Why are shotgun handguns not popular?

9b09d7 No.522561

>>522558

Harsh recoil and the similarity to sawed-off shotguns used by criminals, who are bad people.

In the US, they're specifically disallowed due to requiring smoothbore barrels and/or gauges larger in size than .50" in diameter(that's about 12.7mm) and either would label it as a destructive device. We can have .410 bore handguns with rifled barrels, though.

This went unanswered because it was right about the time everything went to hell when I asked it: I don't have much in the way of equipment or tools, but really like side charging…

Having bought the Lantac "advanced upper receiver" and an on-sale side-charging carrier from BCA, it turns out these companies' understanding of "side charging AR-15" differs. The carrier can't go all the way back – so the bolt catch catches, but on the carrier, not the bolt face. So the side charging handle (a grade-2 10/32 screw at that juncture) is getting hammered all out of shape, and I'm getting feed issues.

So either I need to grind about a 1/4" tall by 1/3" deep into the upper (the Lantec is extra-thick 7075) or re-drill the carrier forward of it's current screw-hole and move my handle forward

Also this arrangement seems to need side charging because I can't use the standard handle unless I use both hands and brace the stock against my belly, like it was a 150lbs cross bow instead of a normal carbine spring. I've tried changing the cam pin (lantac talks up their special CP-r360 pin that comes with the extra thick upper) but haven't had a chance to fire it yet. But I think cycling snapcaps through is less painful. Not "easy" like on my buddy's AR, but shouldn't require mortaring between every misfire.

Experiences with Lantac? Thoughts on drilling the carrier?

Hardware store gas masks are superior in most ways - better seal, comfort, price, protection (with the right filters) is the same. Modern military masks are patterned after them, with a few differences. For example a military gas mask might be made so it can give a better cheek weld on a rifle, or so it won't interfere with helmets, made more proof to elements/fire/water, or just ruggedized. Look up M50 JSGPM and compare it with any commercial grade paint mask, it's clearly based on the commercial available masks just with the changes mentioned above.

I know 3M 6009 cartridges will stop chlorine gas, and I know of class IV labs that use $150 3M masks. It blocks radioactive isotopes too, and you can stack their filters (they snap on) to produce multi layered protection. So as long as you don't need your mask to withstand a kick to the face, or fit under a helmet, you can mosey on down to Home Hardware and pick a high quality paint mask. Or aliexpress since they have a better selection, link and pic related:

Flintlocks. Don't even own one and couldn't find info elsewhere. So:

Do you have to put the cartridge paper in after the bullet, and if so why?

I've seen a flintlock at a "half-cock" position and a "full-cock" position. Is there a real difference, and if so, what is it? Is it better to fire with the former or latter, and if so, why? If not, why?

c9e195 No.522705

Been considering selling my SLR-107FR for quite some time now, anyone know how much they're actually worth now? Picked mine up for $800 a few years ago. I've seen them on Gunbroker for $1700 sometimes, just seems unreasonable.

Love it and all but just want to either get into the AR game or just buy an AUG, since that's my dream gun. Thanks.

a72a71 No.522707

>>522703

*To specify, this is the wikipedia page (since the flintlock page doesn't mention this):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-cock

>Many firearms, particularly older firearms, had a notch cut into the hammer allowing half-cock, as this position would neither allow the gun to fire nor permit the hammer-mounted firing pin to rest on a live percussion cap or cartridge. The purpose of the half-cock position has variously been used either for loading a firearm, as a safety mechanism, or for both reasons. The still commonly used English expression of "going off half-cocked" derives from the failure of the half-cock mechanism to keep the hammer from falling and the subsequent failure to prevent a firearm from firing when unintended.

So why was it still used on flintlocks? And I meant to mention that I've seen someone fire a flintlock from the half-cock position, or what I assume to be (because on other flintlocks the full-cock, or what I assume to be, is blatantly further back).

