One thing that isn't clear to me is the nature of the believer's paradise in Islam. Many sources I've seen promise material pleasures like fine wine, virgins and large feasts.

Why would life in heaven be anything like it is on earth? Sexual pleasure seemed particularly suspect to me. As far as I know new souls are created on earth, so there is no procreation in heaven and thus no need for the sex instinct.

The whole idea seems to clash hard with Islam's acetic principles and with much of doctrine which characterizes carnal desires as inherently sinful and symptomatic of earthly existence. Would it not be more sensible for those desires to be simply removed upon entry, like mental and physical illness?

Perhaps this will be more clear with further study on my part. Where should I go to learn more about the afterlife?

Paradise isn't the same for everyone. If sex brings you no joy, then it will not be offered to you in Paradise. It's a complete non-issue. You have to stop thinking of Paradise as a physical place with physical rules.

It's not that I don't derive joy from sex. It just seems odd to me that something so firmly rooted in the material, biological world would have a presence in Paradise at all. It's the same way with wealth. You have no physical needs to attend to, so control and use of resources is irrelevant.

I know that drug use is considered a sin in Islam. Let's say that a pharmaceutical pill addict addict realizes his problem, accepts Islam and makes a vow to abstain from those pills for the rest of his life. Let's also assume he is eventually able to kick his addiction for good.

If he makes it into Paradise, would he have access to his pills as a 'reward' for his previous good behavior? It seems far more likely that he would never have any need or desire for the stuff again.

There is evidence that sex and food can both be addictive, and many people hoard wealth obsessively. The way it's described, Paradise seems like a place for people to freely indulge their addictions, rather than offering any kind of liberation from said desires.

They come straight from the Quran. Al-waquiah promises 'Virgins, tender and unaging". Ali Imran promises 'purified spouses' and, multiple times, gardens 'beneath which rivers flow' and 'as wide as the heavens'. In addition, Muslims are promised an amount of material wealth ten times as much as they had on earth, or greater multiples for those who suffered or became matyrs for the sake of Islam.

And you interpret that to be about sex and drugs?

I'm not sure how you could interpret promises of free virgins as anything but sexual.

We need to remember that:

1. A soul can have whatever it wants in Paradise, 36:57 "لَهُمْ فِيهَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَلَهُم مَّا يَدَّعُون", in the interpretation of the meaning: "For them there are fruits, and for them there is whatever they ask for. "

2. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ‎ will never be annoyed with Paradise's Dwellers, Sahih Muslim Book 53 Hadiths 9 and 10.

Ultimately, it's completely fine because there is no sin. Sin can't exist in Paradise because Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ does not like sin and is not annoyed by Paradise's Dwellers.

>Sin can't exist in paradise

Wouldn't this imply that sexual activity and alcohol don't exist in paradise, or are those things not inherently sinful in the way that other drugs like heroin and cocaine are? It just seems strange to think of Muslim ascetics guzzling wine and having orgies after years of abstinence and sobriety in life.

How did you come to conclusion that sex is inherently sinful in Islam? I think you don't know what does the word inherently mean or you are heavily misinformed.

yes exactly, these aren't going to be random women in paradise, these aren't going to be men, or children, or animals, these will be your wives.

I thought all vices were considered sinful. If not, what's the point of 'purifying' yourself by abstaining from them during Ramadan and other fasting periods? If these behaviors are 'impure' enough to require abstinence from, I'd think they'd be too impure to have a place in paradise.

If sex was inherently sinful God would have prohibited it completely. Following your logic about fasting, eating food and drinking water would be inherently sinful as well which is not the case.

In Sahih Bukhari Book 59, Hadith 3244: "Allah's Apostle said, "Allah said, "I have prepared for My Pious slaves things which have never been seen by an eye, or heard by an ear, or imagined by a human being."

And about the Hour in Sahih Bukhari Book 59, Hadith 64: "…the marrow of the bones of their legs will be seen through the bones and the flesh."

So clearly, Jannah is completely different from what we know, and the descriptions that we are given are just descriptions to excite us, what actually awaits us is much grander and different.

I'd imagine most men now in Dunya would be creeped out by transparent women.
