I flippantly said to someone the other day that hollowpoints don't expand because they just dont have the velocity and Im not sure where I got this. The only info I found online was with a range of 25 yards and pistols at like 7 yards or so. Real world hunting distances these are not quite, especially for groundhog.

It was a discussion where I was wondering if .223 FMJ would actually be fine for ground hob which I think it probably would.

The thesis being that at longer ranges, 22lr out of a rifle gets into the domain of pistols. It appears that (except the federal) your threshold for expansion is somewhere near the speed of sound, ~1000 fps

Velocity should be about 1100-1400 out of a rifle, depending on your setup, and will drop to somewhere in the 950-1200 @ 100yds. Seems likely expansion would happen

I'd recommend something bigger than .22 for the niggers. I'd also recommend not using hollowpoint .22 for anything larger than small rodents. You need all the penetration you can get.

That I can't answer because there's less data and I don't have a 300yd range handy.

But if the round is going to lose 15% of it's speed (and power) in 100 yards, it'll probably lose about that much in the next 100. If you're at the high end of the speed range to start, i.e. 1400 fps, I predict it'll get around 1000 fps @ 200 yds.

The real answer is go get yourself some water jugs and some ammo and go to the range. Also report back with pics. More data is better data and this board needs it.