Define assault rifle. Also defined "saw use" (does an Allied soldier taking a dead German's STG count?). You also have to define "prior to Vietnam" (US entry or absolute start of hostilities?).

World War 2 is a possible candidate if you count the M2 Carbine. If you deem 30 Carbine insufficiently intermediate, the only possible thing before the absolute start of the Vietnam war (1955) is Soviet (Type 56 didn't exist yet) military action against countries they armed.

A friend of mine gave me a Savage Axis .270 winchester. Although I know of the round, I've never fired it before, nor do I know anyone around me who has a .270. What are your experiences with 270? Should I take it hunting? How does it compare with 308 and 30-30?

06b269 No.524042

The .270 Winchester became a very popular cartridge due to the widespread praises of gunwriter Jack O'Connor who used the cartridge for 40 years and touted its merits in the pages of Outdoor Life.[4][5] It drives an 8.4 grams (130 gr) bullet at approximately 960 m/s (3,140 ft/s), later reduced to 930 m/s (3,060 ft/s). The cartridge demonstrated high performance at the time of its introduction and was marketed as being suitable for big game shooting in the 370 to 910 metres (400 to 1,000 yd) range. Two additional bullet weights were soon introduced: a 6.5 grams (100 gr) hollow-point bullet for varmint shooting, and a 9.7 grams (150 gr) bullet for larger deer, elk, and moose in big-game hunting.[3]

Loads are commonly available from 6.5 to 10.4 grams (100 to 160 gr) sizes with 8.4-and-9.7-gram (130 and 150 gr) loads being by far the most popular. Handloaders have a larger range of options with the availability of bullets in a number of weights from 5.8 to 11.7 grams (90 to 180 gr). Common bullet weight recommendations for shooting different game are as follows:

5.8–7.1 grams (90–110 gr) bullets: animals smaller than coyote.

8.4 grams (130 gr) bullets: antelope or other animals up to the size of mule deer.

9.1–10.4 grams (140–160 gr) bullets: deer, elk, moose, and some larger animals.[1]

The Nagant used brass cartridges to perfect its own and steel doesn't do a goo job of it, so you would still get some leakage.

Now if you had rubber around the forcing cone and pushed the mouth of the cylinder over it, then you might get some sort of gas seal. But then, I'm not good with engineering and it's still early in the morning for me.

So , this is just a variation of the recommendation question but what are somethings to look out when buying a bolt action rifle ? Asking this because bolsocuck is probably going to win and he might legalize guns to a point where a .223 is available, I know to check for cracks and thing like that in the stock and receiver (is it another word ?) but anything else is helpful

4fad74 No.524305

>>524257

Doable, but you'd have to have very precise machining on the cylinder, extension, and bore itself, plus oversized balls. I'm sure this has been tested somewhere that I haven't seen, but I'm sure BP in a suppressor is a recipe for a bad time after a cylinder or two.

>>524300

Check for not only cracks but also stress marks on all the metal. Also look for parts that show uneven wear. Take a set of calipers to check the bore diameter. If you can't get those a field expedient bore gauge is a loaded cartridge of that caliber. Put the bullet end in the end of the bore but don't force it. If the bullet goes in entirely or even past the cartridge neck the bore is seriously fucked. Headspace is a little harder to check unless it's a break action. In that case hold the closed action up to a light source, if you can see anything between the breechface and the end of the chamber run the fuck away.

This question actually inspires me.

What I'd like is a dragunov (who wouldn't?) but perhaps the the closest thing is to build an AK in, maybe 6.5 grendel, with a 24" barrel, and add a PSL style thumbhole stock.

Where even can I get an AK pattern barrel in 6.5 grendel? What should I plan on doing different if I want PSL furniture

http://www.troupsystems.com/romanian%20stocks.htm

on an AK47-80% build?

Or come to that, has anybody managed to fit 7.62x54r rounds/magazines into an AK47 lower? Cutting some extra metal wouldn't be hard … so long as there's room for the rest of the parts to be welded in place afterwords.

