US Combat Ship Collides With Canadian Freighter In Montreal

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-06-25/us-combat-ship-collides-canadian-freighter-montreal-0

http://archive.is/GwPrc

>An advanced U.S. Navy combat ship that is slated to be commissioned as the U.S.S. Billings collided with a berthed freighter in Montreal on Monday, FreightWaves reported. Both ships were damaged as a result, but their crews were safe. The U.S. Freedom-class littoral combat ship hit the M/V Rosaire A. Desgagnes at about 2PM on Monday, according to Lt. Cmdr. Courtney Hillson, a Navy spokesperson.

>The Billings is 378 feet long and sustained damage below the waterline as a result. The damage to the 452 foot dry bulk vessel it collided with has not been fully assessed yet. The bulk vessel is owned by Quebec-based Transport Desgagnés.

>The U.S. Navy is reportedly still investigating the incident and despite the fact that the Billings was "capable" of making it to its Florida homebase, it is being kept in Montreal for additional damage assessments.

>Hillson said: “The Navy is conducting an investigation to understand what happened and why. We will incorporate lessons learned to ensure we conduct safe and effective operations.”

>The Billings launched in 2017 and is one of the newest ships in the Navy's fleet. It cost $362 million and is billed as a "high-tech, cost-effective surface warfare vessel suited for modern defense needs". Freedom class combat boats like the Billings have "been plagued by a host of issues, which have kept them from going operational."

>The Rosarie was delivered in 2007 and built by Volharding Shipyards in the Netherlands, in collaboration with Jiangzhou Shipyard in China. It has a capacity of about 16,000 cubic meters.

So what is it /k/, is it a Chino-Canadian conspiracy or another case American diversity hire incompetence?

New speak to say that the USN hasn't capable of fielding a half decent glorified corvette in a fucking decade.

When Russia has better ships than you, you should be long past the point of worrying.

Did you know the next one on the line LCS-17 is finally fitted for a radar!

And it's a 360° AESA too, a first in the USN (you know the tech the nips have on their ships since 1990)…

Well the USN still had to buy it to Germany but for them it's still an achievement.

Reminder that sea collisions are never an accident unless the weather is absolutely horrible, and by horrible I mean 10 beaufort minimum. Small vessels - (anything in the military smaller than an aircraft carrier) are maneuverable and impossible to collide with another ship unless they do it intentionally.

It is even more ridiculous when the navy somehow collides with merchant vessels - fuckhuge 300+ meter long slow ships.

I think most of the time it's military arrogance, they think they have right of way over cilivian ships because military and they collide with other nations military ships by playing chicken.

If fighter pilots did this and risked only their life and a $100m plane they would be grounded the same day yet captains constantly risk hundreds of lives and billions of dollars and nothing comes of it.

Aviation is more visible. You have ATC watching everything as sharply as they can specifically to avoid collisions, and moreover because collisions in the air are so much more dangerous (how many of these freighters have sunk? Airborne collisions are 99.9% fatal), near-misses are much more likely to get attention.

Besides, nobody cares about boats. Planes are more interesting. And cargo planes are basically indistinguishable from passenger ones, while ugly rusty cargo ships are very different from pretty cruise liners, so nearly hitting a cargo ship doesn't matter, while nearly hitting any kind of plane is a big deal.

I'd also imagine there are more captains willing to risk it than pilots, too, so the few pilots who actually do pull stunts like that get no sympathy from anyone over their suicidal retardation. Again, a ship collision is quite safe (for the bridge, at least) while a plane collision will almost certainly kill the pilot. Additionally, there are more people involved in the decision to turn a ship. A pilot makes the decision and implements it on his own, or some ATC notices and would never hesitate to issue directions the pilot has no reason not to follow. In a ship the captain makes a decision, and numerous people are involved in implementing it, and he has a crew of hundreds he has to "save face" in front of by not being too acquiescent. It's also a faster, snappier decision to turn a plane than a ship, with no times for games once you realize you're on a collision course.

>What's the biggest cannon one could reasonably fit on a monitor Zeppelin?

