For what, SHTF purposes? Learn about the local flora and fauna, what's good to eat, when it is, and what isn't. If you have access to areas where you can do so learn and practice bushcraft. Find a paramedic class and get some basic medical knowledge. Find something you like working with your hands, anything from making littles arts and crafts or sewing all the way up to blacksmithing or leatherworking. Take a cooking class, or just watch a lot of Jas. Townsends videos and try some primitive cookery.

It's ash or birch for arrows, in europe. And the last time I was in England, I saw plenty of old yew trees. And there's a lot more than casting going into a bullet. Can you make brass casings? Primers? Dare I say, smokeless powder? Does lead grow on trees?
You can make a perfectly serviceable arrow from riven wood, cedar for example, or river cane cane, or a stick of ocean spray.
Find a straight stick of cane, ocean spray, or the local equivalent. Remove bark, shave it and or heat bend it until straight enough for use.
Fletching isn't completely necessary for a close range target, especially if the arrow has a blunt, heavy small game tip. So use the unfletched arrow to kill a bird, and make fletched arrows.
With some sinew and pine pitch, fletch your arrow.
Make a point out of bone by rubbing on a rock.
Or make a trade point out of scrap steel (tools necessary: cold chisel, file, whetstone).
Attach the point using sinew and glue.
See the youtube channel of Shawn Woods for more examples.
Congratulations. You now have an arrow.
I must conclude that you're a citynigger of some variety, from the lack of industry and ingenuity you've displayed.

I would say that, in terms of skills, you should learn to shape metal with a cold chisel, files, hammer, hacksaw, and grinder, (plus forging), temper/heat treat steel, and learn to shape wood with rasps, sandpaper, planes, and saws, as well as getting good at using, installing, and removing different fasteners (lag bolts, hex bolts, screws, nails, rivets, etc.), as that knowledge literally as well as figuratively opens new doors in unexpected places. Once you're competent at the basics, experiment, and see where your passion lies. Attached is some reading material.

Is it possible to make interchangeable tube magazines for shotguns without an absurdly complex mechanism for retaining the shells? I can't seem to find any cross-fertilize showing how various shotguns retain the shells (keep them from being pushed out by the spring until needed) in their tube.
I understand that box magazine fed shotguns are never going to be reliable as long as the rimmed shotshell is King. However, I see no reason why interchangeable tubes haven't taken over unless there is something I'm overlooking.
46c899 No.514808

>interchangeable tube magazines
Many shotguns use the tube to keep the barrel attached and very few these days allow the barrel to be screwed into the receiver.
Really the only way to keep the rounds from being pushed out would be to have a block that's lowered as the tube is inserted into the receiver.
>I understand that box magazine fed shotguns are never going to be reliable as long as the rimmed shotshell is King
Not only because of the rim, but because the the brass is incredibly thin and it mainly uses plastic or paper which deforms over a long period of time when they're compressed.
784d2e No.514809
>>514803
Most shotguns have one or two retainers in the receiver to keep the shells in place until needed, the tube itself is only a spring and follower. 1897's are hilarious when you depress both of them.
b40e8b No.514810
>>514808
I should have clarified that my question was more about hypothetical designs so the barrel wouldn't be an issue as there are so many proven alternatives for fixing it to the receiver. Also, I don't see the pump handle being an issue as it could simply have a recess in the bottom for the tube (think ∩ shaped).
I guess my real question is how do existing tube designs retain the shells once they're loaded? The shells clearly "click" into the magazine on my 870 when I'm loading it but I can't seem to figure out what is actually holding them in. Even cutaways aren't very helpful. Something obviously holds the shells in place and is bypassed by the action so the shell can be pushed onto the lifter but I can't figure out how it works.

Building off this chart, how difficult is it to determine exactly what kind of steel a piece of scrap is made of? If one had access to a large amount of scrap material, how hard of a time would they have sorting it out for melting down?
f543ea No.514857
>>514850
Even with a chart, and knowing what the part was (leaf spring or saw blade for example), it's very very hard to know the exact steel. However, you can usually get in the range well enough to heat treat it or work with it. The leaf spring might be 5160, 8670, 1060, or 5150. Or a proprietary alloy. The saw blade might be L6, 1080, 15n20, or O1. To determine whether something is mild steel or hardenable steel, spark testing is one possible way, as different alloys spark differently when ground. Also, unless you're a steel making plant, you won't be melting it down. There is plenty of good information on all of this out there, and on youtube.

