IslamQA is a reputable Islamic source according to many. When it came to the transgender issue, I always thought transitioning was not allowed no matter what, especially since I hear people make fun of Iran and shias for allowing sex change, but I came across this on their site, essentially that if you feel like a woman and a specialist also approves, then you can go ahead with the surgery:

>Thirdly: if your masculinity is not established, and you only think that you are a man because of what you see in your body of outward masculine appearance, in contrast to what you feel in yourself of having feminine characteristics and an inclination towards males and being sexually attracted to them, then you should examine your situation and not go ahead with the surgery that you have mentioned. You should consult experienced specialist doctors. If they determine that you are male in outward appearance but are in fact female, then you may submit yourself to their treatment, so that they can bring out your femininity by doing surgery. But that will not in fact be a sex change from male to female, because this will not be up to them; rather it will be bringing out your true nature and removing what is in your body, and what you feel deep inside you of confusion and ambiguity. But if nothing is clear to the experts, then do not take the risk of undergoing this surgery; be content with the decree of Allah and be patient with what has befallen you, seeking to please your Lord and protecting yourself against the possible consequences of doing an operation without guidance and insight concerning your condition. Turn to Allah and beseech Him to relieve you of what you are facing, and to heal you from your psychological problems, for control of all things is in His hand, may He be glorified, and He is able to do all things. End quote.

What did they mean by this, and so whats the orthodox ruling on this?

Well, you were wrong. Happens to everyone from time to time.

With all the different neurological differences and mental disabilities that exist in this world. It wouldn't be surprising to acknowledge it is possible for a female brain/soul to exist in a male body and vice-versa.

The question is to ask whether it is better to change the mind to conform to the body of change the body to conform to the mind. Currently it is impossible to change the way the mind works. If it were possible, then it would be no different from brainwashing imho, which raises serious questions for both technical and ethical perspectives.

Changing the body won't really change it's nature (sex chromosomes cannot be changed) but it can at least bring some peace to the mind of the ones that were born in the wrong body.

Seems like it's happening here too as evidenced by the absolute state of the posters in this thread

That doesn't sound like what it says in scripture. Did you even look at OP's link?

>Firstly: It is not possible for anyone, no matter who he is, to change the creation of Allah, may He be exalted, from male to female or vice versa. Whoever Allah, may He be exalted, has created as a male can never become a female who menstruates and gives birth!

>Yes, the doctors may tamper with him to satisfy his perversion so that he will think that he has become a woman, but he will never be truly female and will live in a state of anxiety and worry, which may lead him to commit suicide.

>Secondly: What a person may feel in his mind and heart, that he is of a gender other than what he appears to be to us does not give him an excuse to change his gender; rather it comes under the heading of following the Shaytaan in changing the creation of Allah – outwardly but not truly – and those feelings do not make it permissible for him to undergo surgery or take medicines and hormones to change his outward appearance. Rather he must be content with the decree of Allah, may He be exalted, and treat his case on the basis of faith and obedience to Allah. It is not permissible for him to make himself appear outwardly to be of a gender other than his real gender with which Allah created him, otherwise he will be committing a major sin; if this person is really female then she will be masculinised and if he is really male then he will be effeminate.

It's straight from the first two paragraphs. They make it perfectly clear that attempting to change one's sex through surgery is forbidden. If you call yourself 'transgender', you are not submitting to god.

>If you call yourself 'transgender', you are not submitting to god.

I don't call myself "transgender." I call myself a woman, and in Iran or Egypt or Pakistan (etc. etc.) they would call me a woman. In western countries there are some who will call me "transgender" but that's not my problem.

>attempting to change one's sex through surgery is forbidden

Got a hadith for that?

Absolutely right. They completely skip the first 2 points and focus on the small part that is in agreement with their delusions.

I thought the BO said we are never talking about this topic again on this board? Are we only allowed to talk about it when it is an echo chamber of support for this mental illness?

>echo chamber of support for this mental illness

Muslims have always supported mental illness. Muslims literally built the world's first mental health clinic and it is embedded in Islam to treat the mentally ill with dignity. If you can't handle that, then you're either ignorant or you're a d&c shill and need to gtfo.

I was referring to the fact that gender dysphoria is a type of mental illness. It does not require surgical treatment. If someone thinks that their leg is a foreign object on their body and wants to have it surgically amputated, they would have a type of mental illness. This surgery would not happen, rather the person would undergo mental treatment for his mental condition.

I am not saying they shouldn't be handled with dignity, I am saying they should be treated as people with a mental illness.

As the first point in the article posted says: Yes, the doctors may tamper with him to satisfy his perversion so that he will think that he has become a woman, but he will never be truly female and will live in a state of anxiety and worry, which may lead him to commit suicide.

You people are making the claim that it is not a type of mental illness.

Some mental illnesses do require surgery. For example: a tumor in the brain causing anxiety or depression. Also, doctors will remove someone's limb to cure body dysmorphia after other avenues have been exhausted. You're acting like someone can walk into a doctor's office and say, "I'm a woman. Cut off this penis." and walk out penis free the same day. Transitioning takes YEARS of psycho-therapy and medications before surgery is considered.

>You people are making the claim that it is not a type of mental illness.

Nobody is claiming that. It is a form of mental illness. YOU, however, are not qualified to determine how it should be treated. All you have are feely-feels and trans-panic.

Hmm …

1. Get the surgery, might commit suicide.

2. Don't get the surgery, will definitely commit suicide.
