Let's see: Grandpa didn't talk much about the war. The combat at least. Was drafted late, tried to keep his ass out of combat because he knew the war was lost anyway. Joined a paratrooper division and ended up in the Netherlands in 1944, said it was the worst winter he ever experienced. Was very impressed by mobile V2 launches he saw in the distance, saw deployment of a weapon system that looked like the Ba 349 Natter and told of rumors about superweapons that swirling around then.

Got captured by the Americans. POW camp was horrible, just a giant fenced in area without shelter.

Strangely the Americans were actively trying to recruit Germans to fight the Japanese. A few did take the offer and were sent to the US for training but the war ended before their deployment but most settled in the US and took citizenship.

Managed to flee from the POW camp later and settled with fake discharge documents in the Soviet sector.