8+1 if you use modern mags rather than USGI surplus.
The thing about pistols is that using them correctly depends on roughly three factors - how you hold it, how you depress the trigger, and how you use the sights. Yes I know people can think of more, fuck off with your shitty philosophical rants
The grip of the 1911 is arguably the most natural of semi-automatic pistols due to its geometry, making your hold on it less of a factor in disrupting your accuracy. The trigger is similarly unique and paired with a single action hammer. The sights are shit so let's not talk about that.
It's the halfway mark between a revolver and a more modern pistol. There's room for it, it's a competent choice, and when shot placement is king it's better to have an option that may fit you than stuffing a bigger magazine in your hand.

The 1911 is an excellent sidearm. For a modern CC weapon, a GI-Style a1 is far from the best choice, but there's no reason to scoff at a Para or Rock Island a2 that takes doublestack mags. Even if you have midget tier hands and yet still shoot a .45 a tuned single-stack isn't a terrible choice. A gun that you are absolutely comfortable with and capable with is worth a couple of extra rounds in the magazine in my opinion.
9x19 1911's are also smooth and soft as fuck shooters. Wouldn't take one over my SP-01 though.

It's not as smooth shooting as 9x19 or .45, but a big part of that is because it's crammed into a 9x19 frame. Yes it will work, but it's a larger cartridge, it needs a larger gun. In my personal experience the only .40's I've ever enjoyed shooting were on .45 frames. You don't get any substantial performance change over 9mm, and you're left with higher cost and less capacity. As the great LEO experiment with it's ending, those problems will only exacerbate from here.

It's an answer to a problem presented by stupid people. 10mm was the prime choice by the FBI, but after they discovered that people without proper training could not handle it, a shortened, and thus neutered, round was proposed and quickly adopted.
.40 S&W isn't very special - it's an unneeded compromise between 9x19 and .45 with having the recoil and capacity of the latter with performance more similar to the former. Not that it's bad, mind you, but it's a very pointless round that exists simply to provide people with what can be summed up as a "big 9mm".

Tbh fam, I think the first step would be the loss of the ability to maintain a power grid, as that would remove the ability of people to effectively machine or extrude firearms parts.
The second step would be to have some kind of massive cotton shortage, a shortage so bad that cotton basically went extinct as a plant, so that no more nitrocellulose could be produced.
After that it's just a matter of waiting for all the metallurgists, machinists, and crafty old bastards to die.

Killing the power grid would remove the ability for new firearms and ammunition to be produced for good period of time before it is either rebuilt or adapted to steam engines or some shit like that. In the immediate aftermath, existing munitions would be used, but that can't last forever. Whether or not they bridge the gap between collapse and reconstruction is anyone's guess.
Nitrocellulose can be easily synthesized with any sort of cellulose, not just cotton. Cotton is the most readily available form, but it's everywhere. Using something like paper instead of cotton wool yields the same compound. If naturally occurring cellulose goes away, all life is going away too.

That's true, but the chemistry of non-cotton nitrocellulose is different enough to change how well it works as propellant, or at least that's my understanding of the subject.
And it's not like you're going to be producing paper with no power and at the very least a global cotton shortage. No real reason to even bother with making more paper. Also, have fun making nitric acid without electricity. You could probably make more ammo for a few years, and then you'd just be out entirely until you rebuilt the grid. Which, let's be honest, probably won't happen in a complete 100% collapse scenario.

I know of blackpowder, but there's no real way to stop people from getting at the chemical components of it without destroying the basics of everyday life…. Plus, TBQH, without a power grid, making black powder would become extremely difficult. It's not impossible, but black powder guns would be reduced to effectively being the laser rifles of their time.

This is fuddlore AFAIK, mostly based on a mythical scene from "The Green Berets" with John Wayne, where John Wayne smashes a prop M16 at the receiver extension by swinging it against a tree.
Even if it is aluminum, the reciever and buffer tube are mil-spec, heavy duty aluminum, threaded together in a very very autistic way that gives it more tensile strength than you will likely be able to physically put on it.
I mean, I wouldn't reccomend smacking bricks with it, but if you have broken the buffer tube of your rifle on another human being, you have probably literally shattered whatever bone you did it on.

It would depend on your skills and access to equipment, if you were planning on modifying and existing chest of drawers, then you'd have to make sure that the drawers have a false front, that can be detached from the main body of the drawer. You'd then have to modify the original drawer, to make it more shallow and create a void at the bottom, and construct a new shallow drawer to fit in the space you've just created. If the drawer is on slides, then you'd have to install the new small drawer inside the bigger one with slides, and then attach the front to the small drawer. After that it'd only be a question of making the mechanism to attach and detach the front from the big drawer.
You'd probably need some experience or a cabinet maker to make this decently. Here's how I'd make this in the traditional way, e.i. dovetailed and without slides.

