Iconoclasts (2018) clear!

I'll admit I wasn't really following the development of this, but I do remember playing Konjak's Ivory Springs concept way back in middle school. For a platformer, it's a rather heavy on the puzzle rooms. Still retains those trademark konjak bosses and spritework.

Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut (2013) clear!

A true backlog clogger. I started Deadly Premonition years ago when it was released on PC, but was paralyzed by the array of time sensitive side-quests. Having beaten it, the focus really narrows after the second "Episode", so it was never as daunting as it appeared.

Now I want to see an American developed tribute to rural Japan.

Timespinner (2018) clear.

Leaving aside the obvious "inspirations", this game reminded me of Black Sigil. It's a slavishly faithful tribute game that nails the artstyle (and music in Timespinner's case), but is so otherwise unremarkable you might as well replay the source material instead. Outsourcing the writing to Jacobin aspirants doesn't help either.

Well, it's a replay, but I had to learn most of the puzzles again.

I need to find a new method of getting screenshots off a PS3, pulling up XMB every time brings too many games to a halt.

7th Dragon 2020-II (2013) clear!

Guess it figures this was even more of a copy-paste job than VFD, at least Yuzo Koshiro put in some good tracks. Even the vocaloid version of the standard battle theme is great.

I felt compelled to not reuse my first pick classes from 2020, and ended up with a rather boring burst damage party. Game balance was still pretty tight, though, I wonder what happened after that…

Mega Man Legends (1997) clear!

I can how it earned faithful fans, despite any flaws. Is there a compiled list of official Blue Sky Gaming anywhere?

The action parts really reminded me of a solo dungeon crawler. I especially liked the largely optional interconnected ruins right under the town. Surprised there hasn't been an indie game aiming replicate this on a larger scale.

Natural Doctrine (2014) clear!

Enjoyable take on D&D and X-Com, a future Goblin Slayer game should build on this. Felt like it could have used more fleshing out, there are many discarded lore and plot threads. Had some hilariously blatant Zerg riffs in the "Gorian" theme.

20th Anniversary release.

I made a failed attempt at this back when it topped the best games list at Action Button, and then it actually turned out way shorter than I was expecting.

Another case where I have the original sitting on a shelf practically unplayed. No major changes between the original and the rerelease this time, though.

I always enjoy good context-sensitive BGM.

Compared to Odin Sphere, Muramasa felt kind of samey outside of boss fights since both characters have the exact same playstyle. I guess playing the DLC will help with this.

From all the Zelda comparisons I'd seen, I really wasn't expecting a further simplified WWA-style RPG. There must be an actual name for this subgenre.

It's a charming game, so I fear all that simplification rendered things a bit below standards for a modern remake. Maybe on mobile.

Much bleaker world than Ayesha, it went from living among nature-reclaimed ruins of a higher civilization to desolate plains with what little remains withering away.

It was really simple to craft ultimate equips and complete all the events on my first run, but then Escha & Logy makes you run it again with the other MC regardless.

Not as dismal as I'd heard, but apparently the Plus version fleshes things out. A cute busty tomboy MC doesn't hurt either.

My main gripe is that they give you unlimited game time to complete everything, but you need do the second "route" on a new game. Just be practical and let the player switch characters on demand.

Also, I might be missing something, but is Ayesha the only game where there's a status tab to view your accumulated equipment bonuses? That was handy.

Escha has more and varied alternate costumes than the main duo for some reason…

Landstalker (1993) clear!

Took a long break in the middle of this one. They did a good job making the dungeons feel circuitous and sprawling. For an older game, the weird perspective and platforming puzzles are fives times as frustrating as any of the combat.

I noticed the localization is much punchier than it's contemporary, LttP, not sure if that's 90's Sega of America attitude or not.

La-Mulana EX (2014) clear!

Never in the 13 years since starting the original have I gotten farther than Viy before losing the thread of progress. You'd need a database or index card system to track and reference all the hints in a legit fashion.

The knife is so uselessly stubby in the remake…

Short, but you can tell a talented group made this one. Didn't know you could swim/fly until the third stage. I liked how all the "enemies" are unique and almost entirely harmless.

Outside of poison damage now being super fatal, the changes made it easier overall.

Shortly after starting, I discovered that PC version 1.00 doesn't run on Windows 10 anymore. Not worth installing Steam.

Well 2020 as a better evolution of 7th Dragon than this…

I was hoping the React skills would make an appearance, since you're very limited for actions per turn, alas.

Trillion: God of Destruction (2015) clear!

50 hours of game built off of one menu screen and one boss fight, woo! Really should have used some of that Disgaea influence to add some interesting subsystems to the grinding.

Felt a lot like No More Heroes, except you'd have to really button mash to perform finisher attacks occasionally. I could actually adjust the sound levels to listen to the music this time around, and it ain't bad!

Belated props to Shadows of the Damned for not having one of those building-sized giant final boss fights.

I'll remember this game by the day spent playing it at work when the power cut out. The premature character route endings killed much of the dramatic momentum to the main conspiracy thriller plot.

Well, it's stylish. I think there was something in there about "He who fights monsters" among all the explicit symbolism and dropped plot threads.

Combat is on this strange threshold where combos and parries are simple enough, but I'll whiff every so often and feel like a button mashing scrub. DLC level reminds me of The Dark Spire.