The only problem with 6.5 in an AK is the magazines given 6.5 is longer than both 5.45 and 7.62 by a tad bit. For barrels you just find a reliable barrel maker and tell him what you want. But in all honesty if you aren't looking for the trouble of finding everything do as >>525159 said.

There are AK patterns in 8mm mauser.

There are AK patterns in 12 gauge…

Anything is possible, it's just more work. We'd have to expand magazine well, action, barrel (for headspace) and work the gas system as well. A change to .223 would be a lot easier as only the barrel and gas system would require serious changes.

Also I think .223 AK patterns are offered on market in America, aren't they? Not available up here but I know I read something about it.

1777a9 No.525175

6.5 Grendel's parent case is .220 Russian which parent case is a 7.62x39. All you need to make it work in an AK is just a barrel swap and ammo that isn't longer than 5.45x39. A straight up barrel change like that works with vz58's as well.

>>525172

He was talking straight up throwing an AK together with 7.62 parts with a 6.5gren barrel which does work, it also works with vz.58's as well. The only problem is you may have to load your own rounds due to 6.5 gren having an overall length slightly above 7.62/5.45.

Although, if I wanted to build it in -x54r, I'd need different magazines altogether, meaning cutting open more of the receiver blank, right?

Unless the 1mm (or 1.5mm…) blank could withstand being adapted to accept an AR15 style mag-catch.

>>525179

I think you guys get the gist of it. I want to build an AK, and I'd like it to look like a dragunov, so long barrel, different furniture. If I'm building what looks like a sniper rifle, I'd like it to be in a round that can go the distance … thus 6.5 or -x54r.

I'm already planning on building an AR15 in 6.5 grendel, so will have handloading supplies. I'll just have to mark them "hot" or "AK"

Suppose you had a gun chambered in .460 S&W Magnum. Due to the rimmed, straightwall cartridge and consistent bore diameter, it could also chamber .454 Casull, .45 Colt, .45 Schofield, .45 Auto Rim, and maybe even a .410 shotshell.

This has two complications. One, the twist rate for the intended Super Magnum cartridge may not be optimal for the lesser cartridges. Second, the lesser cartridges would have to go through about an inch of freebored chamber before hitting the rifling.

Would this have an effect on practical accuracy, and if so, how much?

>Are the Czech or Yugo mausers good?

They're both pretty good. In fact outside of Chinese and some pre-98 patterns I can't think of any military mauser that isn't a fine rifle.

>Where do I get a decent mauser from

That's a little tougher, it's something that you really want to inspect before you buy. Classic Firearms sometimes runs deals and I think they're still good to deal with, if a little overpriced most of the time. Trawl your local shops/ gun shows, no telling what you might find.

>Is ammo still decent to find for it?

8x57 isn't hard to find, it's just solidly in the realm of 'Not sold at walmart'. Good brass is 60-75 cents a round, where you can get steel case for 40-50 cents a round. Any surplus still available is most likely going to be overpriced or just not something you want to touch with a ten foot pole.

>How much does the rifle and ammo cost on average?

Depends on what you're looking for. Yugo and Czech mausers are rising in price, but you can still find deals. If you're going to modify it anyway, or if you're willing to deal with sourcing original parts look for a sporterized gun. I know I picked up a k98 recently that was drilled and tapped and put in a sporter stock but otherwise unmolested for cheap, just have to be patient to find the parts and return it to military configuration.

Nah. Worst case scenario is the receiver stretches, and that happens to all Mausers with use, especially if they've been rebarreled.

Yugos are a bit softer and have a reputation in the sporterizing world for that, too.

The "safety lug" from the large ring action is just an easier way to tell that it's going out of spec when it starts showing wear in the rear.

fd6417 No.526381

can somebody explain to me the aspects of newer guns of the same caliber having better control and/or better accuracy then they're older counterparts?