For home defense a good old fashioned 1911. ATI makes the cheapest decent ones from what I've seen. I think RIA still makes 9mm single stacks too if you prefer that, or try to find a Star Super B.

Did something dumb and don't know where else to go for advice. I went out for a walk, starting in my back yard, but ended up crossing property boundaries. Most plots are several acres of mostly unmolested woodland, so it never struck me as a big deal. I've done it several time before, seeing as it's nice to just follow deer trails and see no man made structures save for centuries old stone walls.
This time though I walked straight into a game camera. I found one once before, on the same property I think, but I saw it from aways off and avoided the line of sight. This time I didn't notice til it was ten meters away, pointed right at me.
I freaked out, thinking I had stumbled across a weed grow or otherwise didn't want to be implicated in trespassing. After a few minutes of staying frozen and breathing heavily I ended up coming around form the back and taking it down. I scattered the batteries and took the SD card. Turns out it didn't even capture me. I went back and put the SD card back in the camera, which I left in the hollow of a tree not far from where I found it. I'm feeling guilty and worried, so I was thinking about leaving an apology and a few buck in the battery compartment and putting it back where I found it. Retarded? Should I just pretend it never happened?

I'm guessing with all that adrenaline pumping through your system, you didn't remember what brand the batteries were. Would it be too risky to go back and search for one of them and then buy him a new set? Most game cameras sit out for weeks on end before anyone picks them up. It's also a good bet that whoever put it up would be looking to take it down close to a weekend right before he goes hunting, rather than on a wednesday in the middle of the week. A second option is to put in a common brand of batteries and hope he is forgetful enough to not notice that they don't match the original set; and even if he does, I doubt he would attribute it to malice.
That's what I would do.

Just buy a new spring, strelok.
If the body of the magazine is intact, and the spring feeds rounds, you're fine. If it doesn't feed rounds, that's either because the follower is getting stuck and you should sand down the burr from the interior of the magazine, or the spring is worn out, or just hates you today. I've had that happen – was fine the next.
I can't tell you how many compression cycles the "average" spring can put up with … but I bet it's a three digit number or low-fours.
If you can buy/make/steal/copy/print a spring, the rest of it is fine. Unless you drove over it with your pickup. In which case, like the owl asked about tootsie-pops, the number of times you can reload is "three."

If you really wanted a slick setup, you'd build a rifle with a modular magwell mounted forward of the trigger group. By swapping out the magwell, (and barrel, bolt, recoil spring), you could run any cartridge out of any pistol magazine with one rifle.
>why does the market hate me?
The market doesn't hate you; manufacturers are lazy.
Making a pistol cartridge AR is cheap and low effort.
Making a straight blowback carbine based on a pistol you're already making is cheap and low effort.
Even when the Ruger Police Carbine and Marlin Camp Carbine were still in production, they were basically just a scaled up 10/22 and Model 60, respectively, feeding from P Series and Model 59 magazines, respectively. 46c899 No.516845

>Is it entirely impractical
Generally speaking, a full-length rifle or shotgun is impractical to use in a home, but anything can be used with enough practice and judgement.
You will be deafened for a short time due to the enclosed area and the flash can affect your vision for the same reason.
>Is it … a bad choice for a first firearm?
As long as you do your research, learn how to field strip it, and are confident with your choice, I wouldn't say it is.
However, with most firearms there is a chance for you to develop a horrible flinch because you don't quite know what to expect from the recoil until the first shot - then you remember the muzzle rise and the push against your shoulder, so you may instinctively brace or otherwise expect it in a way that negatively impacts both your shooting experience and performance. It's very difficult to reverse, as well.
It's because of this that .22LR is a much better caliber to start with, because it has no recoil and the report is minimal. A great starting point that won't likely create bad habits.

Also known is the biggest diference in lubrication during WW2 was how it handled the environment (Russian used oil didn't fuck up in freezing cold, German stuff did). Motor oil works fine as lubrication. Pretty much all oils will work fine except for most vegetable oil based lubes which react with oxygen and gum up. Note that fresh motor oil isn't that bad for you in regards to occasional exposure, but you definitely don't want to play around with used motor oil.
I have become partial to using alg's "go juice" though, it's noticeably slicker than other oils. I've started using it on some manually spun fruit testing devices for work, and even had co-workers ask me what I did.
It's very thin, and creeps around fairly well too, but somehow doesn't seem to disappear until I physically rub it off during cleaning. But the real reason I use it is because it's isn't toxic. Ever since I worked at a tire repair/oil change place and saw the shaking hands due to fucking nerve damage from decades of constant direct exposure to solvents and shit, toxicity has remained in the back of my mind. If I'm shoot/clean guns for years, then I might as well limit exposure.
While it's biobased, it doesn't gum up or dry out (it will try to spread out though) or even freeze and I've used it for a year and a half with no problems. I probably wouldn't let an unused gun sit with it for 20 years though.
I'm not sure how it performs in regards to rust prevention. I've not had any problem, but then again I don't live by the ocean or have salty/acid sweat. It'll stay where you put it, but it's easily absorbed off a surface, so I suspect it's surface protection on the outside of a gun may not be that great if that's what you need.