Do you mean fit on it as in 'that a zeppelin could technically carry'? Or as in 'that could be fired from a zeppelin without sending the airship spiraling all over the place'?

Let's start with an airship equivalent to the Hindenburg as our base vehicle (no thermite pain or anything like that this time though). That gives us around 10'000kg of payload to work with, which doesn't seem to give us much room for any of the 'superguns' I can find. Even the larger naval cannons would be too much if it has to carry ammunition and fuel, crew, etc. You might be able to fit an AS90/PzH 2000 equivalent with all the kit you'd need to fire it though.

If you went with an An-225 Mriya you'd have the weight to carry something more substantial, either a WWI tier big gun or a small battery of smaller pieces hooked up to the same trigger.

The point is that they look very different, so people perceive them as being different, whereas planes look the same, so people perceive them as being the same. Yes, there's a lot of money at stake, but how many people see the headline that a tanker got hit and have anything more than the mildest possible reaction? Nobody cares since it was just a cargo ship. But if a plane nearly gets hit, regardless of what it's carrying, people get worked up because it could just as easily have been a passenger jet. That difference of perception applies to the higher-ups too. Money isn't a big deal if you're not paying for it (or not directly paying), but if you get someone killed people start caring.

I don't know a lot about Naval ships. I thought there was a separate helmsman who the commanding officer gave instructions to, not to mention things like navigators (especially in shallower waters where you need to worry about where it's safe to go). In any event it's not about the difficulty, it's about ordering the crew to be the ones to back down in a unilateral game of chicken.

Regarding cargo ships, the crew knows absolutely nothing of what happens on the bridge, where there's one officer and maybe one seaman and the captain whenever he feels like it. Ships today can be commanded by one person during navigation: there's an autopilot which keeps the ship on due course, and the ECDIS which keeps track of all objects around it and alerts the bridge crew when a collision course is detected. The commanding officer is a glorified office worker while at sea.

I got it. We stick a giant chainsaw on the bow of the ship. That way, you can ram and wreck stuff better, demoralize the enemy with your giant ship chainsaw, and look ridiculous cool at the same time.

Of course, you want the chainsaw to be effective. Therefore we need the teeth to be diamond-tipped for better cutting, and to use a proprietary energy source that i'll come up with later.

I'll take that paycheck now.

This is the transcript of a radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10-10-95.

>Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

>Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

>Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

>Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

>Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that YOU change your course 15 degrees north, that's one five degrees north, or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.

>Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

Would cargo ships converted to suicide drones filled with explosives be the most effective anti-ship weapon against the Burger Empire Navy in CY+4?

Bonus if they're crewed and registered as mostly legit somewhere, have small spotter drone aircraft and a fast escape boat for the crew after they plot the ship's final course.

US SIGINT has gotten so embarassingly poor the suicide ship's crew could probably even fake disturbed radio calls from their remote command escape vehicle via encrypted tethering and still get away with it.

Blair's claim is a little dubious given that PAL has never used eight-digit codes, and nobody else remembers the alleged "all zeroes" line in the manual. He also claims that the codes were fixed in 1977.

As for the rest:

>The article fails to state that the entire nuclear system was upgraded to PAL only in the 90s,

The last bomb PAL was installed in 1986. Most of the late missiles were Minuteman IIIs, which used a predecessor to PAL.

>and it was until 2003 that the codes were changed - or so the government claims

The government denies that it ever happened.

>Besides there's NO LOCKOUT protocol, so the attacker can simply enter codes all day until he hits the right one

You get three tries, after which point the PAL destroys the detonator.

>And again the lockout can always be electrically bypassed

Only if you can build your own exploding-bridgewire detonators, because the detonator's electronics are all in the same tamper-proof housing as the PAL.

The most complex part of a Minuteman-III G, it's flight computer, is simpler and less advanced than a Super NES. They made an incredible feat of technology when in 2008 they added something bleeding edge called Random Access Memory instead of it's magnetic tape memory.

I have very strong doubts you can't easily bypass PAL…

It's a bit more modern has they had to change it completely in 2000. Because the Year 2000 bug was gonna trash all of US warhead as there was a date component to the auth chips that considered "00" for the year as null and therefore as an error.