Like if you strapped on a heavy ass barrel to a luger wouldn't it be arguably easier to control constant fire then a small concealable s&w shield?

It's harder to make the comparison to rifles because of larger differences in calibers but the point still stands especially for anything that uses pistol cartridges.

Like I would assume a UMP45 is better in almost every aspect than a Thompson, like cost/maintenance/accuracy/control. but why? If the inner mechanisms are roughly the same and the biggest difference to guns nowadays is weight.

Why do people say shooting a G3 full auto is like snorting hot sauce, but a scar-h (waay lighter gun) is much easier to control?

That's a big bunch of questions, Anon.

TL;DR - Newer is better through scientific study and improvement.

Newer firearms use newer techniques for materials, allowing for better barrels and, by extension, superior ballistic capabilities. This combined with years spent developing a certain firearm leads to a decent final product.

>Like if you strapped on a heavy ass barrel to a luger wouldn't it be arguably easier to control constant fire then a small concealable s&w shield?

Too many variables involved for a guaranteed answer.

>Like I would assume a UMP45 is better in almost every aspect than a Thompson, like cost/maintenance/accuracy/control. but why?

Stock design(ergonomics), rate of fire, modern muzzle attachments.

>Why do people say shooting a G3 full auto is like snorting hot sauce, but a scar-h (waay lighter gun) is much easier to control?

The G3 is a late 1940s early 1950s design using a roller-delayed blowback action - the bolt is unlocked through pressure pushing rearwards as the bullet leaves the barrel, delayed only by the friction of its rolling lugs.

The SCAR-H, being gas operated, uses a rotating bolt design "borrowed" from the AR-18 - excess gas pressure is used to unlock the bolt resulting in much lighter recoil.

>>526381

>Like I would assume a UMP45 is better in almost every aspect than a Thompson, like cost/maintenance/accuracy/control. but why?

Different materials (wood can swell and so on), manufacturing techniques (stamping vs milling for a big change, other changes over time like quality of raw materials) and the ability to manufacture to much tighter tolerances for a given cost (tighter tolerances usually means greater accuracy). Also experience of previous fuck ups (even if the broad mechanism is the same you'll gain experience of little tricks or unnecessary parts of the original design that might increase potential points of failure). The UMP45 and Thompson are very different guns, you'd be much better comparing the early Thompsons to the later ones. Alternatively compare the AKM to the original AK47.

> If the inner mechanisms are roughly the same and the biggest difference to guns nowadays is weight.

Greater weight might actually make a gun easier to control and so newer, lighter, designs have a bit of a trade-off there.

The 2nd gen PSAKs are solid according to everything I've read and watched in addition to my personal experience. I have a prebuilt but the kits with forged parts seem equally decent although they had issues with shipping cast parts with kits that were supposed to have forged bits. That only reared its head when they first launched the kits so I chalk it up to inventory issues as they had parts for 2 SKUs before they officially launched the cheaper forged Freedom kit. They're on sale for ~$500 so as long as they haven't introduced cost-cutting measures into the design over the past 2-3 months, I'd say we actually have a decent, competitively priced, American-made AK on the market for the first time ever. Feel free to disagree though.

>>523824

I can understand why so many people are perplexed by America's inability to produce a decent AK but it makes sense if you consider how the design is supposed to be manufactured. Designs which make heavy use of stamped components are awesome for purposes of mass production but companies building AKs for the US consumer market aren't going to be able to gear up to produce rifles in lots of 10,000+ at a time. Stamped receivers with welded or riveted construction introduce a lot of sources for error into the assembly process. Producing in tolerance receivers from sheet steel requires expensive tooling and properly joining the trunnions to that thin receiver shell requires precise, expensive fixturing to ensure consistency. Just look at the videos of the Io factory for examples of what happens when operators have significant control over the workpiece in the riveting process. There is no excuse for some of the poor material choices and terrible QA seen in certain American made AKs but a lot of that is driven by the fact that an AK is a labor intensive gun to manufacture without all the tooling and automation available to companies cranking them out in huge lots. An AK has to be "cheap" to meet market demands as Combloc factories can crank out decent rifles using the same process and equipment they've had in place for over 50 years.

