I'm new to guns and am planning on getting something cheap like a Maverick88 for my first gun, hiking/camping/living in the woods isn't safe with all these coyotes, pumas, skinwalkers, windegos, and forest junkies around. So I need to be ready for whatever.

Open carry for once seems like a good idea because its my fucking property, some 9mm pea shooter won't save me from forest spooks.

I want to get a vest first on amazon because there are no milsurp stores around and I can use the vest for recreational purposes.

The mag pouches could probably fit a bunch of snack bars (a lot of energy/snake/protein bars have so be careful about that), other hiking necessitates or fishing materials

Advice, better chest rigs, etc welcome

I have used a ChiCom just like what you posted as just that. You might have more success with an actual outdoorsman's vest, but the ChiComs will last forever, provided you get an actual surp one. It would also be smart to pack some basic trauma supplies (you should carry those everywhere tbh) and some basic "survival" stuff too, as well as navigation stuff so you do not get lost and die.

If you are talking strictly gear, stick with either milsurp or really high end stuff- dont buy a condor rig for 20 dollars over a ChiCom for 15, it WILL break. It would also be advisable to get a good pack- the ALICE packs and German Mountain rucksacks are awesome, again, make sure what you are buying is legitimate. Look at Varusteleka, it is a Finnish surplus store that has pretty much the best selection of Euro military stuff, and Kommandostore, which is American, literally /k/, and incredibly thorough in their listings.