That and clearing rooms with a heavy ass rifle made back when CQC was solved with sub machine guns, maybe it's not that well for home defense. Better than nothing, but I think it'd be better to buy an AR15 if you're looking for a home defense gun.

>The two-part pan is marginally useful for keeping a stirring spoon, food prep knife etc off the ground while you cook
>But its rubbish as a lid for boiling drinking water, doing boil-in-the-bag etc
You should pair it with a decent canteen cup with a handle that goes down to the ground as an extra support, and a lid
>Lids are very important for boiling water, especially when carrying your fuel and not using an open fire
>Also they keep bugs and dirt from getting into the stuff you've just made
But there are a ton of cheap nesting pan sets with lids and folding handles to choose one
>Stainless steel is heavier but easier to keep clean in the field, alu pans burn and stick food very easily

The pissing match between them is generally down to personal preference. People talk about the G3 having a more violent recoil, in my experience I've shot examples of both that were soft and smooth and examples that were harsh. I've liked the G3 patterns I've shot more than the FAL patterns I shot, but like I said I've seen good and bad of both.
Going by quality I'd put DSA and PTR on the same level, century's clusterfucks are always a possible miss, and if we're talking bonafide military produced guns well neither of them were ever meant to be an STG-57.

689bdb No.517341

Intrinsically? Yes.
A bolt-action rifle has fewer moving parts, faster lock time, and less barrel harmonics than a semi-automatic. These all contribute to a more accurate shot.
In practice? It depends.
The first shot will be more accurate, but if you need to quickly take more shots the time it takes to reacquire the target after cycling a round in a bolt action rifle becomes a problem. If those shots must be made quickly, they will be less accurate because the rifleman doesn't have the time to fully line up the shot. With a semi-auto it's much easier to quickly line up another target due to less recoil and the fact that they don't have to manually cycle in a new round.

I actually emulated this accident with a chamber-flag, which holds the bolt inside the buffer – just enough you can't separate upper from lower.
I suspect you could reach through the ejection port with some floss, wrap around the bolt and start tugging. You could squirt WD40 around the bolt to try to un-stick the carrier from the buffer, or as two streloks have said, tap the buttstock with a hammer.
Maybe all at once, yes? If it comes to the point where you have to destroy the gun to fix the problem – which is exceedingly unlikely, you don't have to destroy much. Take the buttstock off, and cut through the buffer. Try to catch all the spring loaded parts. The carrier should fit through the hole, allowing you to separate upper from lower, at which point you can replace your buffer tube and put it all back together.
Incidentally, I just read that you encounter this every shot if what you have, is an AR-10/LR308, and you're using an ar15's carbine buffer in your riflestock. See, the ar10 carrier is longer than the 15's, and the buffer has to be just a bit shorter to make room, as well as there are a couple fewer coils on the buffer spring. If you use the ar15 rifle buffer it won't cycle all the way. If you go with an AR15's (much shorter) carbine buffer for your rifle tube … the carrier slides into the buffer tube and sticks.
Strelok, you might consider replacing your buffer spring. Once you fix your gun, that is.

Doesn't his description sound like it's farther back than the bolt catch?
I guess if I'm double posting, I'll ask a related question. When I took my new AR15 to the range, they told me that when the range is cold, they prefer the bolt be locked open. Easy enough on a bolt-action but on my gun, the bolt catch doesn't really 'catch' the bolt if there isn't a magazine's follower pushing on the LRBHO switch. So, I can manually catch the bolt but a strong breeze will let it slam home. Obviously with no magazine, also per range instructions, on an empty chamber but not in-total in compliance because there's a closed bolt. So I use the yellow flag and the safety officer was mollified but seemed to think my explanation was weak.
…so, was it weak, /k/ ?

Currently I've got a .308 bolt action carbine that's a bit slow for the job, and I was thinking about big-bore AR chambering - narrowed it down to .450 Bushmaster, .458 SOCOM, and .50 Beowulf.

Somewhat mainstream and popular, can find it in every gunshop. Main downside is Remington.