I would like to learn how to prep acorns for human consumption, and I know they have tannic acid in them which is bad. Is boiling them all you need to do?

Update: I found a few good looking acorns, cracked the shells, then popped them in boiling water. I could see the water turning a reddish hue. They were in there for approximately 20 minutes before I removed them and attempted to consume. They were still very bitter and I had to spit them out. I know there is a trick to this, but perhaps I didn't leave them on the stove long enough. Or perhaps this is a multi part process having to dump water putting fresh water in and dumping until boiling water is clear. If anyone knows the trick I would like to know.

Would this set up be in line with the recoil and work just fine? I mean, I see no reason why it wouldn't work as intended, but guns are surprisingly arcane devices.

40dd08 No.526849

>>526837

No, it's not in line. The black material is not perfectly 100% hard, it's going to flex down minutely, which translates to even more thrust the other way. It happens even if you attach it directly back, it's just that the flexing is linear and less perceptible. Under the forces of firing a gun a lot of parts which seem solid actually flex, this is why recoil causes vibration in the gun almost no matter what you do, and how the myth of barrel harmonics came about.

I think the AR does a good job of keeping recoil in a straight line the composite furniture limits the refraction of recoil shockwave elsewhere, which is another source of instability

To see the opposite technique look at the Kriss Super V, which actually bends the recoil shockwave so it travels downward and not into the shoulder.

Or the Russian counterbalance system which literally reflects the shockwave back.

Started using it and both my semiauto Sig pistols were malfunctioning up the wazoo, stovepiping and failing to feed. Never had a single malfunction in 2 years until then. Do you think the ammo could be the problem? Anyone experience this before?

However…I keep my magazines full when not in use, for readiness. Could it be that the magazine springs are the problem? Anything wrong with keeping them full all the time?

Thank you senpais.

I'd say it's the ammo, but you need to do your due diligence. Buy some cheap federal or fiocchi brass from walmart or some cheap PPU or S&B if you have a local shop that carries it and try with that. What ammo do you usually run in your Sigs?

829f6c No.526934

>>526928

No personal experience with this, but let's logically create some steps to take.

1: go to a store and buy a box of new, hot, fresh ammo. Doesn't need to be boatlod; 1 box will tell you. Take that to the range, a magazine's worth in both firearms. No stovepipes? Ammo.

I've had trouble with my AR magazines not feeding well. But they're brand new. It seems it only feeds properly if they're loaded with the headstamp firmly against the back of the magazine. Otherwise the bolt will go right over the top of it, not grab anything, and because the rim is sorta stuck on the feed-lips will make extracting and resolving the misfeed a complete PAIN in the pants to fix. Bleh.

If it's the magazine springs, you'll see it by hand-cycling. Do you have a magazine worth of snapcaps? Load them all, hand crank the slide. If it hangs doing that, then yes your springs are now in question.

Good luck!

My everyday glasses don't really stick close to my face like a wraparound would, so when trying to aim through an optic or my sights, my pupils are looking over my glasses since my head is tilted forward. I know getting proper Rx lenses on safety glasses will provide a superior field of vision compared to the inserts, but is the field of vision on inserts generally acceptable? If so, is there a preferred brand like Wiley X or Smith optics?

I figure the inserts would be more versatile, since the option to swap out lens tints is available. They look pretty goofy, but I'm not aiming for aesthetics on range day; I just to be able to look through my sights with my prescription in between my eye and the sight.

Public military exists solely to serve private interests, and private military is an unofficial branch of the public military with less oversight. A genuine private military (that's not tied to the state at all) would be shut down immediately, or heavily infiltrated and left as a honeypot. Militias are a classic example of this, and (to a lesser extent) so are cults, communes, etc. You are not allowed to exist independently of the state. If they can't make you helpless and dependant on them, they will destroy you.

