i've been wondering for a while now what the N2 (non-nuclear) weapons in the Neon Genesis Evangelion series could possibly be.

by definition they can't be fission or fusion powered, yet their apparent explosive yield per kilogram is pretty much comparable to one of those so they likely aren't powered by chemical explosives either. i heard some theories that they could be anti-matter weapons, and while something like a hydrogen/anti-hydrogen would still technically be considered a nuclear weapon, using an electron/positron reaction wouldn't be.

this is also plausible for the technology level as seen in the show, as there is no mention of anti-matter propulsion/weaponry systems but the JSSDF is seen to be capable of producing massive amounts of positrons (even if they did use the entire electrical output of Japan to do so).

however, this is a somewhat unsatisfactory answer since no form of magnetic storage, particle accelerator, etc. can be seen on any of the N2 weapons.

what does /k/ think? pic not really related

Antimatter is the most common explanation. It's possible that the greater understanding of physics from the Eva project also led to humanity being able to produce and contain antimatter more easily.

ba7479  No.612560

I always wondered why the N2 missiles were so fucking huge, and launched from such close range. It could be that they are just a shitload of conventional explosives with a big engine strapped to it.

Octanitrocubane, maybe? Perhaps Heptanitrocubane?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octanitrocubane

The problem with antimatter explosions is that since the energy comes from the annihilation of the reactants, there's relatively little matter left over from the explosion, leaving you to rely on the ambient matter (nearby atmosphere) to absorb the energy of the reaction and turn that into a blast. As a result, antimatter explosions are underwhelming for the amount of energy released; most of it comes out in the form of radiation. Sure; you can irradiate the hell out of stuff with antimatter weapons, but you're not going to get the big theatrical explosions. Even a highly energetic antimatter explosion is like a firecracker compared to a comparable amount of conventional explosives.

That's my understanding, anyway.

File: 05285b8293480ff⋯.jpg (69.38 KB, 500x337, 500:337, Heat-Hawk-Escala-Real-03.jpg)

If you don't mind making this a mecha weapon general for a moment, does anyone have an idea what the temperature of an activated Heat Hawk is anyway? I'd figure that it has to be clearly hot enough to make carving through a Gundam easy, but it probably doesn't take much to just have a hunk of metal held by a mech heave through whatever the hell it wants, superheated or not

13ce5d  No.612648

>>612626

Not knowledgeable on gundam, but if the geometry is correct on an ax head it can cleeve metal if there is enough mass behind it and leverage in the appendages. Making would do fuck all to help amplify surface pressure since all it does is weaken the edge geometry, but I guess if it was plausible the temperature would be low and only high enough to over heat anything absolutely sensitive to heat like liquid fuel, gas, and circuitry.

50defa  No.612688

>>612559

i'm doubtful, there wasn't really that much mention of Eva project furthering understanding of physics as much as that of spirituality or whatever other mumbo-jumbo that AT-field nonsense was supposed to be. reminder that it took the entire energy grid of japan just to produce a positron beam that could only defeat Ramiel by outsmarting it. besides there aren't that much more ways of containing antimatter besides magnetic confinement IRL. AT-fields possibly could contain them since they're seen to interact with matter but it's said in the anime that nobody knows how to make artificial AT-fields yet. so unless they were rather foolishly using fragments of an extra Longinus Lance or something to produce AT-fields for the bombs i don't see how anti-matter could have been used in Evangelion.

>>612560

probably not. the missiles seem to have the same explosive yield as just the standalone bomb so they are probably designed the same way as a regular missile, with the length being the fuel and the nose being the actual N2 warhead. (the nose of the N2 missiles is only a bit larger than the N2 bomb)

there is no way that conventional explosives could produce a blast wave as seen in the first episode, barring likely impossibly-advanced thermobaric weapons

50defa  No.612696

>>612621

i don't know. most modern missiles are designed to be flak or air-burst but both the N2 missiles launched in the End of Evangelion don't detonate until a few seconds after impact with Unit-02 so i'm not even sure what kind of explosive they're supposed to function as in the first place.

and you're right about anti-matter being pathetic in explosive yield, which i guess is another thing to consider. N2 weapons were detonated in space and are seen producing expanding glowing spheres of gas. even inefficient fission weapons wouldn't visually produce more than a momentary flash in space so they are most likely chemical-based weapons.

