What have you been playing recently?

The last thing I played was DS, it was my fifth and last time completing it. It's a good game, but I don't wanna play it so much that I get sick of it.

I've been playing Dark Souls in anticipation for the new one. I've sunk over 1,500 hours into this series, and my hype is reaching critical levels. Thought I'd mention it here, halfchan's /v/ and /vg/ have god-awful Souls communities.

When I first saw a commercial for Bully way back when on Adult Swim I thought it looked like a really lame game. I consistently hear people celebrate it on the chans though so now I feel it's a must-play. Who knows, maybe a chunk of it was that the latent /kind/ spirit in me didn't want to embrace anything under a bully label.

Sort of vidya-related I've been having a real good time reading the Pokémon Adventures manga. I got the whole series of 14 volumes for something like $60, probably some of the best money I've spent. I mean it has it's flaws definitely but it has a ton of fun with the source material and what seems like a questionable story element often redeems itself in a cool way. I wanna go back and play the old second generation games now but it wouldn't be possible for me to trade (like, in the unlikely event I had a pal to trade with) or get the time working right if I emulated on my flash cart and finding a working cartridge would be more of a hassle than it's worth. Nintendo will probably release them digitally but I'll bet they gimp the letter function to that nonsense they have going now because they need to let bullies ruin things before they can even lift a finger.

So there's my lengthy blog post for you.

Jesus Christ, man. Is it that good? I've been looking to get into the souls games but what little I've seen of them seems to show they took the japanese approach to lore, ie. disjointed and self-contradictory snippets with no actual thought behind the story.

So is it just a good-looking fighter with good atmos or is there an actual story behind it?

I think I know exactly what you mean. Certain, if not most of the Final Fantasy titles are this, right? They take the hands-off approach to storytelling, leaving much of the really juicy bits for the player's imagination to fill in. However, they do this out of laziness, and it shows. The characters are shallow, and the story has a bunch of gaping holes in it that leave story nerds feeling very unsatisfied.

I am a biased as fuck Dank Sauce fanboy, so take this with a grain of salt, but Dks1's story is not self-contradictory or lazy. But it is a lot of work to figure out on your own. The devs actually encourage guide-reading, and talking with others to collaborate in figuring out both gameplay and lore subjects. They say this harkens back to the old days, when games had real secrets and you would explore them together via forums and chat rooms. So if that sounds terrible to you (not judging, it's a matter of taste) then you won't like it much. But I suggest giving it a pirate anyway.

Demon's Souls is a mystery to me because no ps3. So is BloBo. I still don't understand why no PC release. It's like they hate making disgusting amounts of money.

Dank Sauce 2 swings and misses at nearly all the points that made the first one great. But it's servicable, and the PVP is more fun no thanks to the increased artificial input delay. You will not like this one.

I'm currently playing 999 on a DS emulator.

This will be my third attempt in playing the game to full completion. It's not that hard of a game, so far. It's more or less whether or not I have the time to play that eventually gets me to stop playing.

Here's hoping I can actually finish it.

Well, the game itself is basically a visual novel with a bunch of puzzles thrown into it. A key element, lack of a better word, is the use of "digital roots" which the game does very well to explain to you.

The story itself; however, has a very ominous tone. I won't spoil anything, but I'm actually very scared on how my decisions will effect the rest of the characters.

Music is good. I think I'll get the soundtrack when I'm finished with the game

I currently have progressed farther in one day and have entered storyline territory that I haven't been in before.

Also, the game seems to run well despite being played on an emulator.

Yeah it's pretty good, although I found myself a bit overwhelmed by the size of the world. I was getting lost quite a bit although I think that's just me. I haven't finished it and I can't remember what part of the game I'm at but the best parts are when you're fighting creatures much bigger than yourself and you're clambering around them. Oh, and it can feel a bit button-mashy sometimes but that's usually when you're fighting smaller enemies.

Niche interest I suppose. The closest I've seen to a good pirate sim is Assassin's Creed IV, but the AC series can be pretty boring.

I'd started Tri-Force Heroes feeling like I had wasted my money. I mean the single player option is tedious bullcrap, multiplayer seems inherently flawed by the lacking communication options and stupid players, crappy matchmaking (oh Nintendo…) and the icing on the cake being reused npcs from A Link Between Worlds in the hub world. Getting to the second or third world though you can expect your partners to be a little more competent and the things they throw at you for level design and bosses are pretty neat and it feels good to be using your teamwork. If you like Zelda I guess I'd recommend it though I haven't finished it.

theres a handful of games that i like to pop in to when i cant figure out what i want to do, when i just want to kill time before something else or even just because theyre good and i feel like playing them.

maybe youre looking for something like these. although this post is 16 months old so hopefully youve figured it out by now. but it gets the gears turning and gives me an idea of something else to post.

