In order for artillery, armor and air force to have any effect, the enemy needs to be isolated and pinned down by troops on the ground. Which takes automatic weapons fire.

One of the neat things about warfare is that everything is getting smaller. Rifles went from large objects that were heavy to small, high capacity assault rifles, formerly large bulky field guns have been replaced by AT weapons and grenade launchers, large anti-aircraft cannon are being replaced with MANPADs, etc. Even small mortars are coming back thanks to "smart" weapons and more effective HE.

One 4 man team with ~$100k in equipment could cause 10 million dollars in damage to an enemy force with proper tactics. Its beautiful.