I've been doing a tiny bit of research and it's actually a decent round. .50 Beowulf itself does well and reloading is cheap and easy.
Factory ballistics are similar to .45-70 but with a reach out to about 200 yards without major drop, though with loading your own ammunition it can be extended fairly easily with guides all over the internet.
The real downside is the cost and quality of the upper receivers - Anderson Arms, the ones who created the round, sell their own and are very high in price while companies like Radical Firearms make cheaper options but with a drop in quality(unmodified 7.62 bolt head without clearance for the .50 case, some surfaces are left without finish, chatter marks from machining in the BCG).
The round is not a meme, but the price on the upper sure is.

A few random things I've picked up over the years -
Never believe that a gun has not been fired.
If it's priced under the going rate, there's a reason for it and generally it's not because the wife wants it gone.
Always assume milsurp has been tampered with in some way unless it still has packing grease on it. Also, thanks to /k/, ALWAYS assume the owner has shoved the bolt handle up his ass at least once
Know your brand markings and know when they aren't there; a friend of mine bought a "Smith & Wesson" that was actually a Spanish copy made out of iron.
When it comes to haggling, you have to make friends with the guy before you make an offer. They're more likely to agree when you're on good terms and know you aren't an asshole. This may include pretending you do, in fact, have passionate feelings about the War of Northern Aggression(depending on state), and agree that Ted Nugent is entertaining and definitely still relevant today.
Everything is priced higher than what they're willing to sell it for. See above on how to fix that - asking "What's your bottom dollar" will piss off most people but some may budge. Only do that if they aren't in the mood for conversation.
Be prepared to listen to tasers going off every few seconds.
If you don't buy anything else, get some jerky.

Before going to a gunshow, there are some basic rules of etiquette that you must be aware of. The first is appropriate dress code. It is important to wear clithing that suits the occasion. Milsurp, hunting gear, or clothing in the color and pattern of the American flag are all acceptable. The more patriotic or battle ready the outfit, the better. Morale patches are expected and mandatory, just as a tie in any decent workplace Casual clothing, on the other hand, is considered a faux pas and grounds for polite removal. In general, follow this simple guideline: if a civvie would wear it on the street, it ain't fit to feel a gun's heat.
The second important rule to follow is personal hygiene. As you are in an enclosed environment with many other people, you should take care not to provide an offensive odor. This can be easily remedied by splashing a healthy amount of Hoppes No. 9, Ballistol, or CLP on your neck, armpits, and anywhere else you are liable to sweat from. This will vastly improve the show's atmosphere for all those around you.
Finally is the matter of transportation of items, both personal and purchased. Make sure to bring a large, bulky duffel bag, gym bag, or military rucksack that can accomodate a locking mechanism. The large size is recommended for the purposes of easily carrying sizeable purchases. In order to avoid thievery, it is recommended to clutch it possessively to your person at all times, and constantly shift your vision to keep as many people in your field of view as possible. It may be that security will ask to examine your bag. This is actually a cultural exchange amongst gun show attendees, a chance to prove your commitment to the key principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Do not agree to a search or hand over your container, as this marks you as a social pariah for the event and many vendors will outright refuse to sell to you. The appropriate response is as follows:
1. If security is reaching towards your bag, slap their arm away with one hand while using the other to maintain a tight grip on the bag.
2. Shout "YOU'LL TAKE IT FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS!" as loud as you can manage. Similar to the Japanese shouting "Kanpai!" when they drink, tgis is not considered a sign of rudeness, but rather enthusiasm.
3. Shove your hand into your waistband as fast and violently as possible. This represents your capability for fast, decisive action, a highly valued trait amongst gun owners.
This concludes the interaction successfully, and you will find yourself warmly welcomed amongst the patrons and vendors alike for proving your passion for firearms.

When my particular upper/lower got stuck (do you have a Lantac upper? Or do you use the accu-wedge?) it was because there was a wedge applying a lot of pressure to those pins. Also, was thinking of getting a SCCY cpx-2. Is that an alright carry pistol? I heard the trigger wasn't great and it was picky over ammo. The trigger was ok when i felt it up at a gun store, but it could be lighter. Should I go for it or try to find something better. I was just talking about 5.45 with a coworker today. Depending on where & when, it's still a little cheaper per round than 7.62x39 but slightly more likely to dry up.
Also! 5.45 steel (nobody uses brass) can't be had virgin/fresh/unfired, and the rim is slightly different than everything else you could otherwise fireform into that shape.
And nobody seems to have the dies anyway, so if/when the supply of milsurp AK74 ammo dries up, there's virtually no way to reload that stuff. Of course, people have made AKs in 6.5 grendel so maybe if/when it dries up, a caliber conversion is the order of the day.

