It's ironic. I would love to have some cowboy guns. But the constant barrage of gun control attempts makes me prioritize semi-autos and "tactical" weapons when expending my limited funds. sorry, I don't really have any stories. I always thought the 'don't date a horse-girl' memes were just because of rich coastal fucks, of course they're spoiled and awful. But with a little time and distance I see it applies to cowgirls as well. By and large trashy regardless of their (daddy's) wealth, loud, obnoxious, lacking modesty, often violent, spoiled, expensive, and sluttier than normal country girls. They are independent and can do anything a man can do, etc. You will never come first, you will always be a wallet and chaffeur for her and her horse trailer.

I role play as a modern American when I shoot at IDPA events. What are the caliber options for role playing a cowboy American? Is it just limited to calibers that were available in the era?

Going off of the Single Action Shooting Society's rulebook, they're far too anal retentive about what guns you're allowed to take, what features they may have, what accouterments you're allowed to carry, and so forth. I'm sure it ends up with everyone bringing the same three guns (Winchester 1894, Coach Gun, Single Action Army) with little to no variation.

Also, requiring a 'western persona' is stupid. Period attire is fine, but if I wanted to LARP I'd go to the Ren Faire.

Italians make a bunch of reproductions, so variety isn't an issue. People usually choose Ruger Vaquero's or SAA clones and Winchester 73's/92's or Marlin 1894's because those work well in competition and there's plenty of gunsmiths that know how to work on them.

The guys that like to dress up in period correct clothes and shoot black powder use other designs more often.