>so what?

People think that military technology especially nukes are some incredibly advanced tech, when in reality it's commercial grade tech, slightly customized, that take 10 to 20 years to get adopted through an insane red tape net and stay in service for 30 (when it's not 60).

Meanwhile computer tech from 1980 to 2010 basically doubled in capacity and complexity every 9 months rendering technical security failsafe obsolete at an insane pace, because it's considerably easier to trick old systems with newer ones.

So if you have physical access to the warhead chances are high that if you know what you're doing, you can bypass PAL.

Best security on sensitive material will always be a guy with a gun that know who is allowed to access and who isn't.

PAL is silly on the first place. The idea that you would let politicians dictate the course of wars is ludicrous, I can't imagine a scenario where the military wouldn't have the last word on deploying or not nuclear weapons.

He should've just suck to deleting muttspammer's posts, the board was fine when every new reply wasn't "mut mutt mutt mutt mutt mutt".

Seriously what the fuck are you doing gyro?

Stop mass deleting shit with no explanation whatsoever

What's the last decent thread this board has had?

/k/ looks more and more like /b/ with guns than anything.

>leaf derailed an entire thread by himself and (if I remember correctly) turned it into a racial statistics thread

>accidentally I deleted all his posts instead of only the ones in that thread

>dumb hohol who only ever posts when it comes to bitching about moderation, finds an excuse to stir up shit again

As for the "mass deleting shit", I don't. The only things that get deleted are derailments and garbage 0 effort threads that belong either in the QTDDTOT or cuckchan.

Also look at this and tell me that it is a good thread that should stay in the catalog.

Gyro, what percentage of shitposters are Canadian? Don't be discouraged from maintaining board quality, these fags are just the halfchan transplants from earlier this year

Nowadays it's mostly been american IPs, meaning that the rarer flags in the past few months rather than fucking off have started using VPNs instead. The leaf also has a pretty abhorrent post history and was also the one who made the cuckchan thread in >>684222

Spergkike is still around but has cooled his autism by a wide margin, though some times I still get a few glimpses of muttposting in threads, usually by him.

The biggest issue right now are the shit threads that appear daily.

Thank you for your service, I fully approve of cuckchanners being shat down upon. If it weren't for you the board quality would be nu-/pol/ tier

Silence syrupnigger, you have no defenses left. Canadians are a blight upon the face of /k/, and it has been a long time coming for the medicated cream to be applied, the cream of ass raping. Throughout time without exception every leaf post I have had the displeasure of reading has been utterly insufferable in its retardation with reddit characteristics, providing nothing to the given thread but derailment and innumerable awe struck (you)s gawking at the magnitude of the faggotry. The leaf is a man who enters a party, reaches into his pants and pulls out a turtlehead of shit to smear it all over himself in front of the astonished crowd. And then he has the audacity to complain when he is yelled out and kicked out. Leaf, you are not an Australian and you never will be. Your posts are not funny, not witty, and never come close to satire or appropriate irony. You lack the intellect to achieve the perfect balance of shit that the Australian is so adapt at, and so you have dived deeper into post-irony hoping to find a competitive sort of humor, but instead you have reached the septic tank of comedy from which 4niggers drink. You do not even amuse as an autistic sperg does, as even they aren't as pathetic as your breed. Canadians, I implore you to look at yourselves in the mirror, and realize that you are looking at the face of a man beyond any redemption, a man who has fallen so far in the attempt to reach the Heavens that he resembles the Devil more than his neighbor. Pray for Canada, for they are staring down the muzzles of the cannons of God's wraith, and are in constant waiting for the slowmatch of lamentations to be applied. Canadians, repent for your evils before you have been obliterated in righteous fire and fury, the hour approaches

Why? The retards who can't handle it deserve to be mocked, and are probably the same kind of moron who got mad at the clapper meme when that was still popular.

What nobody likes is when it's spammed. Spam is the most utterly obnoxious form of shitposting outside of pretending to be retarded.
