I've been trying to find some good books about the Islamic golden age which centered around Baghad between the 8th and 12th centuries. Has anyone here studied the topic? If so, could you recommend some good books on the subject?

I'm especially curious as to why the golden age ended.

The Arabian empire was ruled from Baghdad a city with 2 million people: an equivalent of 40 million in todays numbers. It was the military, cultural, intellectual and financial center of Islam and it was twice as grand as Rome ever was.

This city was slaughtered by the mongols. Utterly slaughtered to the last man, woman and child. The ancient books from Roman and Greek etc thinkers were systematically and completely destroyed. Its institutions and buildibgs utterly demolished. The mongols had to camp 20km upwind because the smell of rot reached that far.

Islam literally never recovered and every province broke off into its own country, the same countries that exist today.

With the slaughter of Baghdad though Islam didnt just lose its heart and capital. It lost a sense of divine purpose, the divine right to rule and conquer, because how could God Allah allow the destruction of such a splendid and grand city if he favoured Islam and muslims? The fall of Baghdad was a huge black pill for muslims and believe it or not we have not recovered from the mental depression of how Allah could betray his people like this.

Tldr: the mongols chopped our balls off and it demoralized us so hard we stopped trying

i recommend you learn arabic (modern standard arabic/alfusha), the best stuff is in arabic and after all these years still hasnt been translated because westerners hate how good some of our stuff is, trust me you wont regret it, we have poetry, novels, philosophy, science, histories, sociology, theology, jurisprudence (law), epics etc like i know in western culture its often downplayed but its a very vast and vibrant period of literary history

and it ended because the abbasid caliphate was invaded by the turks (which was prophesized by muhammad ﷺ), this event was one of many stages of progression towards the end times, muhammad ﷺ also said the end times will come closer once muslims conquered constantinople, curious how things turned out isnt it? https://sunnah.com/muslim:2912d https://sunnah.com/tirmidhi:2239