These are just lower receivers. Apparently with screw-on barrels that then need to be indexed so the gas hole is on the top.

But my problem is with the first one. Why have a bullpup if the boolit is getting shoved so far forward. It's just shooting 9mm at most, with that tiny magazine. Like, seriously the action is about 10x the length of the unfired cartridge.

Also the second one has, for all the world and its appearances, two safeties. One for fire/safe, another for auto/burst/single. Seriously? Two points of failure?

What do you think of Bowe Bergdahl?

920548 No.528659

I sadly don't have any firearms at the moment, but I was raised in a gun loving family.

When I was a teen(about 13-16-ish) I suffered from suicidal thoughts, and because I lived in California at the time, I was forcefully admitted to mental health institutes 3 times. Around the time when I was 17, I was deemed mentally sound and I was taken off of medication and therapy.

I'm now 19 moving in to my Nevada home tomorrow, and I'd like some sort of home protection.

I was wondering if my past mental health issues would hinder my ability to purchase a gun.

Sorry for the wall of text, and thank you for your time.

This will be an issue, yes, as that's one of the qualifiers to failing a background check. You may want to check with the local police to confirm if it's still on record due to you being declared mentally sound, though.

Not until you actually get denied on the NICS check. Then you get the transaction number and a little form (or a link to the website I guess is more likely now) and get to deal with the ATF then.

074238 No.528712

On the one hand, your court records (if any) and mental health records are almost certainly sealed, as you were a minor when you were admitted.

On the other, form 4473 states, "Have you ever been adjudicated mentally defective (which includes having been adjudicated incompetent to manage your own affairs) or have you ever been committed to a mental institution?"

Note that there is no age limit specified and it is a felony to make false statements on a 4473.

This is a job for an attorney.

I would also point out that black powder and pre-1899 guns are not "firearms" under Federal law and are quite suitable for home defense.

Please consult with qualified legal council before you go any further.

I vaguely recall a Russian machine gun optic which was a red dot with a magnified window up the top. Not a red dot mounted on a scope, this was a single 'tube' that was 1x, with a 6x 'horse shoe' at the top. The 'horse shoe' had crosshairs. Allegedly, the design was created for urban warfare after the shit with the chechens.

The company's website had gone down and had to be accessed through the wayback machine. It was also only in Russian moonrunes, I had to read it through a translator, so I've got Buckley's of finding it through searching.

With felonies(as well as the NFA[unless cartridges are not in production]) in mind, all cartridge guns are considered firearms. Muzzleloaders are fine.

Spring changes, or possible changing the lever or rollers themselves. Neither of which are really in the ballpark of user-friendliness as something like a 3 position gas port.

>What's the best type of detachable magazine for shotgun that can be found in the US?

Are you asking about conversion kits or shotguns that take detachable mags already? I think the Saiga still has the widest range, since the DDI shotguns, the Cheetahs, and the Cantamounts take Saiga pattern mags. The VEPR style might be better from a strict usability perspective though, since it's a push in pull out like an AR instead of a rock in like an AK.

NFA is a federal thing, and they don't really give a shit about self-defense.

On the bright side, depending on your state, you might not give a shit because you'll get life in prison for murdering some innocent wealth redistributor.

Holsters provide three things:

1: They hold the gun in place.

I've heard that mares in estrus/heat apparently force themselves on humans they trust. how much of this is make-believe by mlp and how much is real? The same people then claimed that said mares are thankful for orgasms human males can lead them to, since stallions generally don't last long enough to get them there.

Can someone verify this? It seems like excuses from the zoophilic crowd, but then again, i have no clue about horses and it certainly doesn't seem like a human male could damage a mare with his dick.

I'm assuming, given the late hour, you were a little bit tipsy when you posted this. But I think it deserves a more thorough answer than hatred and revulsion offered you so far.

