I can explain the situation in so far as the fact that people are starving, riots are bursting in the streets and one nation with plentiful resources ultimately has very little in the way of prosperity.

Also it's disingenuous to say that we can't explain the situation from an economic point of view, as there's tons of explanations as to how policies made under Chavez and Maduro have made a bad situation in Venenzuela already worse. Here we have what used to be one of the richest oil nations in the world, which just seemingly kept booming and booming in the 70s now turned into a hellhole in which toilet paper is a luxury. The reason for this transformation is fairly obvious to anyone with an IQ above temperature level, although one could go into detail about it.

If your subjective goal in regards to socialism is to starve the entire population and have them eating out of trashcans to survive then on that front Venenzuela is fucking great, but if you wanted a functioning society in which people have food to eat, stable jobs and a stable growth of living standards well then that's a whole other story..