crypt of the necrodancer is a rhythm game merged with roguelike elements and a pretty awesome soundtrack as you would hope from a game like this. even the shopkeeper sings along to the music which is sometimes annoying and sometimes awesome. everything is done with the arrow keys, you use items and spells with combination presses. i wonder if anyone has played it with a dance pad

one way heroics is largely a roguelike from a different perspective. instead of finding stairs youre constantly walking to the right because the left side of the screen is being annihilated and youll die if you touch it encountering friend and foe along the way. youre also periodically harassed by the boss, and various hit squads. there are several victory conditions, of course defeating the boss is one of them.

if you like games where you have to make the best of what you have on hand instead of just upgrading to the best gear and forgetting about everything else this might be up your alley because some of the biggest aspects of the game are item conservation and inventory management.

sure that axe is leagues stronger than what you have but you dont know its durability and it weighs a ton. but you could create your character to have a higher weight limit if thats your style.

the soundtrack is also fantastic. various and wonderful scores by people who make royalty free music for indie games. sometimes you might just want to take a break and listen.

spelunky is again inspired by roguelikes. are you tired of hearing this yet?

you descend a cave system and try not to die. resource conservation is again paramount as is thinking ahead. bombs and ropes arent always plentiful(but sometimes they definitely are), and you might consider health a resource too. you can only carry one thing in your hands at a time, whether its a damsel in distress, a treasure, a rock youre carrying to throw at traps and trigger them safely or a shotgun.

you will wince and feel silly every time you take damage, health is super hard to come by. some people prefer to zip through as fast as possible, or rob the shops which is extremely dangerous, but rewarding.

theres a freeware version and a retail game. some people dislike the retail game and it does feel a little different in some ways but nothing i can recall seems like a huge deal. in the freeware one i think you can drop unlit bombs to trigger traps. however, the retail one has a bunch more content.

super house of dead ninjas is another platforming game about descending, however you really have to haul ass in this one because you have a short timer that you need to constantly collect powerups for to refresh.

it feels like an arcade game, you select a weapon, bomb, projectile and ninja magic and then youre thrown in to non stop action until you win or die. theres plenty of unlockables to keep you busy.

infested planet is an rts or maybe an rtt where you fight through countless aliens. you have a small team of space marines who for the most part control like your typical rts dudes. you can command them to build structures or upgrade them to different units/weapons.

you dont 'spend' resources in the traditional fashion. its more like you have a maximum amount of value you can have on the field and you can freely recycle things as you see fit.

you increase this limit by capturing points on the map, but this also powers up the aliens who gain or change a mutation. its all a big balancing act where youre constantly swapping weapons and techs around to try to stay a step ahead of their mutations.

theres a story campaign, random maps, and a 'conquer the territories' mode.

I recently beat Witcher 3. One of the best games I've played in ages, and ending of the final DLC made me tear up a bit too.

I'm not him, but I agree with what he said.

>How is the combat in that game

Very different from what you're used to if you haven't played ArmA games before. It's an extremely tactical, slow paced, team work oriented kind of game. To start with, you will need to use every last key on the keyboard (plus a few key combinations). Singleplayer showcases and campaigns are very fun and you will spend dozens of hours with them to get grip of the game. Multiplayer is mostly co-op. The terrain is just fuck huge so you will HAVE to listen and stay close to your team mates. The shooting itself is beyond the scope of what "long range" means to Battlefield et cetera. In most engagements, you will find yourself and your team mates on a mountain, shooting at a group of enemies on another. At times you will take aim and fire a bullet at time, watching them fly over the valley and making adjustments after each shot. At others, you will just lay down suppressive fire as you wait for player controlled mortars, bombers or missile artillery, whichever support you called HQ for. It's that kind of game. Have you ever watched Afghanistan combat videos? You know, when they mount a GoPro camera on a US soldier's helmet and upload the recordings to LiveLeak? I think ArmA 3 developers can be proud to be able to say "yeah, that's what our game looks like!.

>Are the servers populated?

Fairly. There always are some 3 servers with 64 players on them, 5 or so servers with 20 to 40 players on them, and then the hundreds of those empty servers with 0 to 3 players on them. I recommend 7th Cavalry servers, all players are communicative and mature, moderators are very present and above all they're a very tacticool type of server.

>I've been looking for decent game focusing on combined arms lately, but there aren't that many.

There's no other game better than ArmA 3 at that. There also is ArmA 2 but its servers are desolated, you'd have to join a community or "clan" for multiplayer to be viable.

I bought a flashcart and have been playing through some NES games from my childhood.

I hope you're having fun with them anon. I tried playing some DOS games I played in my childhood, but most of them seem harder than I remember them to be.

I've also been playing some FTL, it's quite hard, or at least I find it hard. I'm enjoying it though, the only thing that is a bit annoying is when others teleport on your ship, it can get really stressful dealing with everything at the same time.

It cost a lot of money, but it's worth it for me to be able to play just about every game on the console the old-fashioned way. I'm actually considering selling most off my NES game collection off to help fund some for other systems. It's not like I spend much on games nowadays anyway, and it's pretty much a one-time thing.

As far as DOS games go, I still really like Castles II and WarCraft. The latter is really dated gameplay-wise, but I still love it. I wish games like these would get modern ports like the ones OpenRA guys are doing.
