Chadians aren't your traditional sub-Saharan nigs, they always had a very strong cavalry and desert raiders tradition. Local commanders supported by smart french officers transferred those existing local tactics and local military tradition to fit with modern weaponry and equipment.

I think you're seriously overestimating the infrastructure of the area.
There are no roads in between Niger and Chad.
As in "at all", it's just flat hard desert… anywhere you go is a road.
There is ONE "normal" (asphalt… one line) road, going from N'Djamena (Chad capital) through Cameroon and Nigeria up to Niamey (Niger capital) which is the one their heavy element (around dozen of BMPs and some Eland/AML) took moving on flatbeds.
The vast majority (pick ups with infantry) just trekked through the desert).
Move at night, set up camos net, semi-burrowed camp during the day, literally in the middle of nowhere.
No one is gonna see you until you're on top of them even if takes you weeks (took them about a week).
