There's no discharge in the war!

c40127 No.532333

For most of history humans have painted their faces in times of war. Not only was this done to scare or intimidate the enemy, it also had religous purposes and allowed for easier identification in battle in an age where uniforms didn't exist yet.

Helmets quickly became popular once humanity figured out how to bend metal to it's will, and possibly even before that with padded caps and wooden masks depending on how you define a helmet.

Ever since helmets went out of fashion in an age where they were considered too costly to adopt for all troops, and were quickly reintroduced with the rise of artillery and shrapnel charges.

Protecting your head is obviously important, since there are a lot of non lethal threats to your consciousness on a battlefield. Be it falling mud and rocks, or stumbling and hitting your head on something.

But what about your face?

Twigs, rock, mud and other things can get into your eyes and not only blurr your vision, but punch our your eye, leaving your permanently blinded on one or even both sides.

Cold wind can cause cold bites you, and while this does appear to be a "pussy" issue, it will become a serious problem once you get anywhere close to eastern europe, swamps or desert areas, or you spend a couple months outside anywhere besides your backyard. Mosquitos, dust, sand, everything you don't want in your face is in your face.

So what are some good ways to protect your face?

For very cold conditions (besides the obvious balaclava/scarf) having some vaseline ready to apply to your exposed facial features (such as the nose or around the eyes) is always good, but Vaseline evaporates too quickly for that purpose, and I am not sure about the freezing point of it either. Applying a stick of butter to your face may sound retarded, but when it is cold and you don't want frostbites on your eyelids it would be an option to take some out of your ration. Most camo paints are actually quite oily, and do insulate a little if applied thick enough.

In swampy areas where mosquitos and other insects are not only annoying, but can accidentally enter the airways and cause irritations, and in large numbers can be a real shitshow for the solider. Mosquito nets worn around the face can help, as well as repellant sprays.

In dry areas dust and small rocks can be carried by the wind and into your eyes. Same goes for anywhere with lots of wind, but especially sandy beaches or deserts. Not only is this highly unpleasant, but also dangerous to the soldier's ability to see. Protective goggles are needed, but those have a tendency to fog up quickly. What do the locals use against the sand?

Hot areas require good ventilation to prevent heat shock and dehydration.

Another point would be protection in combat. There is a reason why modern riot police uses clear visors. Not only does this offer a good field of vision, but also protects against pepper spray, and to some degree against thrown projectiles. Gas masks obviously help against all of those things, but not only does it make communication difficult, it also makes breathing more uncomfortable. Ballistic protection masks as the russians use have been proven to protect at against weak projectiles, ricochets and shrapnel in some cases.

Psychiology should also not be entirely ignored. Intimidating an enemy with one of those silly skeleton balaclavas is retarded, but mounting very bright flashlights SWAT helmets to blind and confuse is a wide spread tactic. And a bunch of guys kicking in your door wearing gas masks and using loudspeakers to sound even more intimidating would surely make you at least consider shitting a brick before grabbing your gun.

What does /k/ think of head/face wear and protection. What are some cheap option? What is the high class?

If by high class you mean overpriced mailninja shit, then currently this is the best. Although it's not sealed and doesn't have an integrated gas mask.

While mud is a valid option and has been used throughout the ages, getting an infection from it is not unllikely if you just dig up some dirt and splash it in your face. Using clean water to moisten good soil is better than just jumping into a pit of mud, which are often used by pigs to bathe in, and may contain pig feces.

Really want to see a review of that turd. they have no internal pictures in any of their marketing so my guess is the armour rides far too close to the skull, with insufficient padding for a ballistic helmet. not to mention other parts of the design (the battery and fan compartments) look like they have a fuckload of chinks in them.

Is there some sort of visor that mounts to the side rails or night vision mount od a high cut (or MICH/PASGT with rails for that matter) like what riot cops wear?

So, would something like a chainmail hood with kevlar (or a similar material) on the outside protect from shrapnel?

Yes, but your head could be cracked if there is nothing hard to absorb and redistribute the force. You would need a layer of linen tabard under it to not die.

I know Germany uses some type of chainmail against stabbing/shrapnel, though haven't really looked into it. As >>532537 said you'd need some padding under it if you're using it on your head.

nigger the fact that they'll shoot someone in the legs sometimes, but whip out the taser to taze someone armed with a machete hacking people apart is fucking retarded. if the mudslime was smart enough he could have went full chinaman on these krauts and killed 50 or so before the german police put on their chainmail and cucktasers to beg him to surrender.

Not really against shrapnell, since those can just pierce through.

0aaae7 No.532592

Some manner of combined eye and face protection for winter use could be kinda fucking neat. Problem with traditional eye protection usually is that the fucking thing fogs up and blinds you in 30 seconds, or is extremely uncomfortable to wear to the point where you just rather risk the eye damage.

Yet, in winter months when its either raining or snowing horizontally you need to have something protecting your eyes, otherwise you are just going to keep your eyes shut most of the time if you are facing the wind.

>Not really against shrapnell, since those can just pierce through.

That's why it needs the kevlar. The chainmail is just for rigidity. Although that Canuck's idea of using flexible tubes of some kind might be better indeed.

>>532592

I honestly believe that some kind of a google that also functions as the upper part of a gas mask will be a necessity in the future, with flashbangs and white phosphorus and dust being so common. Then you could attach different lower parts, one only to just protect the lower part of the face, and an other one with a filter that works as a proper gas mask. Of course the point is to have a quick attach-detach system, and that you don't need to remove the helmet to put it on.

Do you think something like pic related would work well? So long as the slits are close to your eyes they restrict vision surprisingly little from what I hear.

Wait do they not make double lens combat goggles? I ski a lot and any not-shit ski goggles are double lensed, as well as usually being treated with anti-fog spray. Put some more anti-fog on the inside and you can hike 10 miles up a mountain without them fogging up.

Clear ballistic glasses safety goggles if you're autistic and a bandana are really all you need to protect your face to be honest. If you're dealing with propylene glycol-based solutions like tear gas or acidic components like hydrogen sulfide, soaking it in limewater (preferable) or alkali water should counteract it for the most part, and if you're dealing with more toxic/dangerous gases like mustard gas and such, you can always go WWI-style, piss on it, and hope the urine will absorb most of the harmful chemicals.

Obviously a gas mask is better, but if you legit need more protection than a liquid-soaked bandana and ballistic glasses, you might as well get a gas mask or paintball mask since that's about all that's gonna help you at that point. Welding masks are also nice but obviously hard to see out of.
