Kinda on a side topic but somewhat related to the intellectual development of a nation. I think it was in Basic Economics where Sowell mentions that in impoverished nations, those kids that become the first of their family to go on to college generally end up choosing liberal arts degrees over STEM degrees, as it is easier and generally more economically feasible for them to do so. This also has the effect of keeping a diminished intellectual demographic within the population. And for those that do go on to get STEM degrees, they generally emigrate for the increased wages in western countries.