They're functional and reliable guns, but hardly "perfection". For civilian shooters there's at least half a dozen plastic pistols on the market for a hundred USD or so cheaper that are just as good (M&P and CZ being the obvious ones). Glock isn't at Colt levels of "Fuck you civilians" but they're definitely focused on government contracts over civilian sales so I'm sure LEO bulk purchase is closer to the competitors. Also you need to pull the trigger to disassemble it. That's not a problem for enthusiasts who will make sure it is unloaded, but when you give it to cops who only shoot once a year at qualifications or conscripts you shove out the door as quick as possible you're going to have some NDs.

You can swap the barrel but the magazines will not interchange nor will the rounds work well in either magazine(GAP is shorter than ACP)

Gaston thought he was doing people a favor but didn't realize that .45 ACP is absolutely everywhere in many flavors whereas GAP was untested and unproven with very little variety in loading. Grip angle, featureless slide that hates sweaty hands and gloves, tiny slide lock/release, no manual safety, and Gaston had it priced much lower than what it was initially sold at because they're so cheap to make, but marketing insisted it be sold for more otherwise people would dislike it. So instead of having the popularity of a Hi-Point now you get fans comparable to that of the Apple Corporation who buy the same gun with a different number on the slide.

I noticed that trying to aim with the bead sight on the Winchester is tougher than on the Mossberg, because while the Mossberg has this kind of indented and textured surface that makes it easier to see the bead, the Winchester just has a smooth, polished surface which reflects light and actually made it tough to aim.

Hunting and sporting rifles. If you're a European gun owner, you most likely have quite a few guns. Sauer and Blaser hunting rifles, and Beretta shotguns are quite popular. In Scandinavia, the Sauer SSG-3000 (200STR) in 6.5x55 Swedish is very popular as a sporting rifle, and it's underpriced due to massive imports and being officially adopted as the rifle of the Volunteer Shooter Organisation (Det Frivilige Skyttervesen), a post-war rifleman organisation hosting competitions and the like.

The other option that I wasn't considering till I saw it was a Beretta ARX100 due to its just slightly higher price than the FN, but with a complete set of sights. The base is a belt with suspenders, and the clips are used to hold the pouches onto the belt. The holes on the belt are just for the suspenders to attach and to lace other things onto the belt as needed. The clips are sold seperately because they can be used for a lot of things, including replacing missing/broken clips. They are fairly self-explainatory once you have them in your hands.
The packs come in different sizes, and the frames are mostly sold seperately. Just make sure you get the right size frame for your pack, and again, its fairly simple once you have both pieces. However, there is nothing stopping you from using a non-ALICE pack with ALICE LBE. I would check out some of the old milsurp stuff if I were you. Just keep in mind that old leather stuff will need oiled to become usable again, but you can fix that with a paper towel, a 5 dollar of 3 in 1 oil, and about 10 minutes.

A vertical pistol grip like Mossberg has will beat the shit out of your hand.

I’m planning on buying a new rifle by the end of this year, bugeted around $1500. Problem is I can’t figure out what caliber maybe the best to get for where I live. Right now I own a Type 56 SKS and an M1 Garand.
The calibers I’ve considered so far are: 5.56, 7.62 (NATO and russian), and 6.5meme.
I intend to use the rifle for both fleshy targets and technicals (for SHTF). Optic would be used and the furtherest out I’d engage would be 400m.
I’ve been looking at PTR, DS Arms, CMMG rifles and considering custom building an AR (for the 6.5 grendel caliber).
Weight isn’t so much an issue as this would be for home defense/other utilies.

Since you're already stocking 7.62x39 and .30-06' I'd suggest sticking with those, getting a decent AK and tricking it out once you figure out how you want to mod it out. Honestly though if you want some fun and have access to a decent range why not go right up to a .338LM, $1500 will get you a decent Savage and a reloading setup.
On a related note I can't be the only one pissed Savage doesn't do a 110BA Stealth in .30-06'.

Need advice. Given I don't have much in the way of equipment or tools, and really like side charging, I need to make a change.
Specifically, having bought the Lantac "advanced upper receiver" and an on-sale side-charging carrier from BCA, it turns out their understanding of "side charging AR-15" differs. The carrier can't go all the way back – so the bolt catch catches, but on the carrier, not the bolt face. So the side charging handle (a grade-2 10/32 screw at that juncture) is getting hammered all out of shape, and I'm getting feed issues.
So either I need to grind about a 1/4" tall by 1/3" deep into the upper (the Lantec is extra-thick 7075) or re-drill the carrier forward of it's current screw-hole and move my handle forward, hopefully (I'll double check today) not so far it will prevent going into battery.
Also this arrangement seems to need side charging because I can't use the standard handle unless I use both hands and brace the stock against my belly, like it was a 150lbs cross bow instead of a normal carbine spring. I've tried changing the cam pin (lantac talks up their special CP-r360 pin that comes with the extra thick upper) but haven't had a chance to fire it yet. But I think cycling snapcaps through is less painful. Not "easy" like on my buddy's AR, but shouldn't require mortaring between every misfire.
Experiences with Lantac? Thoughts on drilling the carrier?