>>612696

From your description it sounds like a Fuel-Air bomb but wrong. As in, the Fuel and Air are in the bomb, not just the fuel like in a regular FA bomb. Never watched Eva though. So question, does it say they can't make any artifical AT field or can't make a stable one? Cause if they could make a device that made an unstable wave, expanding outwards with no containment, you could get that cloud of gas you were talking about (depending on what particle is making up the wave).

7ccdb7  No.612714

>>612707

>As in, the Fuel and Air are in the bomb, not just the fuel like in a regular FA bomb.

i was considering this tbh, what if N2 weapons are just regular thermobarics next to high-pressure oxygen?

>So question, does it say they can't make any artifical AT field or can't make a stable one?

the anime says that research and development of artificial AT fields were underway but they didn't get any further with it before Evangelion's version of the end of the world. i don't want to get too deep into discussing the science of AT because that's a whole speculation-heavy tangent of its own, but basically all you need to know is that they are fields emanating from all living things (it isn't cleared up what is considered "living" and what isn't). humans (and presumbaly? possibly? all animals) really have very weak AT field and things like Evangelions, Angels, even the Longinus Lance have very strong AT-fields (or sometimes anti-AT-fields. no idea how they're different from regular at fields). once again the details aren't clear but radiation pressure isn't necessary to get an expanding cloud of gas. however what i find interesting is that explosions in space typically become pretty much invisible almost instantly and expand at a constant rate while the N2 detonations in space kept glowing for a good while and expanded at a decelerating rate.

7ccdb7  No.612715

>>612707

>>612714

i forgot to mention, Evangelions and Angels can manipulate their AT-fields at will. for example they can focus it all anisotropically in one spot to act as a shield against an incoming projectile, laser, other AT-field, etc.

>there's relatively little matter left over from the explosion

That's also the case with hydrogen bombs though. Even though the vast majority of the bomb's mass is not annihilated it's really fucking negligible compared to the yield of the bomb and given that H-bombs are always used as high altitude airburst it plays no fucking role at all in the destruction of the target.

Its a shitty anime the people who write these dont know anything about anything, they are autistic shutins. Hayao Miyazaki had to bring a dog in to show his artists how a canine mouth functions, because none of his artists had ever seen a dog. You grossly overestimate the fallout of these. It was the movie with the wolves, princess whatever.

Buy the CD with the directors commentary, and it's about 45 minutes in. Hayao tells the story himself so you can enjoy it.

The scene where the princess puts her arm in the giant wolfs mouth, and the wolfs lips sort of drape across the arm…. Hayao had to bring a dog and show it biting a stick so the artists could see how a dogs lips work.

All of them had previously only drawn dogs in simplistic ways, where the lips are just a line.

Kool thread idea, antimatter is what I want to say too.

Any chemical reaction that could produce an amount of energy comparible to a nuke would probably start some fission/fusion as a byproduct. Maybe a different explanation would be like lightning, produce such an absurd amount of electricity that everything in the surrounding area turns to plasma instantly. Then thermal expansion creates the blast..

Another meme scifi idea would be a super high power electromagnetic field. Take some superconducting magnets and some mythical batteries that have insane amounts of energy and make the whole thing repel itself. The heat generated frome the fragments traveling at a fraction of light speed in the atmosphere would turn them to plasma instantly. Then we are in the same situation as the lightning idea.

It actually is possible, If you take a coil of copper wire and discharge a bank of capacitors the size of a microwave oven through it. The coil will repel itself and send bits of copper everywhere at high speed. The problem is the energy density/peak energy output of the power source. If you had something that could discharge as quick as the capacitor while holding the total power of a battery you could make coils explode and also make really good rail guns which would probably be the first application of such technology.

The heat hawk would of been designed for anti-ship combat not anti-MS. If we use the Origin as our starting point then they made full halberd style heat hawks to cleave ships in 2. If I was bullshitting it I would suggest that it's heated so that when you lose your impact hit you can still cut through the rest of the ship. One of the biggest problems with the Z'gok's MSV was that it would punch into a ship and then be stuck there. The unit would go up with the ship as it had no way to detach it's self. Getting your axe stuck in a ship means you're useless at that point. Make it heat up and it can still melt it's way free
