kids that want to shoot up their school, I have the characters and their internal struggle and issues like that planned out very well. The only thing that I am lacking is that I never touched a gun, and I've never been to a USA high school (where the story is based - I was pulled out of high school because of bullying, was homeschooled since 14).
I am making this thread to BRAINSTORM ideas because if I dare to talk about this with anyone else they'd call the cops on me.

Columbine was actually well planned apart from the awful choice of guns they had. If their bombs had worked they'd had BTFO the entire school. The shooting was just what they were going to do to pick off survivors and then commit sudoku. Seems that all the MK Ultra subjects just copied the backup plan. Speaking of copying, if you actually ended up writing a basic school shooting, it's going to be shit. I advise to just have the school shooters and their motives and personalities be different, but copy the plan of the columbine kids. No one will realize if you go with their original plan, trust me.

Got bullied, got into some fights, eventually became more respected later on, but I still almost never made friends. I have no love lost for compulsory schooling, but all in all, I'd say I always had good and had times. It really wasn't so special.

The muzzle flash is not as spectacular as movies make it put to be, and while these things are loud, there isn't as much of bass as you'd expect (unless you wear mufflers, then they sound much cooler). Whether you can use a specific caliber safely depends on your strength by a good deal. Large handguns and shotguns in particular require some experience or a fair amount of strength to handle, especially if they're light, as that means the gun is kicked back faster. A scrawny guy can break his nose firing a shotgun, but usually only if he doesn't respect it properly. If he does, then he might still have some bruises the next day, like after a martial arts class.

Pretty standard. I had a small group of close friends. We weren't the cool kids or anything, but I felt like I was on good terms with most of the people in my year level.

I wasn't bullied in high school, but I did see a lot of bullying, took part in some, and thought about it often.
In my experience, the kids who were bullied were the awkward ones and the ones who didn't really fit in. There was nothing wrong with being awkward, as some of the most awkward kids at school didnt get bullied at all, but all the kids that did get bullied were awkward.
There's a whole set of behaviours you have to adhere to at high school. Its like unspoken rules. The kids who got bullied couldn't pick up on the rules. The behaved differently and unwittingly separated themselves from the pack.
At my school, it was rare for someone to go out of their way to bully somebody else. In my experience, the bullied student desperately wanted to be friends with their bullies, and would go to great lengths to try and be accepted by them. Because of the awkwardness of these attempts, they were mocked by the bullies. Each incident of bullying usually came as a consequence of the bullied person trying and failing to enter the social circle of the bully.
These are two real life examples that happened at my school.
1- James
James was an extremely awkward social outcast. Nobody particularly liked him, but nobody went out of their way to put him down. One day, he anonymously emailed a message to the entire school email group. Each student had a student email that you used for homework and assignments, it was generally used for announcement and important shit. Group emails were forwarded to everyone they included. His message, to all students in the school, was something along the lines of: "You've just been hoodwinked by the sylver fox!" and had a picture of his fursona winking; a silver fox.
He came to school the next day giddy with excitement, eager to talk with all his newfound friends about his epic prank. The whole school was pretty pissed that they had been woken up in the middle of the night for some gay fox picture. As soon as the school found out it was him, his school email was bombarded with gore and porn for the next 3 months.
2. Mike
Mike was a somewhat popular kid, who snitched on his friends that were drinking alcohol to the teachers. From that point on, Mike was referred to as the golden snitch for his golden tan, rotundness, and diminutive stature. Mike was quickly expelled from his group of friends, and the whole school referred to him as the golden snitch. Mike tried to join my group next lunchtime by sitting at our table. His lunch was kicked away, we threw his pencil-case in the fountain, and tried to get him in as well. He didn't sit with us again.
The thing I want to stress about both Mike and James is that they both wouldn't have been bullied if they had been quiet and unassuming. There were weirder, uglier, more awkward kids than them who didnt get bullied at all because they stayed quiet and didn't interact with anyone.
It sounds horrible because it is.

A couple of the seniors a few years before me pulled the fire alarm on the last day of school and soaked everyone with water pistols as they came to the evacuation area. It would probably be effective, since everyone was in one place on the oval with almost no cover.
I think you're putting too much focus on the actual shooting OP. The mindset and experiences of your characters will be more important to the story than their actual plan and execution.

Depends on the gun. .38 is pretty accurate and fun to shoot, my roommate has a 1911 and a revolver that are super accurate. I prefer the firepower of a .45 but it takes a lot more practice to get the hang of, especially when you're retarded like me and have a 3.3 inch barrel.

AK-47 is a shit ton of fun. Ammo is dirt cheap so you can shoot for days. Even though the round is larger than the AR-15's .226, I don't remember it bothering me as much. 9/10

My High School experience was fine, I was quiet but nobody messed with me bc I was wrestling team cap(5th in the state boi). Would recommend taking out any big athletes first as a strategy, because they're the ones that might truck you and ruin your school shooting venture. My school was in a nice area so you could just throw something in your backpack and start blasting whenever. lol.
