I grew up in Houston, too. Sure, if you stay in the wealthier areas of the city, you're not likely to encounter this stuff, but if you grew up in South Houston like I did, the difference becomes starkly apparent. Gang violence, widespread drug use, and teen pregnancy are much more common in this part of town. Many people I knew from high school got into drugs (including myself, though inshallah I got out of it), I personally knew people who got mixed up in drug dealing, someone one of my friends knew got shot, I've known people who've struggled with addictions to things like coke and meth, etc. There was even a girl in my year who got knocked up when she was twelve, and I knew of a few more who were pregnant in high school (I myself lost my virginity at 17 in a sleezy hotel to a girl I only had a passing acquaintance with, but nothing else really came of it). I even once was personally jumped by a street gang in my neighborhood, but I was lucky to know some guys up the street who scared them off before anything bad happened. Things really aren't great here, and part of the problem is that people just don't care for each other. Most people here are self-proclaimed Christians, a religion which heavily stresses charity and brotherhood among sinners (e.g. everyone), but the fruits borne of their labor strongly suggest otherwise.

I am an American and was raised under the "muslims are evil" mindset, but after a very difficult series of years I have found the mercy and glory of Allah. I started praying and studying the Quran about 3 months ago and have been working on purging myself of sin. I am planning on going to Masjid soon, I hope they accept me despite being white and american inshallah.
