Pretty much. It was a range - the more Christian-influenced sects tended towards extreme edenist utopianism ("abandon all material posessions and get back to the land"), while proudhon, or the Rochdale group, or the Owenites tended towards business economics by mutual consensus…

Similarly, it's open and historical fact that Lenin only entered Russia several months after the Socialist Revolutionary party won the civil war, and the vote… and only to attack it.
It caused a bit of damage along the way; Kropotkin's ever-famous "bread book" is basically an obvious attempt to goad Marx into this kind of disturbing, all-consuming codependence without the hallmark of his demans, which were later rephrased by Mussolini I believe as "nothing outside the state." (Which is also what makes it NazCap; it has a CEO and a working class). Lenin turning this shit into something with financing… did not help, and these wreckers are still running around /left(y)pol/ discussing how workers self-management is "bourgeoise" and "private property." Literally. Communism, conversely, is simply applying free-market theory to Locke's "conservation of matter, man, and wealth is created by change in form!" property theory; "free replicator-button," basically… (or open manufacturing).
To date, Proudhon-esque socialist movements are the economic powerhouse, comprising about 10% of the world's largest banks, a sizeable chunk of the housing and insurance markets, the world's largest investment house, and various and sundry other matters. Edenist-style movements appear to be very little of the economic powerhouse of modern socialism; "abandon all posessions" apparently encourages little. Freecycling (the gift economy comes from these guys) captures a sizeable amount of the market, though, and I suspect a lot of rural farming and nature photographers are signifigantly affected by the "drop out and grow vegetables/get back to nature" bits, so it might actually be generating millions to billions in economic activity, ironically. Maybe even more. Arctic indigenous socialism is sort of in-between, but leaning towards the "proudhonesque" wing in recent times, making the US civil war a socialism-versus-bosses-and-workers battle, and the pirate democracies displayed a working socialist military under this model.

It sometimes helps to remember the "wings" in the french revolution; vertical rulers on the right, the people on the left. Proudhon-esque wings of socialism are a bit to the left of classical liberalism, which is WAY to the left of late-stage "capitalism." Edenist wings like the beghards and the diggers… they're to the left of reality, but awesome. Stalinism… is to the right of Hitler. That's not terribly socialist; looking up the details of the Rochdale cooperatives or building societies (or even a barn-raising) would be a bit closer to on-point.
