Firing in the air is arguably more dangerous than on the ground (as long as you know where everyone feet are), plus I can't figure out a way to do it without completely broking stance or basically shooting at hear level which isn't exactly a good idea either.

The reason you keep the gun close to the body when pushing back is to avoid having your arm holding the weapon grabbed which is the most important thing.

In that case it looks like an ND just because he doesn't angle it away from his body which would be wise if deliberate. If I'm training to shoot the ground for some reason I'm going to make sure it's angled away so if training kicks in and I do it on concrete I don't fill my feet with brass jacket.

Based on personal experience with Russians, they have very little regard for human life and consequently safety compared to North West Europeans.