As a horse owner, I currently have a mini mare with some sort of reproductive problem. So, she's in heat for weeks at a time, peeing at the gelding (horse-word for eunich. He's been cut) that can't do squat for her.

All she does, is walk backwards into the gelding, and squirts heat-scented urine at him. Now, horses are very muscular creatures, so I don't doubt if an owner were to "ask" her if she was interested in that way, she's overreact and maybe crush the owner into the wall. But that's not, as your post asks, rape. That's a tsundere anime chick shouting "what!?! What took you so long to ask!! Of COURSE I want the D!!!! Drop your pants and give it to me before I sit on you, you useless faggot!"

Totally off the specifics of your questions, dolphin pods have been recorded to have raped their females. Takes about four or five males to hold the female down, though. She only agrees to it if it's a question between getting humped by some know-nothing cunt and drowning, though.

Anyone have a good source for gel tests of 9mm loads from carbines? Specifically I'm interested in the PPU 147gr JHP since it has a very tempting price, but I know it doesn't reliably expand out of a handgun. I'm curious if that changes out of a 10-16" BBL or not. CZ-52 is a prototype forced into production with spotty quality - the slide is a massive weakpoint despite the strength of the locking mechanism due the lack of material and, to a much smaller degree, pants-on-head heat treating consistency. The receiver itself is indestructible though.

The TT-33 is crap for other reasons, usually failingRead: Cracking and breaking off forward of the ejection port regardless of manufacture. There is no manual safety, and tacked-on safeties are generally considered shit.

For either it's a good idea to avoid surplus ammunition - Polish x25 cracks at the neck, Romanian shit has very hard primers, Yugoslav is said to be loaded hot.

New production is crap but it's better than throwing a baseball and probably won't wreck your gun.

2-7 million crimes are stopped a year by guns in the US

30,000 people die from guns a year in the US.

outright banning guns would kill more people than it saves.

Second, 30,000 people is a bullshit number. First, 10,000 of that is suicide, second 50% of what's left is GANG violence! You're talking trading 250,000 lives saved by guns for a wimpy 10,000 innocents.

>l cost in dollars of setting up a motherbase tier PMC

Several hundred k a day for a small base. It's cheaper to have it docked 24/7, and just sail it when you have a paying job that pays way more than several hundred k a day. This was back when I calculated it a few years ago.

DWT is dry weight, meaning the weight of the actual steel the boat is made of.

Doesn't include fuel, cargo, equipment, perishables, or even crew for smaller boats. Weight of all this added up can be significant compared to DWT.

First: I'm a PSA guy. All my AR-15 stuff is from PSA, so I'm used to their prices. I just ordered a CHF chrome-lined 4150 upper assembly for $399 for my ar-15.

I just got rid of my c308, which was garbage, and I'm left with a bunch of .308 ammo (prepper). I know I can't unload this stuff for the same value as I bought it, so I'm going to get an AR-10. After reading up on the benefits of cold hammer forged, chrome-lined barrels, I figured that I would go that route with the AR-10 as well. I can only find individual CHF barrels, not a fully assembled upper, and the barrels alone are nearly $400. I don't have the time or energy to build piecemeal a rifle, which is why I'm fixed on complete uppers and lowers. Does anyone know of CHF uppers?

Also, it seems that AR-10's are inherently more expensive than AR-15's. Excluding PSA, the cheapest whole gun I can find is the DPMS Oracle at $800, and individual upper and lower assemblies are insanely expensive. I just checked out all the companies in the FAQ and uppers alone are consistently over $1,000. Is PSA my only hope for a $600 ar-10?

Most important value is delta v, so probably a smallish ship by scifi standards. Second most important value is heat dissipation, so lasers would be rare. Third most important is useful mass, which restricts use of railguns.

In low orbit space it would be 1 man ship, shaped like a MIRV, single autocannon, DIRCM laser, couple of MKV like missiles.