So bear with me here, I'm a nogunz living a socialist shithole reading about firearm due to curiosity also because I want to know what to do in order to not kill myself because of accidental discharge when China invades and I have a few questions:
1. I read a certain poster mentioning that the reason the meme "M16/AR jams more than AK" comes from way back in the Vietnam war because of barrels not being chrome-lined and rounds are out-of-spec. The thing is, I also read that even in modern rifles, not all of them are chrome-lined so here's the question: does a barrel not being chrome-lined have as much a negative effect as a round being out of spec? And if some modern rifles aren't chrome-lined, why don't they jam like a motherfucker like in Vietnam war?
2. About Direct Impingement, I understand that the gas is directed from the barrel, through a tube and blew straight at the bolt carrier to force it back and make it cycle. My question is: does DI always behave in a manner like a short stroke piston operation (an explosive force is applied on the bolt carrier, forcing it back) or does it also behave in a manner like a long stroke piston operation (the force is continuously applied on the bolt carrier as it moves back until it's moved back all the way)?
46c899 No.521951
>>521947
A chrome-lined bore is just to prevent corrosion if you can't clean it in a timely manner, that's all.
The M16 jamming in Vietnam was because of shit ammunition and logistics not supplying cleaning kits, so you had dry and dirty guns firing bad ammunition, which is the worst case scenario.
Due to the short piston, it can only function as short stroke. In fact, that's another reason it fucked up so much in Vietnam - the ammunition overgassed the action and ended up destroying cases without actually extracting them.
The M16 isn't actually a true Direct Gas Impingement rifle, but don't let the Piston AR fags hear that

The G43 being more $ isn't really an issue for me, I'd probably pass on the mak to my mother or something when I move out of the city if I had it.

What was the first mass produced 5.56 AK?
>>522081
>bullpup
>308
Pick one. 308 rifles are good and 5.56 bullpups are acceptable (but inferior to pretty much any AR you'd get for the same price). Combining them is a bad idea: You don't want your face that close to the muzzle on a 308 with a bare muzzle, let alone the break a 308 should be paired with.

I've fired a 5.56 bullpup, I just wanted something bigger, only thing I was really worried about was the recoil, the awkward weight, the risk of explosions by the face, ergonomics, and the expensive cost. I basically want a bullpup battle rifle, where if you attach a suppressor it's still not that much larger than it was, but I don't see any having a recoil dampening system either to handle the higher fps though it is balanced by the weight of the suppressor.

At what point does an army formation go from being tactical to strategic? Platoon is obviously tactical, while a field army is obviously strategic. Where does the split occur?

Tactical refers to a specific operation often in action or to be in action in which a specific select small group operates as a single entity, tactically.
Strategic is the level above that, generally, where many groups operate together often in a larger timeframe and with more moving components.
Otherwise they're generally the same with slight nuances.
Typically a strategic formation, mission, or situation is based around a focus or many focuses, while a tactical one is more dynamic.

Flintlocks. Don't even own one and couldn't find info elsewhere. So:
Do you have to put the cartridge paper in after the bullet, and if so why?
I've seen a flintlock at a "half-cock" position and a "full-cock" position. Is there a real difference, and if so, what is it? Is it better to fire with the former or latter, and if so, why? If not, why?
46c899 No.522187

Powder first, then bullet.
Half-cock is your safety position and it will not fire from this notch. Full-cock is when it's ready to fire.
>couldn't find info elsewhere
You didn't want to find info elsewhere, or a simple google search would have helped you.
But that's okay, this thread is for spoonfeeding.

I went and applied for a handgun permit. It had some questions when I moved to this city which was like 15 years ago when I was like 8 I don't remember the exact date but would they deny me the permit if I got it wrong? Also as of 2016 they require you to get a mental check? wtf is this bullshit. This is North Carolina btw.
I also to get a CCW. What handgun should I get? I really want a small handgun but no revolvers. I am looking for maybe a 10mm or 9mm.

Generally they do if only because they want paperwork to be consistent, but they might forgive you and ignore it. Don't be surprised if they reject you based on that, though.
>mental check
>North Carolina
Yeah, it was likely part of the attempted national sweep of gun control after Sandy Hook.NC and MA got fucked during it.
>What handgun should I get?
>small handgun but no revolvers
Go to a gunshop and fingerfuck anything that looks nice. Don't buy immediately, it's a good idea to do a bit of research so you don't accidentally get a shitty pistol.
>maybe 10mm
>small handgun
haha no
9x19 is generally the smallest you should go for CCW, though, and there are tons of options.