Higher orbitals it would be the size of Almaz or Polyus, crew off two or three, wider range of armament including nuke mines/bombs.

Farther out it would be ten times the size with most of the increase being fuel. Missiles in deep space are slow accelerating plasma thrusters, bombs are common since theyre impossible to detect, chemical powered cannons for close defense, wide range of ECM/DIRCM.

The issue, (and this is far from limited to the US) is that like many other fields gunsmithing is no longer a profession, but simply a vehicle to make money. No one cares about solid work and a good reputation when they just think of making x-amount of money to make it big/retire, or move on to the next field.

It also doesn't help that it seems every motherfucker that manages to assemble a lego kit for men AR decides he's now qualified to work on anything under the sun.

This isn't a joke by the way, it's a project by NPO Molniya.

At the time American B-52s could standoff a thousand miles from Russian border and still fire cruise missiles to hit major cities, while an average Russian interceptor had a much shorter combat range. So it needed refueling support and a LOT of forewarning so refueling aircraft could get into air.

Problem Russia faced in 90s is that all their early warning satellites were scrapped in the confusion of USSR collapse, and they had no idea when American bombers would be taking off. As a result they couldn't send fighters and refueling tankers ahead of time to stop the bombers.

One solution they tried was a form of airborne patrol carrier which would always fly patrol over arctic. It contained two Su-27s modified to carry missiles and attach to the An-225 aircraft which is modified to capture the Su-27s with drogue lines and berth them until combat. This was killed in its infancy when it was suggested that American submarines would mount SM-3 missiles, and shoot them down.

To solve this issue Russia modernized the concept of BOR (image included), replaced the liquid rocket with solid fuel rocket, and replaced the small BOR craft with a full sized interceptor. The carried interceptor modified Su-27 or MiG-25, or purpose built interceptor 12m long and 15 tons weight with a load of missiles extended its range to 2000km and could be shooting down enemy bombers only 15 minutes from launch. It would detach at extremely high altitudes and glide onto an enemy bomber formation, shit out its missile load, then use its full fuel supply to get home.

The parts that could be fitted together to make this system are all off the shelf and in service, but S-500 makes it obsolete because it has a SAM that uses a jet engine (ground-to-air cruise missile) for thousands of kilometers range.

Dunno, when was that? I'd assume it's people complaining about using the G3 before the G36 being fully implemented, since it's heavier and people QQ about it.

Besides that, the service pistol might have been meant as well. IIRC there was a change in the model at some time.

AFAIK the guns used by the soldiers in training or in regular duty are less well maintained/modern than the shit actual troops in the field use. For obvious reasons.

I'm trying to choose a scope for my 12.5 ar (supressed, if that makes a difference), and I'm getting very frustrated on "ranging indicators" (like the one on acog and such).

It says "ranged for ar boolets", but there is no other indications of bullet speed, ballistic coef or anything.

I did the math and past 200 yards the difference between a 45gr out of a 20" on a hot day and 55gr out of an 8" in winter is enough to screw up the aiming by more than the bullet drop between 300 and 400 yards.

Is there anything I'm missing, or are the markings simply useless if I'm not using the exact same bullet out of the exact same gun in laboratory conditions of pressure wind and temperature?

Any suggestion on a good <600$ "fighting" scope?

I was given a .22 from a guy who got it from someone he knew and he says that they didn't do a proper firearm exchange. Now that it's in my hands I intended to sell it to a friend, but I want to break the cycle and go through the proper method in order to transfer it in his name. Is it possible for me to get in trouble for making a "straw purchase" he just handed me a perfectly functional .22 that came with a carrying case and a BIG K-bar for free because he didn't know how to feed rounds into the mag and thought it was broken since it's not registered in my name, if so should I try to retrace the original owner or just say fuck it and hope that my friend doesn't sell it to some spree shooter, or hope it doesn't get stolen, lost, etc.? Legal advice I guess is what I need.