Palmetto State Armory. Battlefield Vegas (A large rental range, pretty much the ultimate endurance test at hundreds of thousands of rounds) says they hold up fantastically for their price. Plenty of others have vouched for accuracy.
They don't have any good uppers today, but they change what's on sale daily so watch.

I've been pretty impressed with my Streamlight Polytac for EDC, can't see why it wouldn't work for home use either. Only a few dollars difference between it and the G2X Pro though, judging by everything I've seen quality wise I'm willing to bet the Surefire is worth the extra ten bucks.

How do you guys feel about Deep Springs College? I'm a city fag with Asian parents That dont let me do anything cause they're fags and have a horde of relatives ready to punish me (read kill) for "Not showing respect to your elders" I plan on leaving them cause they think "we so safe in the city" when the house the street over got invaded by mudslime and nignogs. Are there any based colleges that teach you how to actually live your life and stresses independence and self-sustainability?
I used to be a Boy Scout, but its gone downhill since the whole SJWing, my based scoutmaster was some vietnam vet who taught us everything and had a legal full auto BAR he let us shoot at age 13 :^)
now they admit girls LOL… They must be really really desperate for monies rn

I havent heard much on the college itself, but I'm somewhat familiar with the area, it was alright, but if you head a little more north east, Lassen county was a pretty comfy area, I'm sure they have nice colleges up there too, or just move out of state. Also, it's genuinely a shame what happened to boyscouts, sad to see such a great program mess up this bad

Depends on what you want to use it for.
Caliber
10mm if you plan on facing four-legged threats (bears, etc.) on a regular basis.
.40 S&W if you like the idea of 10mm but want a small gun and don't like recoil.
.357 Sig if you like 10mm, don't like recoil, and hate your wallet.
.380 auto if you really need a tiny gun for deep concealment
.45 if you don't mind severely limited capacity and are only going to be using it against people.
9mm for all other circumstances.
As far as brand goes:
You cannot go wrong with a Glock. They're ugly, they have shit triggers, but they will always have your back. Best of all, they have one in every size or caliber you could want, from the full-sized Glock 20 in 10mm to the tiny Glock 43 (9mm) or Glock 42 (.380) and everything in-between.
Ruger has a reputation for durability, their pistols have somewhat decent to very good triggers, and you'll save some money over a Glock.
Smith and Wesson has a very good line of 9mm and .40 S&W pistols, plus their Bodyguard in .380 which is a VERY popular and highly-regarded deep-cover pistol. They generally have good triggers and nice fit and finish, but they can be a bit more expensive than Glocks.
The pistols from Sig Sauer are basically nicer Glocks. Better-looking, better triggers, but just as reliable. Significantly more expensive than Glocks, but totally worth the money if you fall in love with one.
I don't have a ton of experience with Kimber, but they have pretty much the gold standard 1911s and their price point reflects that.
Rock Island Armory makes very inexpensive pistols with generally positive reviews. Their 1911s are all hand-fitted and will function flawlessly, but the finish and aesthetics can be pretty lacking.
There are lots of other manufacturers, but that's a decent run-down of the more popular ones.
tl;dr get a Glock 26.

If I take a begginer's class, what should I look for? Things like what to pay special attention to, or common errors someone might make?
9dd312 No.523378

Disclaimer: I have never taken an instructional firearms class/course.
Your priorities are as follows:
1. Learn basic gun safety. Do not take a class that ONLY offers this. Though INCREDIBLY important, gun safety can be summed up with 4 rules and is not worth paying money for.
2. Learn to operate your firearm. Learn to break it down, clean it, maintain it, troubleshoot (how to clear a jam, basically) and make 100% sure you know what everything actually does on your firearm. Again, this is something you probably don't need a dedicated class for. It's probably something you should know before you look for a class.
3. Marksmanship: you are looking for a class that consists of you shooting targets while a qualified shooter watches you. This person should be able to correct any problems with your stance, trigger pull, sighting, and should be able to guide you through becoming a better shooter.
4. Self-defense: the class should help you learn to draw and fire under stress, as well as handgun retention techniques, force de-escalation, and basic self-defense moves within the context of firearms.
Find shooting instructors near you, make some calls, and have them explain exactly what you'll learn in their classes.

So I'm interested in buying my "first" gun. I already own one; my grandfather gave me a .22 rifle when I was 14. This would be the first gun that I've actually purchased. I've been looking a little bit at lever action rifles, mostly for the aesthetic. I'm more interested in target shooting or hunting, rather than self-defense. What would /k/ recommend for me to check out? Preferably something inexpensive.
